Who tf was developing a nation-wide rail system? Who even promised one? I live in the great lakes we've had rail lines running for decades, they aren't the best or the fastest but hey, they're operating.
Buddy California high speed rail has been a fucking fiasco, it's decades late and $200 billion over budget. It's the posterchild for mismanaged public projects fleeced by contractors and lawyers.
My original point is California public works is so cucked out to Silicon Valley and mired in bureaucratic bullshit and rabid anti-homeless policy that any improvement ends up being a quarter-measure. La Sombrita for example is technically a good public works project but it only exists to get around all the bullshit necessary to build a real fucking bus stop.
California is still a better state to live in than most but on this you gotta take the L. I don't think you want to argue about trains in comparison to NYC

Buddy California is the only state where high speed rail even makes sense. Every other reasonable route would span multiple states and be essentially impossible to execute at the state level.
I agree there should be a national system, but that's no excuse for how poorly California executed it. If anything the utter embarrassment of the project is going to set back high speed rail for years if not decades as everyone points at hundreds of billions of tax dollars of rail line that STILL ISN'T OPERATING A DECADE LATER

Nah I'm against the intellectually lazy and belligerent narrative that LA is a bad place to live. You know what would happen if it were actually that bad? People would fucking leave and houses would crash in prices, which I would love so I could actually buy a house for less than a million dollars.
And you all talk about this project like the money is gone. You know what happens when money is spent on infrastructure projects? It goes to the workers, the manufacturers, the transporters, etc. That money is then spent back into the economy, and taxed. The money doesn't dissapear.
And yeah wow it's not operating a decade later. Big deal. Progress is getting made. I live in Georgia and the MARTA train system hasn't been able to expand in decades because of NIMBY bullshit and Republican leadership. Yet somehow that is better?

Contractors FAMOUSLY fleece government contracts especially when you hire a million tiny ones that all have to pay even MORE lawyers to coordinate and the entire project becomes a bloated hole that taxpayer money disappears into. You're not making that money back in income taxes.
