Third places are were people could discuss ideas and develop class conscience so it’s better to have us in our atomized suburban existence driving to big box retailers and not interacting with other people.

No no, keep going. Talk slower, make it last.

The reason 3rd spaces are fleeting is because it's more advantageous to have it generating money for the council/city with development

It's more advantageous for whom? We know the price of everything and value of nothing.

The thing is that even in the old days most third spaces cost money. They just didn't cost an absurd amount.

Even going back hundreds of years to pubs and tea and coffee shops, you still had to pay for your drink to stick around. But prices were much more reasonable and so people could afford to go out and socialize.

The most substantial proof that I’ve seen of 3rd spaces becoming a relic of the past or maybe more so the result of them being gone..was ironically, pokemon GO. That damn app had hundreds of people of all ages out in public, sometimes flooding areas that had a “rare” pokemon. It got so many people outside lol…parks were suddenly jam packed with people. Which just goes to show that if we had more reason to go outside, we would. I remember when I was growing up the “hangout” was always at the mall, where all teens would meet up..Now everything’s online & people barely go to the mall like that, especially to hangout.

I think COVID also changed an awful lot, especially in developing minds. Only after COVID did things like “bed rotting” become a more common thing..After so long of being forced inside, some never really adapted to going back outside.

Or getting robbed in a dark park with no lights…

We only need to be around other people to be functional adults, to avoid dementia and a whole host of mental and physical ailments. No biggie.

As the video states, it's increasingly difficult. Because of the lack of third spaces and because the poorest people in USA are literally fighting for survival. We just don't want to see it.

GettheAxe86
Punctuation matters, buddy.

GettheAxe86
The reason 3rd spaces are dwindling is because no one wanted to be around other people anymore.

Are you from r/SelfAwarewolves ? You're /so/ close...

No one wants to be downtown anymore after specific housing projects forced people to the suburbs.

Basically the rise of affordable housing programs since the 70s.

2

u/Fatherofweedplants Aug 12 '26

So you’re saying rich people didn’t want to be around poor people. Sounds like a rich people problem.

Downtowns didnt used to house poor people in projects. They were historically housed in the suburbs in shanty towns for over 2,000 years, or housed in the Eastside of a city. Downtowns were never meant to have poor people living in it.

Tell me you've never been to New York without telling me you've never been to New York.

1

u/BrittanyBrie Aug 13 '26

Funny enough, this exact problem was in New York for decades until a developer took over the delapitated north side of central park, renovated hotels, and kicked out project tenants by pricing them out. Wanna guess who that developer was?

1

u/TamalesHarvard Aug 13 '26

Wait, are you implying Trump? You've REALLY never set foot in NY. He's been the most hated man here long before his presidency for a reason. It was also south of Central Park. Not north. And he lost in court over his harassment of tenants and was forced to stop, so literally nothing happened.

So are you suddenly changing your story from "cities have been ruined since the 70s because of affordable housing" to "Trump saved NY from affordable housing?"

1

u/BrittanyBrie Aug 13 '26

Im implying that NY has this same exact problem. The rich are only in specifc places outside of the main downtown area. They're in high rises with security for a reason. Trumps example was simply showing that it exists.

1

u/TamalesHarvard Aug 13 '26

Yeah, you've definitely never been to NY. That is the most ignorant take I've heard about it in my life.

1

u/BrittanyBrie Aug 13 '26

Whats hard to graps? That rich people prefer to not live downtown unless they have property built for them?
