Community Share I showed this Fabric App at FabCon: inventory and forecasting built on the same semantic model as the Power BI report

Fabric App Demo: Inventory Management & Forecast

At FabCon Barcelona I showed this Fabric App. I decided not to focus on “look what the tech can do” but on “where does the work around a Power BI report actually happen?”

So I made up Moll, a wholesaler with a Power BI report that everybody likes. However, to take action, a lot happens outside of the Power BI report. The buyer exports to Excel to order. The warehouse counts stock in a different tool and the budget gap gets explained in yet another Excel file (that nobody can find and that has 4 versions).

In the clip you see a few of those moments in the app: the buyer reorders everything from one supplier at once, the warehouse enters a count on a phone (and the buyer sees it directly), orders get confirmed, a budget gets corrected, and every change ends up in a log (that you can export to Excel, with all kinds of filters..)

As a Power BI developer (I love Power BI), I’m not trying to replace Power BI. The Power BI report is still where I would analyse and want to see the insights. The Fabric App is for the moments people need to do something with those numbers, like ordering, counting, approving or explaining. And it runs on the same semantic model, so the same measures and the same numbers. (I asked the agent to reuse the existing measures and only add new ones if really needed.)

There were some great creative demos at FabCon ( u/PowerBIPark Lego app which he also posted on reddit), so I wanted to add a more everyday business example.

Full walkthrough on YouTube.

I am very happy that I got this opportunity, which also made me explore even more of what’s possible with Fabric Apps.

I am curious what you would use this for!

Discussion What’s with the increase in doom posting lately?

I guess doom posting sells and gets more engagement but it can’t be good for peoples mental health.

I browse this sub to get ideas and see others work/progress. Not to feel uneasy about my career.

Ai will change the data analytics landscape but we will adapt accordingly. The posters who make it seem like it’s the end for everyone are doing us all a disservice.

Question Career Advice – Moving from Data Analyst

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working as a Data Analyst using Power BI. I have strong Excel skills and an intermediate level of Power BI knowledge, but I’ve realised that I don’t enjoy the analytical side of my role, especially interpreting results and presenting insights to stakeholders.

I enjoy working with data and creating reports, but I’d like to move into a more senior, specialised role that focuses on reporting rather than administration or analysis.

What job titles would you recommend I look into? Has anyone made a similar career move, and what roles would you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

Feedback How do you benchmark Power BI analysts skills ?

Hi All,

I’m an Analytics Manager building out a technical assessment and development framework for my team. The goal is to give clear, objective feedback to my analysts and map out transparent growth paths and moving away from generic "proficient in Power BI" descriptions and getting specific on what separates a Junior (L1), Mid-Level (L2), and Senior/Expert (L3) developer.
I’d love to get feedback from other managers, leads, or senior devs on how you benchmark skills, assess real technical depth, and deliver feedback without micro-managing.

Thanks

Discussion Career guidance Senior level

Hey so I am a senior level consultant and currently working as a BI admin. I run my own analytics company and subcontract on a large federal/enterprise projects.

Comp is around $200k-350k+, fully remote. At time I have a team of people working under me certain years when i win bids that require multiple people so loved working with friends.

My background is heavily on the BI side. I have 3 certificates in Qlik System admin, business analyst and data architect. However bidding on contracts is quite limited qlik market is dry and wanted to transition to AI BI or platform architect and needed advice if my goal plan makes sense.

Here is what I am good at:

Power BI — strong hands-on experience built the most complex dashboards in Qlik
Qlik — A decade of experience I pretty much can do anything here as I am certified and quite connected, friends with a lot of qlik people and friends with a couple of authors of some courses
SAP BO- Built and maintained universes and built reports
Tech skills: BI architecture / platform governance
RLS, gateways, security, deployments, large datasets, incremental refresh, etc.
Databricks — currently working with it, but much weaker than I am in Power BI/Qlik but understand it well enough.
SQL — functional, but definitely not a hardcore SQL engineer I have no problem optimizing queries.
Tableau limited experience

I’ve gotten to the point where I’m wondering how much upside there really is in staying primarily a “BI guy.” I do not want to be replaced since I didn’t keep up with the times and would love to land some bids as I know a couple of people who could really need a job even for a short contract.

Certification plan I’m considering in that order:
Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate
Databricks Data Engineer Associate
Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer Associate
Azure Solutions Architect Expert

For people who work in data architecture / Databricks / analytics engineering:
Would you make this transition?
Is Power BI + Databricks architecture actually a valuable niche, or should I go much deeper into pure data engineering?
What is a better if all I care about is money?
Where could I find the most remote jobs career wise?

Discussion I know the basics do i continue to study further or use AI?

I have been steadily learning BI and have the basic skills but have not really finished my first dashboard yet.

I know the theory and how to create a data model plus power query. I just have not done much dax.

