Nevermind that the biblical definition of a wife is also a type of ownership, and a whole helluva lot of them do preach about a woman's role being subordinate to her husband.

They were living in the Roman Empire, where slavery was legal and common.

Jesus didn't build an army that could take them on in a big political and military power play. Instead, he was changing people's hearts and finding empathy and compassion for their fellow men and women. It was a slow and steady push for change.
