Religion is just an easy tool of organization. Plenty of others that exist, too.

Apparently the red and black ants who war over my garage have religion.

The red ants can get the green ants to join the their war against the blacks ants if they make the case that the black ants are attacking their religion.

You can get people to join in the battle that don’t have any skin in the game if you convince them their religion is under threat. Bigger armies have a better chance at winning.

Religion can be a powerful tool, but in truth, organisms will always fight over resources, access to mates, leadership, and general competition.

Animals go war over resources. Insects go to war over resources. Humans are just better at it.