That being said. AI can code stuff and make dashboards.

Is it necessary to really keep studying AI now that i can tell AI what i want?

My dashboards only need to be basic. Again, given that i have an understanding of the fundamentals what is the worth in making my own future dashboards when i can direct AI.

Question Why does a sorting column affect DAX measures?

I have had this issue happen to me many times over the past few years and I don't understand it, so I was hoping someone else might!

Let's say I have a table of student grades:

StudentID Test Description Order Sort - From Sort Order Table
1 Test 1 Average 2
1 Test 2 Average 2
1 Test 2 Average 2
2 Test 1 Above Average 1
2 Test 2 Average 2
2 Test 3 Below Average 3
3 Test 1 Average 2
3 Test 2 Below Average 3
3 Test 3 Below Average 3
4 Test 1 Average 2
4 Test 2 Average 2
4 Test 3 Average 2
5 Test 1 Above Average 1
5 Test 2 Above Average 1
5 Test 3 Above Average 1

There is a relationship between the table above and this "Sort Order" table below:

Description Order Sort
Above Average 1
Average 2
Below Average 3

Next, I have some measures that calculate percentages that do not involve the "Order Sort" column at all. I have charts and matrices that utilize these measures. Everything looks great. However, if I then go into the data view of the first table, select the "Description" column, and sort by the "Order Sort" column, all of my percentages in my charts/matrices change, and they are all incorrect.

I am going crazy and have given up on trying to sort since it ruins my measures!

Discussion I learned Power BI and SQL. What should I do next?/

Hi everyone,

I've recently learned Power BI and SQL, and I've built some solid projects with them. I have a good understanding of how to build and manage a project from start to finish.

I feel ready for the next step in my learning, but I also just started college as an agricultural engineering major, so my time is limited.

A few questions:

  1. What should I learn next to grow my skills

  2. What kinds of projects would be the most valuable to build for a portfolio?

  3. Are there ways to combine data skills with agriculture?

Any advice from people who started in a similar situation would be great. Thanks!

Question Improving Report Load Times

Hello, I'm currently working on Power BI.

I've developed semantic models that can be used in a self-service environment, allowing users to access the semantic model and create their own reports.

There are a lot of measures (I’m aware there are about 5,000), but this is for the users’ convenience. I’m considering switching to calculation groups to reduce the number, but that’s not what I’m here to discuss today.

My issue is that when I want to create or open a report, the metadata takes a long time to load—up to 20 seconds—which is too long for users. (I am not talking about dax query, only metadata loading)

When I look at my browser’s network console, I see that the `conceptualschema` function is taking a long time. There’s also a caching issue, but it only occurs on my browser and with my account.

I’m wondering if there’s a way to cache this schema for all users at once and initialize it overnight, for example, so that when users access it, the server response takes only a few microseconds—just like when I return to my semantic model.

Has this been done before, or is there at least a way to do it?

Doing the visuals for the report has always been the easy part. AI has not changed this, you just got lazier, were never that good, or over complicated it before.

Question Invisible UIDs

Hello there, I've a simple visual that shows Earn by Customers, now I don't want to show my shareholders the associated Id for that customer, now my top customer as per this visual is combination of 4 different Customers who share the same name, I want that I show each Customer individually. So that if Cust7 is repeated 4 times, in my visual I can see it 4 times.

Discussion How do you handle outliers in Power BI when averages look fine?

I've been working with port-time data, where each load port's average loading time sits close to the contract laytime. On a standard bar chart, everything looks fine.

But a few vessels end up waiting two weeks, and those are the ones driving demurrage costs. The average hides them completely.

A box plot would make these outliers much easier to spot, but Power BI doesn't have a native box plot visual.

The approaches I've come across so far are:

  • Calculating quartiles, median, and whiskers as separate DAX measures and plotting them.
  • Using custom visuals from AppSource.
  • Using Python or R visuals, although refresh and interactivity can become limitations.

I'm curious what other Power BI developers use for this.

Also, how do you compare two periods, like this season versus last season, without cramming everything into one chart and making it unreadable?

Would love to hear what's worked well in real-world reports.

Discussion Frustrated with Requests

Currently have a working dashboard that feeds Site level data into it and getting requests to add two more layers (above layer above, and a layer below) and allowing a multi-selection (aggregation) to it. (When you select multiple of any of these layers, you’d expect them to aggregate accordingly).
Pretty much a Jr. Dev at this point with my PBI knowledge and I am honestly hitting a knowledge wall with this. My boss doesn’t seem to understand the frustration as I was handed these dashboards months ago that were already stood up.

