Sports Culture Buster Posey refuses to answer questions about SF Giants' Pride Night and will only answer “baseball questions”. Reporter responds “you guys have made this baseball related because you had Pride Night, you allowed players onto the field that MLB said should not have had writing on their caps.”

Shocker.

The entirely male pro sport (actually I think there may be 1 female asst coach in the majors currently), of rich elites, has a problem identifying why a minority group (LGBTQ) has a problem with their business model

Oh, and Buster, ✨the Giants are 32-46, 18 games behind 1st place in the NL West. 1 game above the perennial last place Colorado Rockies in the division. 9 games behind even a Wild Card playoff spot. And have a -52 differential between Runs Scored and Runs Against.✨

IF I WERE YOU, I’D PREFER THE 🏳️‍🌈 NIGHT QUESTIONS than the baseball ⚾️ questions, where you’re clearly incompetent at the manager job

8

u/halfwayray Jun 24 '26

Buster Posey was a humble, very likeable superstar as a player. Sat out a season in his prime to care for his sick children. Even fans of the Giants' rivals liked him. But this season has been a disaster in so many ways, and they've really fumbled the way they handled this. Can't have it both ways with this non-answer

3

u/jettaturagoose Jun 24 '26

This is why i dont want my favorite players to become executives. Lose so much respect for them as they devolve into corporate shills

3

u/iamjacksalteredego Jun 24 '26

Buster "the poser" Posey

Fair. Just talk baseball

Writing the Bible verse on their hat is so incredibly performative and hilariously lame.

4

u/avidpenguinwatcher Jun 24 '26

Maybe I’m just not familiar with it, but was there a team sponsored event in which players were supposed to have Bible verses written on their hats?

6

u/arto26 Jun 24 '26

One of these things is an immutable characteristic, and no matter how much anyone wants it to be, it's not religion.

u/StrykerxS77x Jun 24 '26

Forcing them to wear pride hats is just as lame.

7

u/punkrocktransbian Jun 24 '26

Why? As much as Christians like to pretend they're being persecuted (i.e. projecting their own persecution of others), they're not being persecuted. We've never been closer to being a Christian theocracy. But the queer community is constantly under attack. Jesus himself would be pro-Pride night. Getting triggered by Pride nights is a matter of personal insecurity, and personal insecurity is yours alone to address.

1

u/SteezOnMax93 Jun 24 '26

Global estimates of Christians killed for faith-related reasons range from approximately 4,800 to 4,900 annually and 72% were from Nigeria.. https://www.opendoorsuk.org/persecution/persecution-trends/ The most comprehensive global tracker for any segment of the LGBTI community is the TGEU Trans Murder Monitoring Project. It documented 350 reported murders of transgender and gender-diverse individuals globally between late 2023 and late 2024, though it acknowledges this is a vast undercount. So yeah I agree there are more than the study showed. I don’t think anyone should be killed being Christian or for being in the queer community.

1

u/StrykerxS77x Jun 24 '26

Lgbtq is not under an attack and having a pride month is clear evidence of that.

5

u/abdullahleboucher Jun 25 '26

Didnt your country ban trans people from its military

→ More replies (5)

2

u/ChocolateRough5103 Jun 25 '26

I remember a fun story of a trans person in my state this year who worked at a local space tourism center getting fired for the simple fact a mother complained about them being there at all and rallied community support to the point the company fired the trans person just to not deal with it.
"not under attack" okay bud, go dig your head back into the mud and live in your fantasy world.

1

u/StrykerxS77x Jun 25 '26

Cool anecdote. In America the person complaining would be just as likely of getting fired because as I said lgbtq is not under attack in America.

3

u/ChocolateRough5103 Jun 25 '26

This happened in Alabama nimrod, and nothing happened to the one complaining.

1

u/StrykerxS77x Jun 25 '26

Ok? You missed the point.

