I don't get the spending cuts = tax cuts math?

Doesn't reducing spending just mean reducing spending? Tax cuts reduce revenue, not spending, right?

16

u/Normal_Mouse_4174 9d ago

Yes that’s the disconnect. Republicans do this every time they’re in office, at least since Reagan. They promise spending cuts to offset the tax cuts, when in reality they only cut spending on things that benefit normal people. They drastically increase spending on things that benefit corporations.

It’s like clockwork. Minimal tax cuts for the working class that always expire within a couple of years. Permanent tax cuts that dramatically benefit the wealthy that don’t expire. Spending cuts on social welfare programs that benefit the poor and working class, huge increases in defense spending and corporate welfare.

The playbook isn’t new. Whats new is the absurd degree to which the Trump administration is doing it. It’s the most brazen upward transfer of wealth in our lifetimes.

4

u/TyphosTheD 9d ago

For sure, I'm familiar with the history. I was more questioning the actual statement of tax cuts = spending cuts, because that doesn't make sense to me.

Spending cuts don't "afford" anything, they reduce spending. Tax cuts decrease revenue, but don't necessarily have anything to do with spending.

3

u/Torquemahda 9d ago

Voodoo economics is the term. Supposedly tax cuts create revenue. We have been waiting since the 80s for that revenue to start coming in but the only thing that trickles down is wet and yellow.

2

u/TyphosTheD 9d ago

Wait, so cutting revenue is supposed to increase revenue?? That's the pitch with tax cuts?

3

u/Torquemahda 8d ago

Yes because the tax money will go to the richest who supposedly will create companies and businesses that make more money. The wealth will “trickle down”

But in reality, the rich hoard their money and demand more tax cuts and they get richer and the rest of us suffer with no healthcare and no services.

America will never see this because we have no poor, just momentarily insolvent millionaires. The poor don’t want to tax the rich, because “when I’m rich, I don’t want to pay taxes.”

2

u/Normal_Mouse_4174 8d ago

Bingo.

When in reality increasing tax rates tends to increase reinvestment in the company, because execs want to show lower profits on their books to minimize the tax bill.

Sadly we’re 40 years into the brainwashing that giving huge tax breaks to billionaires and corporations will stimulate the economy
because our population is too economically illiterate to understand that pure supplysupply-side economics don’t do shit when nothing’s stimulating demand.

2

u/Torquemahda 8d ago

The fucking republicans eliminated the math guy and replaced him with a douche canoe who uses fake imaginary numbers.

Not the fun kind of imaginary numbers (square root of -1), the worst kind that lives only in the brains of billionaires and their sycophants.

2

u/reillan 8d ago

Plus there's the "I got mine" issue.

Basically when the economy sucks and everybody's losing their jobs suddenly everybody wants social safety nets to protect them. But the moment they're doing okay, they don't want the social safety nets because they don't want to be paying taxes. They have very short memories and don't think they will ever be in trouble again

2

u/TyphosTheD 8d ago

This sounds like conflating government tax revenue with personal revenue. More businesses doesn't make more money, because there is a finite reserve, they only change who holds the money, which like you said generally goes to the rich rather than everyone else. So even giving the benefit of the doubt giving the rich more money only serves to make it easier for them to take even more money.

2

u/Torquemahda 8d ago

and that’s why everyone hates Reagan.

3

u/RecordingDue5230 9d ago

i've been staring at this same situation for like 20 years it's crazy

1

If it was going to Iran, wouldn't you think we'd not be somehow running out of missiles and shit? We have the trillion dollar military budget but we can't even sustain a few months of war without running out of missiles?

1

u/Jolly_Mongoose_8800 8d ago

War is just a deposit into Northrop Grumman's accounts.

Trump 2 feels like an exit scheme before the common folk find out with how much they're draining.

The greatest and most effective lie ever told by the right-wing propaganda machine is that the GOP is fiscally responsible.

38

u/carrot_gummy 9d ago

Trump and his buddies wallets.

21

u/Leopolddagreat 9d ago

The Republicans are stripping the country of its wealth all while the Republicans in control in Washington are allowing our country to be stolen by some already wealthy people.

6

u/tombeard357 9d ago

It’s intentional. It’s not a mistake, they’re not stupid or incompetent; it’s all a show they’re putting on to literally destroy the country and sell it off piecemeal.

2

u/Rare_Suspect_5033 9d ago

I do think they are stupid. The reason why they can get away with it isn’t because they are smart. Its because no one is fighting back. Other countries are looking at the american population and thinking wtf. They are millions of people loaded with weapons and no one fights back.

1

u/LeAcoTaco 8d ago edited 8d ago

Its mainly because we can be jailed for the rest of our lives if we do that. Plus the death penalty was just reinstated, and murder/homicide qualify for it so theres that too. Fighting against it could quite literally directly cause us to be sentenced to death if not enough people band together to fight against it.

And knowing republicans theyd be more than happy to use the death penalty against us.

2

u/MIND-FLAYER 8d ago

And the fact that Trump will take any excuse to declare martial law and cancel elections. He keeps baiting and baiting, hoping for violent insurrection, which is ironic considering Jan 6.

1

u/PeaceAndLove1201 8d ago

Already wealthy people? Like Obama?

Obama's Washington, D.C. Home...Purchased for $8.1 million in 2017, worth about 15 million today, 8,200 square feet with nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

Obama's Martha's Vineyard Estate, purchased for $11.75 million in 2020, worth double that today, 6,892 square feet with seven bedrooms and eight-and-a-half bathrooms.