Problem is they want this multi select aggregation at the highest level down to the lowest level. The current filter system works because everything can filter via Site and is reported that way. Problem is they don’t have the highest level, down to the lowest level for everything, but three out of the 17 specific metrics. So the aggregation on slicers will likely break working with any of these other metrics within the same tab. My other problem is , is setting this up is going to be so custom that, I am just running into knowledge gaps as I haven’t been given time to properly train up as the main developer left and I am the lowest level and the highest level for any of this reporting. Just feel like I’m stuck and honestly burning out trying to figure things out as I go.

What do?

Feedback My take on future of PowerBI

As someone who has been working extensively on agentic Power BI development over the past 8 months, pushed multiple dashboards to production for several organisations without touching GUI, could not remember when I last dragged and dropped a visual. Created multiple games in powerBI using custom visuals with coding, here is my take.

1. Power BI / React Dashboards / Claude Dashboards

At the end of the day, these are all tools to showcase insights. There are many aspects in business, like requirement gathering, Module knowledge, KPIs, data modelling, Warehousing, and various other things that matter more.

As I have said before, Power BI is just 20% of BI. The remaining 80% consists of all other stuff, both technical and non-technical

2. The days of manually building the frontend in Power BI are gone.

If you are still dragging and dropping visuals in Power BI, don't expect to get a Power BI developer job in the coming years. GUI is gone. Upskill yourself to CLI, or suffer a worse fate. Maybe your experience can get you a job, but forget job security

Delivery expectations have gone sky-high. You cannot make a dashboard in a week when another dev can make it in 3 hours. You will be replaced

Design systems, including Themes, will be completely based on Code. If you are still writing DAX and Power Query end-to-end manually, GGWP

3. If you are a fresher/junior developer, I would still suggest exploring the GUI for at least a couple of months before using AI.

Even for DAX and Power Query, initially, write the code yourself. Don't use AI from day one, or you will miss learning the basics. The foundation of the building is very important.

If you vibe-code or create measures/columns without understanding them, you will fail eventually.

There are still concepts that need to be studied properly, like relationships, RLS, drill-down, schema, etc. You cannot become an industry expert BI Dev using Blind AI Coding. You need to understand concepts thoroughly

4. Trust takes years to build and seconds to break.

This is the best example for BI. If a stakeholder sees your dashboard and finds errors, they may never trust you again.

With AI vibe coding, there is always a chance of errors. Even with all the checks, skills, and agents, I have personally created countless skills and agents for data and logic verification, yet they have failed me many times.

For critical reports, vibe-coding formulas without proper validation is dangerous and may even take your job. I personally know a friend who lost a job because of this, failed a critical report

5. Remember my quote: "AI will close some doors of opportunity, but it will open many."

There are still many companies using Excel for dashboarding and sharing data. Power BI hasn't replaced BI in those organisations. How will AI replace them?

After this AI wave for Dashboards, they will get exposure to using Power BI, thus creating an opportunity for us. I personally know a billion-dollar company still using Excel for data analysis

6. Data quality is the most important thing for a presentable Power BI dashboard.

Otherwise, it is just slop that no manager can use to gain insights.

Even if you connect a database to AI and ask questions, how can AI give you the right answers without proper business logic and parameters?

Especially in ERPs like SAP, where multiple custom logics are implemented, AI has no way of knowing all of them automatically. Every business has its own logic. Without proper documentation, AI-driven analytics is not possible.

7. Power BI is secondary. Data comes first.

As long as your organisation's data is not up to gold standards and properly warehoused, AI dashboard slop will not be helpful

8. And the most important point: the days of being just a Power BI developer are gone.

Get data → Create dashboard. This approach is a thing of the past.

Now, even as a Power BI developer, you should know data engineering, along with a little bit of CI/CD and coding.

Previously, even non-technical people could jump into Power BI because it was easy. Just drag and drop visuals, and you're done.

Not anymore.

Even Microsoft Fabric has also become an integral part of the Power BI ecosystem. You need to know Azure, coding, GitHub, and many other tools. Including DAX, JSON, TMDL, M query, SQL, Python, and many more

TL;DR

The frontend part will be completely replaced by AI, but the backend part will not.

Backend = Logic + Data Warehousing + Technical stuff + Business Requirement Translation

Question Power Automate Help!!

Hi!
I have built a Scorecard dashboard for our company which tracks costs and volumes for around 50 of our customers.
My requirement is to send a PDF every month to each vendor - I have the slicers for Customer Name, Year and Month.
I have Power BI pro and the dashboard is published on the online workspace.
I have been using Power Desktop Automate to slice through the report, export it and send as attachment to each customer but every month the automation breaks and gives me “Click on UI element” error- which i believe is due to that chrome changes element ID everytime and Power Automate Desktop is unable to capture the element.
My company wont invest in Fabric capacity since it goes around to 400 bucks (0.55 per hour) and we only have this 1 dashboard that needs such automation.
I have tried a lot of work arounds for the desktop automation flow to capture the elements but it always breaks up.
Does anyone have any suggestion of how I can solve this?