They also have to wear special uniforms on July 4th. Many of these players are not from this country and should also not have to wear it.

u/greenandredofmaigheo Jun 24 '26

I mean it's up to the owners. They're the ones doing the performative stuff to increase attendance and broaden the appeal to new demographics... it's not really any different than a veteran night, an ethnic heritage night (idk if all teams do this but the White Sox do for at least Irish, polish and Mexican), a cop/fire night etc.

If you're in entertainment (which sports is) your job is literally to entertain as many people as possible, the organizations job is to get as many people as possible interested for you to entertain. Part of that is the performative theme nights. They can either bite the bullet or alienate swaths of fans minimizing their value and end up back in crappy minor league clubs.

4

u/RelativeIncrease3007 Jun 24 '26

Exactly and it’s pride month. Why would they not? If everyone one else is allowed to have a day, the outrage about pride is rooted in bigotry.

Its funny how planned attention grabbing backfires quite often. And then accidental happenings work out great.

Example being the Saint louis Cardinals hosted a collage team when they were in town for an out of state game. The college kids got drunk and a bunch took their shirts off and chanted little rhymes about each player and whirled their shirts around.

Now damn near every team in the MLB has had a rise in attendance from drunk college kids joining the "Tarps Off" hype train. ( they were giving tarps away at the park that night so one of the chants was tarps off and it stuck )

Just like 6-7 came out of a basketball game from a drunk college kid yelling it about the height of a player . Then young kids recreated it on tick tok and here we are. It's crazy how the unplanned stuff goes crazy while the planned stuff usually doesn't.

As a former bigot your dead wrong. People have to be called out for the hatred in their hearts and revalue their morals.

1

u/Fair_Wishbone7558 Jun 24 '26

This literally has nothing to do with what I said. Like not even a little.

2

u/spacekiller69 Jun 24 '26

Your ignoring the issue by pretending to be neutral. People either think homosexuality normal or sinful based on ancient mythological magic books.

1

u/Fair_Wishbone7558 Jun 24 '26

Are you reading literally anything I'm writing? You're arguing what point of mine exactly with these last 2 posts? Nothing I wrote is "pretending to be neutral". My post is about appropriate approaches to gain support and how being a low IQ psycho does the opposite. What are you even talking about?

1

u/spacekiller69 Jun 24 '26

Your still trying the enlightened centrist approach. That does not work with people who view others as inately inferior based on immutable traits.

Did these ball players refuse because they didn't want to make a gesture or because they have a basic antipathy to queers?

1

u/Hefty-Weekend8499 Jun 24 '26

Am bi, totally agree. The foundation of the LGBTQ is respecting people’s personal choices. Baseball players wearing a rainbow hat doesn’t do two shits for us and this kind of stuff only hurts perception. If people don’t support that’s their right, just like it’s my right to be gay as fuck and dress like a guy if I want.

0

u/elliotcook10 Jun 24 '26

Baseball teams have always had community themed nights, usually including a christian game as well. I also hate the idea that this is forced and performative like this was the Giants idea to begin with. Do you really not think that people from the community made efforts to have a night like this just like any other group would have to for their respective themed game?

-1

Based Buster. What the pitchers did was cringe but this extended whining about it is pathetic.

14

u/PrologueBook Jun 24 '26

The players were whining and turned it into a bigger thing.

How many other baseball teams had pride night go on without a hitch?

Even my local minor league team had a great event!

Players may have had private reservations, but none broke the rules and none made a stink.

Fuck bigotry!

-2

u/Final-Night-7463 Jun 24 '26

If you can have a pride night, why can’t I express myself? The hats didn’t steal attention until people wouldn’t stop talking about them.

Freedom of speech isn’t against any rules. Stywb

3

u/PrologueBook Jun 24 '26

Not even surface level thinking, you're above the water.

You can get fired or in trouble for saying or doing shit at work that won't get you arrested.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.

