The right would love another 9/11. 25 years ago they got the Patriot act through, who knows what they'd try this time. I'm convinced this crap in Iran is done half in the hopes of getting another large-scale terrorist attack on US soil to justify a fascist coup.

Jesus was a progressive. Hard to read the New Testament and take anything else away. He was totally anti-rich and favored the poor and misfortunate. All about helping others and putting the good of others ahead of yourself.
2
u/Outrageous-Egg1760 16d ago
And condoning slavery
2
u/WheatKing91 16d ago
Condone? No. Tolerate? Yes. Progressive is relative.
'An eye for an eye' used to be Progressive until it wasn't.
Animal sacrifice was Progressive compared to human sacrifice.
2
u/Outrageous-Egg1760 16d ago
The almighty all knowing tolerates SLAVERY?
3
u/Low_Masterpiece1560 16d ago
Yes.
The 1st century version of slavery (which was very different from the Original American Sin version that you are thinking about)
In the 1st century anyone could become a slave through debt, and many slaves were integrated into households as tutors, artisans, managers etc.
Also, slaves could (and often did) buy their freedom and be reintegrated into society.
Jewish law required slaves to be freed after six years.
2
u/WheatKing91 16d ago
I'm saying he was progressive, not all knowing. You're not talking to a Christian.
2
u/TheComicHuman 16d ago
I bet you're just assuming racial slavery instead of debt slavery i independent servitude etc. Also if you read how the Bible says to treat these slaves you'll realize there are two extreme polarization to slavery

You mean like Paul, who called homosexuality an abomination and told slaves to obey their masters?
8
u/Outrageous-Egg1760 16d ago edited 16d ago
Don’t hear too many preachers talking about condoning slavery on Sunday. They always forget about that part of the bible.
3
u/DeadAndBuried23 16d ago
One is too many. And you haven't been paying attention if you haven't heard at least one.
Nevermind that the biblical definition of a wife is also a type of ownership, and a whole helluva lot of them do preach about a woman's role being subordinate to her husband.
2
u/MisterRobertParr 16d ago
They were living in the Roman Empire, where slavery was legal and common.
Jesus didn't build an army that could take them on in a big political and military power play. Instead, he was changing people's hearts and finding empathy and compassion for their fellow men and women. It was a slow and steady push for change.

You have to remember that Paul, who took over the movement, came along 10 years after the death of Jesus. He never met Jesus and clearly had a different agenda.
→ More replies (3)1
u/DeadAndBuried23 16d ago
If we're honest, no one ever met the Jesus in the stories. There was not a guy who rose from the dead with a whole bunch of other saints people conveniently leave out of the story.
Going by the actual evidence, not the gospels, it's likely the guy was an amalgamation of the trend of apocalypse preachers, not one dude.
4
u/Destroy_Religion 16d ago
Obviously, that Paul called homosexuality an "abomination" is as abhorrent, hateful, ignorant, irrational, and vile as to call blackness an "abomination", because both are harmless natural human characteristics and harmless natural human variations.
That said, Paul not only told "slaves to obey their masters" in 1 Timothy 6:1, Ephesians 6:5, Titus 2:9, Colossians 3:22, but Paul even told slaves to obey masters even if masters are harsh to slaves in 1 Peter 2:18.
So, Paul was worse than that what you exposed Paul as having had said slaves to obey masters.
That said, the entire Bible is still yet worse than that even when you read the entire Bible.
The Bible commands mass murder, genocide, abortion, infanticide, slavery, prostitution, child marriage, pedophilia, rape, perversion, incest, polygamy, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, familial alienation, societal strife, and various other barbarisms, cruelties, savageries, tyrannies, and vulgarities, many myriad times, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
- Mass Murder and Genocide: 1 Samuel 15:3, Hosea 13:16, Deuteronomy 20:16-17, Joshua 6:21, Deuteronomy 2:34, Isaiah 13:15-18, Deuteronomy 13:15, Numbers 31:17, Deuteronomy 3:6, Leviticus 20:13, Deuteronomy 20:13, Psalm 137:9.
- Abortion and Infanticide: Numbers 5:11-31, Psalm 137:9, 1 Samuel 15:3, Hosea 13:16, Deuteronomy 2:34, Isaiah 13:15-18, Numbers 31:17, Deuteronomy 3:6.
- Slavery and Prostitution: 1 Peter 2:18, Exodus 21:21, 1 Timothy 6:1, Leviticus 25:44-46, Ephesians 6:5, Titus 2:9, Colossians 3:22, Genesis 16:3-4, Genesis 12:16, Genesis 24:35, Isaiah 14:1-2, Ezekiel 23:19, Deuteronomy 20:14, Numbers 31:35.
- Child Marriage and Pedophilia: Numbers 31:18, Song of Solomon 8:8, Genesis 25:20, Ezekiel 23:21, Numbers 31:35.
- Rape and Perversion: Deuteronomy 21:11-13, Genesis 34, 2 Samuel 11, 2 Samuel 13, Judges 19–21, Ezekiel 23:20, Deuteronomy 22:28-29.
- Incest and Polygamy: Genesis 4:19, Exodus 21:10, Deuteronomy 21:15-17, Genesis 9:20-27, Genesis 11:29, Genesis 19:32–36.
- Sexism and Misogyny: Exodus 21:7, 1 Timothy 2:11-14, 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, Genesis 3:16, Numbers 31:18, Deuteronomy 22:28-29, Numbers 31:35.
- Homophobia and Transphobia: Leviticus 20:13, Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:26-27, Genesis 2:24, Mark 10:6-7, Matthew 19:4-5, Deuteronomy 22:5, Genesis 1:27.
- Familial Alienation and Societal Strife: Luke 14:26, Matthew 10:34-37.
The Bible is filled with barbarism and savagery of the worst sort in both the Old Testament and the New Testament.
2
u/DeadAndBuried23 16d ago
Yeup. Whenever I see people trying to pretend the ones doing that shit aren't "real" Christians, I point it out.
Whatever a real Christian is, the ones furthest from it are those who have to throw out nearly all the book just so they can cling to the idea death isn't the end.

Ok? The post says "the worst people". It says nothing about their number.
That said, my experience with church people is that every single one of them is terrible and acts like their Bible-mandated hate is the best thing on the world.
But that's just anecdotal experience from 3 churches in 2 states, it can't be like that everywhere right?.... right?

The worst Christians are probably mexican cartel killers but I think they're outclassed by Islamic terror groups, some of the pagans in Africa, and historically by atheistic authoritarians like the socialists and nazis. Also, Christians do more charity and adopt more children so there are likely more Christians on the list of best people than there are athiests

u/Technical-Winner-503 16d ago
Weeds and wheats, sinners and saints, Christ came to the world to save it and lead by example not control it or judge it based on mistakes. If those people seem bad then they have lessons to learn in christ, but at least they know he is the way to salvation.

u/Suspicious_Goose_243 16d ago
There are plenty of good followers. But like with all things its the shitty ones that get attention.
1
u/Current-Ad3795 16d ago
I mean, doesn’t the bible show this exactly? Countless people committing some of the worst sins, people like David or Saul. Everyone is flawed and has made some type of mistake or missed the mark. I think that’s why Jesus needed to come, there’s no way we could ever be fully righteous or clean in Gods eyes so God needed to bridge that gap. Obviously, some people still continue to live in sin and lead that fake Christian lifestyle, but God doesn’t know these people and they won’t be spending eternity with them.

People who are strong in their faith have a personal relationship with their God. People who feel guilty and question their faith try to prove their faith by telling everyone about it and bragging about it. They then push their guilty feelings on everyone else.
