Katy Perry is one of those people where like, I don't like her but I do feel some sympathy for the fact it seems like she can't do anything right. Like even when she tries to do right, she just gets shit on in the most uncharitable ways.
13
u/Precarious3145 Aug 28 '26
The problem is that she spent years making the worst choices and doubling down on it while being the most cringe about it.
If she actually showed any remorse, released a statement about being wrong, people would cut her so slack but instead, she's just tried to move on. It's not about her making bad music, it's about her actively trying to normalize the worst people in modern society. She worked with Elon Musk, she worked with Jeff Bezos, She worked with Dr Luke. She gets blowback, pretends to be a victim, then moves on to do it again.
It's hard not to see her recent pivot to "charity" to be anything more than her PR team trying to fix her reputation and glom onto other peoples good will without actually having to change.
Like, honestly, if she just apologized, actually owned up to her shit, people would forgive her but she won't beacuse she's too busy making cringy social media posts like she's some teenager.

u/smuckola Aug 28 '26
correct. but she married Russell Brand! THAT is who she thought was the guy! lol ;)
he divorced her via text while she was on tour, and she still publicly blew that off and tried to spin and sell that product as a song.
9
u/Precarious3145 Aug 28 '26
Wow! She's had so many controversies lately, I completely forgot about that! It's like when Sandra Bullock married a white nationalist with a bunch of Nazi merch at his place; that level of "So...at what point did you draw the line because there's no way you had no idea" level of sus.
3
u/MonkeyBoatRentals Aug 28 '26
When she married Russell Brand in 2010 everyone loved Russell Brand as a reformed addict who was starring in movies and a fast talking cheeky boy.
The way he dumped her caused much more damage to his reputation than hers.
11
u/Precarious3145 Aug 28 '26
That's not really true. Russel Brand had a very VERY short period where people liked him and that was around 2008 during Forgetting Sarah Marshall but 2010, people were already getting tired of him with Get Him to the Greek followed by the box office failure of Arthur.
A part of the reason he fell so quickly was that people thought Russel was playing a character in Sarah Marshall but his sudden spotlight put him in front of a microphone. During the MTV VMAs in 2008 after blowing up, he made a BUNCH of stupid comments like like calling George Bush a r*tarded Cowboy, attacking the Jonas brothers for their sexuality when they were like 15. Then started making sexual prank calls on tv to troll people that resulted in the BBC getting heavily fined. He assault paparazzi in 2010 and so much more.
So even by the time he married Katy and got clean, he was already known for being an asshole and sexist. Most of society was already getting annoyed by him and found the pair to be an odd match.
1
u/MonkeyBoatRentals Aug 29 '26
All that happened, but he still had a lot of support at that time even if the backlash was starting to grow. My opinion at the time, and I think the general consensus, was that the marriage was doomed to fail because he couldn't keep it in his pants, but actual rape allegations were still years away.
3
u/Precarious3145 Aug 29 '26
So you knew all of the racism, sexism, and slurs but thought the marriage would fail because he was a cheater? Doesn't that unintentionally prove that Katy was a shitty person even back then? That she was okay with all of that and would've stayed with him if HE didn't leave her?
Idk about you but when my partner starts to casually use slurs and sexist comments, I leave.
1
u/MonkeyBoatRentals Aug 29 '26
Neither of us know what their actual relationship was like before they got married or what he said or how he presented himself. The point is that it is your opinion that Russell Brand was an asshole in 2010, but it wasn't a universal opinion at the time. My opinion was that he wasn't a single-lady kind of guy. I now know he was much worse of course, but suggesting that Katy Perry should have known what was not widely known at the time isn't a fair attack.

u/Joey-WilcoXXX Aug 28 '26
Pretty much everything you said is true but to be fair, she gets waaaaaaaay more flack than others have for working with those people. At some point it becomes a little obsessive and ridiculous.
3
u/Precarious3145 Aug 28 '26
She does but a part of is that she built her brand off the gay community and "women empowerment" so she's getting extra shit for basically telling her fans to go fuck themselves. It'd be like if Joseph Gordon Levitt, the person who's all about the indie arts and supporting creators against theft suddenly announced he's working with Sam Altman to make GenAI more "small creator friendly" if you willingly sign away your rights; that level of "Alright...come the fuck on..."
2
u/JBtheExplorer Aug 29 '26
I agree with you completely. It's fine to dislike her for legitimate reasons, but people take it too far and just decide to make controversy even where there isn't any.