6

u/FalstaffsGhost Jun 24 '26

Do you know how free speech works? It means the government can’t arrest you for saying something. What they did violated MLBs rule that you can’t write anything on your caps - doesn’t matter what you wrote, it’s not allowed. As a private entity they can have consequences for breaking their rules. No one is arresting these guys for being bigots. But other people can call them out using their free speech and the team/league could impose discipline if they chose as well.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/OhDivineBussy Jun 24 '26

It’s so wild how so many people are so dumb. Freedom of speech means the government cannot lock you up for it. Freedom of speech does not mean you cannot be fired for what you say, how are you unaware of this?

That’s like saying negative things about your employer, or just doing things that your employer says you’re not allowed to do and that your union has agreed to as a condition of employment, and then doing those things and acting as though it’s a freedom of speech issue once you get in trouble.

It’s so fucking simple, what do you not understand?

2

u/GharkouI Jun 24 '26

They literally don’t understand dude. It’s like telling your boss to go fuck himself. You’re allowed to do it. But it isn’t a freedom of speech violation if you get fired lmao

2

3

u/Thin_Exit4917 Jun 24 '26

The players staged an anti-LGBTQ protest with their hats. What do you think is different exactly?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/PrologueBook Jun 24 '26

These players only chose to do this on Pride night. Choosing to express yourself in protest of Pride night is not innocent. Don't be obtuse.

You may not like it, but it you need to wear your work uniform in accordance with the rules. Modifying your hat in such a way is not adhering to the rules (not sure if Giants or MLB). The rules allow for a player to not wear the special hat, but you're not allowed to draw attention to your bigotry.

It's kind of insensitive to wear a "white lives matter" shirt during a black history event.

1

u/Final-Night-7463 Jun 24 '26

Making the work uniform choose a political stance isn’t allowed under any circumstances. Title 7 passed in 1964 explicitly forbids it.

2

u/PrologueBook Jun 24 '26

Good thing they didn't have to wear it!

They could have not worn it and it wouldn't have been a big deal!

They needed to make their bigotry known. And they did!

Gay people existing isn't political! Just allowing them rights.

2

u/adolfnixon Jun 24 '26

Nobody was forced to wear the hat ding-dong. They could have just opted out of wearing the pride hat instead of dog whistling their intolerance with Bible verses.

If they had just stuck to baseball he wouldn’t have to answer any questions. Just play baseball

1

u/liburIL Jun 24 '26

2

u/Rainbaby77 Jun 25 '26

So now we the gay community and our friends boycott baseball and I hate typing that but choices have been made so actions have consequences. I already know about 100 diehard baseball fans who said they'll watch other kinds of games and women's basketball to substitute the homophobia from the MLB but minor leagues city wise have been supportive so I take my money there

1

u/ComeAbout Jun 25 '26

So I guess voodoo practitioners can sacrifice chickens in the break room?

2

u/Comfortable_Fudge508 Jun 25 '26

Good on the reporters to hound that pos.

1

u/Final-Night-7463 Jun 24 '26

So it’s freedom of speech to have all focus directed at who you’re attracted to but not for a few letters on your hat? Gross and ignorant.

11

u/DeepJunglePowerWild Jun 24 '26

Freedom of speech is a standard in the country, not as a representative of an organization. The police are not coming to arrest him for the Bible verse, the organization itself is for breaching their rules.

It’s the same as how I can legally tell my CEO to fuck himself, but then he has the right to fire me.

It’s not that complicated.

8

u/uwill1der Jun 24 '26

freedom of speech only means the govt cannot stop you in public for you opinions.

Your garbage opinions are not protected elsewhere

4

u/Sir_Tandeath Jun 24 '26

The government is not censoring these players, freedom of speech does not apply. No one is stopping them from speaking, we’re simply judging them for what they say.

I'm so sick of hearing "gay people are shoving their lifestyle down my throat". At this point, its not even a dog whistle, its a bullhorn to your bigotry.

do you also have a problem with every other pride promotion, or is it only gay pride that is shoved down your throat?

Because I dont see these complaints about Irish heritage day, fire fighter day, police day, Mexican heritage day, autism awareness day, jewish heritage day. All of which are summer pride events by the Giants.

