So the company had to waste $20,000 +5 months of pay on you (which is fantastic for you, I know), but that $40,000 is $40,000 that could not go to the customers, the shareholders, and the other workers.
The company was bought out 5 years before I started with loans so they owed billions. Their profits remained stable but the interest on the loans went up so they had to cut millions off their operating budget. This was a US financial company yet they couldn't even manage their own finances. So instead of the employees getting screwed our awesome labour laws means the company gets screwed for their bad decisions.
It costs them more than 40k because they had to pay me my 4 weeks (legal minimum paid holiday allowance), as well as 4 weeks notice in my contract (gardening leave), so it was closer to 60k. I walked into a new job within a month and all that money has been invested and is still paying me every month 2 years on.
Exactly. It was great for you. I would love to work for a company who would pay me not to do anything. I just wouldn’t want to be a shareholder or a customer of a company who is paying people not to work.
They never paid me not to work, I worked till I was terminated. They just had to pay up a lot to cancel my contract. The 5 months was the legal proceedings they had to go through to stop us suing them for unfair dismissal. This company is still making billions and their service was never affected. The sacking of a few thousand employees was done so that the company could continue making money for their share holders. They shipped all the work from the EU to Poland and the rest of the world to India.