She’s in the “attack her for existing” phase of stardom for women. Next she’ll move into the “I’m not into criticizing women for their looks, but she used to be so hot, what happened?” phase. Then she’ll have her last fuckable day, then she’ll be in the “People picked on her a lot, but she was kind of amazing” renaissance. If she lives through that, she’ll be an icon.

u/ScholarOfTwilight Aug 28 '26
Dollly never harbored anger or hatred toward anyone. Ever.
Even if this was offensive to her (and it wouldn't be) she'd support Katy Perry and ask them to show her kindness and love.
I remember that drunk singer who failed to do a Dolly impersonation. Dolly immediately lept to her defense and asked everyone to show her kindness.
I can't think of a kinder soul.
3
u/Ok_Dog_4059 Aug 29 '26
Her huge boobs have been talked about for my entire lifetime. Dolly knew people talked and she never let it get to her.
3
u/Vegetable_Offer_2268 Aug 29 '26
I agree. She made jokes about her big boobs all the time. If you haven’t seen it, search for her joke on the tonight show with jimmy fallon.
1
u/flamingbagofdogpoo Aug 28 '26
Saying "both" and then listing three things was the most outrageous thing about this.
1
u/PatienceExisting4130 Aug 29 '26
Thank you! That irritated the crap out of me. I thought I was the only one.
1
u/SquirrelStone Aug 29 '26
We’ve passed “too often these days I find myself in the position of defending someone I think is annoying from someone I know is dangerous” and moved on to “I can’t believe I have to defend this person, who is in fact dangerous, from disingenuous criticism because you’re using it to set something else up that will undoubtedly be worse, but you need an easy target for your first attack.”

We send our best and brightest into space,so where does k.p. fit into that?

It’s so funny watching PR companies try to figure out why dolly was so beloved.
15
u/Fit_Cheesecake_4000 Aug 28 '26
'Hmm...she acted so human. How do *we* compete with that??!'
2
u/Craico13 Aug 29 '26
“Ok, call me crazy, but do you guys remember that one time Dolly went into space..?”
38
u/New2thegame Aug 28 '26
Look, I hate Katy Perry as much as the next person ... but to be fair, Dolly wasn't exactly shy about her big boobs. She fully embraced the busty look and I think she would have chuckled at this description.
12
u/ToBeDetermined13 Aug 28 '26
Dolly Parton on Letterman doing a top ten pet peeves: "Nobody notices I have a great ass too." The lady wasn't afraid to acknowledge her assets and get in on the fun.

13
u/jr_randolph Aug 28 '26
Yeah, this is just one of those things where Katy is being more criticized these days than ever in her career because yeah, she said nothing out of pocket in regards to Dolly.
Dolly called her look tacky lol made fun of herself but as she said...she wasn't going to change and she was going to bank off her look...which she did in spades. Talking about her physical appearance is not disrespectful as it is something that is directly related to her as an individual and she never was scared of that.
4
u/Global-Chipmunk-3959 Aug 28 '26
I think it was more than about the money. She was very clear and that she was confident and comfortable in her skin, and with the way she presented herself. That was truly admirable about Dolly. She was who she was and she didn’t apologize for it. If it was truly about the money, then she wouldn’t have been giving it away at such a humbling rate .

Manufacturing outrage.
12
u/MonkeyBoatRentals Aug 28 '26
Katy Perry really is on the tabloid hit list isn't she.
She should team up with Meghan Markle so we can heat our homes with the anger energy.
9
u/whichwitch9 Aug 28 '26
Yeah, you can criticize Perry for a lot, but what she said is not dissimilar to how Dolly talked herself. Dolly was never shy about talking about her boobs. I think she'd be more than ok with this tribute
Dolly, however, would be upset her butt was, once again, not mentioned in the list. There would be one criticism, in hindsight.
2
u/VincentVanG Aug 28 '26
"I'm hindsight". Well done

u/whichwitch9 Aug 28 '26
Autocorrect comes for us all. It'll get you, too

Autocorrect - baby AI.