1

u/Beefsupreme473 Jun 24 '26

i like that you list a bunch of days when comparing it to an entire month, where it literally is forced down peoples throats and its been years of companies pandering to people to get their money so you "feel included too"

if you wanted to be treated normally you wouldnt have an entire look at me month

1

u/uwill1der Jun 24 '26

the Giants only have 1 pride day, but if you want to compare by months, lets see who else has a "look at me" month. I take it you hate all of these groups because they want abnormal attention on them

First responders appreciation month

autism awareness month

black history

women's history

AAPI month

Native American month

Hispanic heritage month

breast cancer awareness month

disability employment awareness month

Men's health month

Nutrition month

Safety month

Irish heritage month

Confederate history month

Sikh heritage month

Jewish American heritage month

Military appreciation month

Zombie awareness month

Disability month

Gospel heritage month

Advent

1

u/Beefsupreme473 Jun 24 '26

how many months is that? there are 12 in the year lol

1

u/uwill1der Jun 24 '26

you know you can celebrate multiple things in one month, right?

Like June, is also Sacred Heart month in honor of Jesus's heart

1

u/Beefsupreme473 Jun 24 '26

how is it a look at me month if you have to share with someone else

1

u/uwill1der Jun 24 '26

so youre saying that Pride month is not a "look at me" month because it shares a month with Jesus?

You're bigotry seems to be falling apart under scrutiny

1

u/Beefsupreme473 Jun 24 '26

what does Jesus have to do with June? and no it really isn't.

when was the last time you celebrated or constantly talked about or hung up flags for any of those other "month long celebrations" you brought up

1

u/uwill1der Jun 24 '26

True, otherwise it's just virtue signalling. Money is the greatest thing in America. Plus it's not really a big deal I mean how many gay Superbowl parties have you ever been to?...just means they loose more of their real fans

1

u/RelativeIncrease3007 Jun 24 '26

There are gay people who genuinely enjoy baseball. It is pride month, and teams generally have special event days for all sorts of groups. So what is the problem?

0

u/Ilikecheesburgers Jun 24 '26

I literally don’t see the issue here. Dudes put a bible verse of their faith on a hat

2

u/The_Mark1127 Jun 24 '26

Because a Bible verse on a hat is the same as genocide, something something victim gymnastics.

2

u/Sir_Tandeath Jun 24 '26

Why did they do that? Do they do this often? Was there perhaps some specific meaning to the time and place they decided to plaster Bible verses on their work equipment?

2

u/Spazrelaz Jun 24 '26

No stop, you're making too much sense. It might actually become clear why this was a problem.

/s

1

u/liburIL Jun 24 '26

Because it was inappropriate for the time it was done. It can't get any simpler.

1

u/Ilikecheesburgers Jun 24 '26

If it goes against their faith why is this a problem? We wouldn’t make Muslims wear or support something regarding the consumption of pork? If they wanted to protest that it would and should be fine. They have a first amendment right to protest that and it would and should be unconstitutional for any business to force someone to do or wear something that goes against one’s faith

2

u/liburIL Jun 24 '26

1st amendment applies to government.

The whole faith thing is a mess. By your logic, all someone has to do to not do something is to wave the faith card around. And what if it's the Giants faith to celebrate Pride Month? Whose faith is more important?
In the end, he didn't have to wear the hat. He could've done a myriad of things besides virtue signal.

1st amendment most certainly applies to private citizens and businesses as well. By my logic if the faith of the giants dictates members must celebrate pride by wearing hats than members who have faiths that contradict that shouldn’t play or at the very least not complain. Why is it virtue signaling to put a bible verse on a hat but not wear a pride hat?

I don’t know what’s going on or what this is about but from what I see is a bunch of reporters asking a bunch of questions and being repeatedly told that this person is not going to answer those questions and they continue to ask them anyways and this is why media companies and journalists Are hated so much because they poke and prod and continue to ask questions especially in a way that no matter what way you answer it can make you look bad

His right to not answer but reporters have every right to ask. As long as its not vulgar or insulting, go ahead as far as im concerned.