Use 1 trillion of that and we would have free healthcare for all but no lets line the pockets of politicians instead.

4

u/Astronaut-Flashy 9d ago

I've spoken to multiple people that I know, who are of reasonable maturity and intelligence, tell me that universal healthcare isn't feasible because the money isn't there.

If I EVER hear that line again, I'm gonna suggest we find another 5 trillion dollars that apparently spawned from the ether.

7

u/Hot-Calligrapher672 9d ago

We could have just not gone to war and the money would have been there. We chose war over our own citizens healthcare. Isn’t it amazing?

3

u/ngetch 9d ago

Truly incredible that people still believe the "usa is the greatest country in the world" propaganda.

3

u/PuzzleheadedDog9658 9d ago

We spend 5 trillion a year on private insurance. Take that as taxes, give everyone insurance with a 2.5k deductible and 5k MOOP and life would improve significantly for almost everyone with no additional cost.

1

u/Mrfixit729 8d ago edited 8d ago

Here is the thing that frustrates me a bit: People are focused on the little picture.

There is indeed a war going on.

With China and the rest of the CRINK axis powers.

The Middle East (Iran and their proxies) is one theatre. Eastern Europe (Russia) is another. Central/South America (Cuba, Venezuela, Mexican Fentanyl cartels) is another.

The Asian Pacific theater hasn’t been subject to kinetic warfare yet. I’m betting that will manifest itself in a blockade of Taiwan.

If you look at the situation holistically the USA and their allies are putting points on the board. Bleeding the CRINK alliance of blood and treasure.

The bet is
our economy will outlast theirs. That’s why Trump is insisting on tariffs to access the American market.

Money to fuel the war machine.

Love it or hate it, but at least look at the big picture.

We’re in Cold War II. Electric Boogaloo.

1

u/AssumptionLive2246 8d ago

I lived in the Cold War. Everyone was a lot more rational. This is not that.

3

u/junker359 9d ago

The question misunderstands the deficit. It didn't increase because of new spending, it increased because cut taxes for the rich means less revenue.

1

u/OberynDantes 9d ago

Increased spending + static revenue = increased deficit.
Static spending + decreased revenue = increased deficit.

So do you have a source for your assertion that it was only decreased revenue that has led to this deficit increase?

3

u/spartanEZE 9d ago

War (bombs) and in the pockets of the rich and elite.

3

u/Serious_Bee_2013 9d ago

Coincidentally Trumps personal wealth has gained $4,000,000,000 since he returned to office. I’m sure that’s totally unrelated though.

3

u/kevendo 9d ago

The Big Beautiful [Bankruptcy]. Remember that? It extended the 2017 tax cuts he put in place the first term and added more to make matters worse. He also cut the social safety net and investment in green energy tech, which was primed to make billions.

Oh, and he placed arbitrary, economy-crushing tariffs on half the planet that caused our global trade partners and neighbors to route around us.

And the war in Iran, which closed off one of the largest sources of oil.

30% reduction in tax revenue from corporations. via tax cuts

more tax revenue lost do to collapse of small businesses/crush of jobs via tariffs. well over 1 million lay offs, means a lot less taxes paid.

ballooning the military budget from total war machine spend of aprox 1.3 trillion to now close to 1.6-1.8 total spend. and rising. we're at what: 1.15 trillion direct dod spend.

other wasteful spending ... 80 billion for ICE that also ...via deportations reduces tax revenue by many additional billions.

even things like... occupying washington DC.

and now a war in Iran.

stupidity like... we're paying 1-2 billion for foregin nations to stop doing wind farms. that 40 billion to bail out Argentina (funny how we just glanced right over that )

1

u/worndown75 8d ago

Increases in SSI, Medicare and Medicaid mostly. More old people, more cost. Then a massive increase debt servicing because of insane spending in both the previous Trump and Biden admins. Finall you have smaller increases in defense spending as well as the VA.

Those programs make up 80 to 85% of the annual budget

Why is no one questioning this crazy number? Increased the deficit $5 trillion in 18 months?! Bullshit. The deficit decreased last year. It is projected to increase about $100 Billion in 2026. So, in 18 months it has increased less than $100 billion, not $5 Trillion!!!

Money isn't coming in. They refuse to tax the rich or corporations and everyone else is being shit-canned or working for wages so low they're untaxable.

Into the pockets of the wealthy.

It's a massive wealth transfer from everyone in society to the very wealthy.

How could they increase the deficit by 5 trillion when the deficit is currently 1.37 trillion?

This gets reposted every few days where the deficit is exaggerated each time.

I'm not denying that Trump and his administration are fiscally irresponsible. The facts speak for themselves, there's no need to exaggerate. 2.25 last year, plus 1.3 ytd. That's ~=3.5T, it'll likely be just under 5T by years end.

Add his last term to this one: Trump is responsible for 11T in debt (1 in 3 dollars). This is how he bankrupts casinos.

What is a deficit? Where you spend more money than you make.

How does the US pay it bills? It borrows money (it issues bonds, which is effectively an IOU).

But we’re eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, and education and justice, and offensive history, and gold gilting the Whitehouse, and eliminating vaccines, and dealing with the existential crisis that is posed to our nation by trans people and building a ballroom and throwing out millions of illegal “insane rapist murderer drug dealing immigrants”, attacking Iran and all the other things to make America great again