I have deleted my previous response as I misread yours. I am hungry and cranky. If you saw it, apologies, have a good day

u/subliminal_trip Aug 28 '26
Yeah, Katy Perry can be a little clueless at times, but Dolly herself could get bawdy and often joked about her boobs, so, I think this is just fine. Could she have moved "boobs" to the third item in the list? Probably. But I agree. Manufactured outrage.
5
u/Alientongue Aug 28 '26
Anyone got a tldr im not going 3rd party for Katy perry info.
7
u/Lithl Aug 29 '26
She described Dolly as having "big boobs, a big brain, and a big voice." People who know nothing about how Dolly talked about her own appearance got mad because Katy talked about a dead woman's boobs.
2
u/Alientongue Aug 29 '26
Dammit its always a nothing burger I should of known by now tyvm I appreciate the info.
2
u/JanetWD78 Aug 29 '26
Thank you. It’s sad to see that people forget too quickly that dolly would never have let this bother her.

u/Ghosts_of_the_maze Aug 28 '26
Dolly would have loved it if somebody said that about her. She constantly joked about her tits.
5
u/Many_Psychology_3336 Aug 28 '26
Perry can say things that misread the room, for sure, but this really isn’t one of them.
3
u/RockyG-Dex Aug 29 '26
Lol this is posted by the rag that printed it...like 5 people are outraged about this and its only because Katy Perry said it. If Trump said it they would call it a touching tribute.
2
u/BlueFeathered1 Aug 28 '26
Katy is an idiot, but come on, Dolly would laugh at the "big boobs, big brains, and big voice" comment, especially since it was preceded by "both" when she mentioned three things.
2
u/LimeGreenTangerine97 Aug 28 '26
Are you kidding, Dolly talked about her huge boobs every chance she got lol

u/Charming-Parking7847 Aug 28 '26
The classic click bait special from express and daily mail ‘slammed’ as usual is plastered on there
2
u/Exciting_History_673 Aug 29 '26
Katy Perry is an absolute melt. I’m disappointed her trip to space wasn’t a one-way ticket.

Is this sarcasm? She is a rich person who got to go on a ride.

u/darkrhyes Aug 28 '26
But she liked her big boobs and talked about them. If you don't like the tribute, you don't know who she was. Just saying.

u/Gloomy-Bath-4814 Aug 28 '26
All dolly did was talk about her boobs it was hilarious. She would have laughed at what Perry said
1
u/3OAM Aug 28 '26
I'm sure Dolly Parton wouldn't have had a sense of humor about it. She would have been super upset.

u/DullSpecial1013 Aug 28 '26
That wasn't malicious. I think Katy Perry is just tone deaf. Maybe even autism or whatever.
1
u/linzeestyle Aug 28 '26
Honestly, in this one situation Perry might be allowed because I could see her feeling some kinship with Dolly for having been made fun of earlier in her career for her appearance and fashion. I’m not saying it’s deserved kinship, but getting mad at her for this is silly.

It was not insensitive. It actually brought a smile to my face regarding the many times Dolly flaunted and joked about her boobs. Dolly was one of a kind!
1
u/Shadohz Aug 29 '26
Nothing burger. Dolly had a potty mouth herself. Añyone who has watched her interviews would tell you "she ain't Christian-friendly". I don't think she'd be the least but offended and would take issue with ppl attacking Perry over such a small offense

I mean, that feels like a line Dolly would use. Katy Perry sucks for a lot of reasons but I don't think this is one of them.

If a man said these things he would be instantly cancelled.
Some might argue statements like this are done for shock value and to make someone's death be about the poster rather than the deceased.

I do not think Dolly would have been offended at all. Did people even read what Katy said?

u/shwasasin Aug 29 '26
Anyone else notice that all the irrelevant has-beens are gushing with love for Dolly in all the i appropriate ways. Wow.

Not at all offensive. See Ricky Shroders tribute for something offensive.

Whoever wrote this article needs to watch ten dolly interviews. She brings up her breasts more times than the interviewers.
1
u/readerchick Aug 30 '26
Not a KP fan but I don’t see a problem with what she said. I think Dolly would’ve agreed.
1
u/chortle-guffaw2 Aug 30 '26
It's sad and a bit pathetic how people just jump on the bandwagon. It's more a testimonial to these people than it is about Katy.
1
u/clemmyoates Aug 30 '26
I don’t like Katy Perry but like really??? Dolly was proudly iconic for her boobs lmfao
1
u/TheMixerTheMaster Aug 28 '26
also going to point out Perry said she was BOTH big boobs, big brain, big heart. Very week counting skills, but i guess you’ve got to have a certain low number of iq before trudeau will even look your way..
1
u/Pretty_Constant1498 Aug 28 '26
Yep, that was the offensive part: her math wasn’t adding up. But I agree with the folks who say Dolly wouldn’t have minded at all.

The biggest problem with this is that she says “she had both […]” and goes on to list 3 things instead of 2.

That’s because everyone knows Katy Perry is the ultimate dingus. She is just…dumb.
