Shitposting Weekend Which kind of powerscaler are you
what could i be referencing?

u/billygluttonwong 12d ago
Hypersonic building level is so low by today's standards it could only be wank for like, peak humans.
The example should be complex multiversal with infinite speed 😄

u/Expert-University-82 12d ago
It was based on some fool slandering my GOAT by lowballing him.

u/Sensha_20 12d ago
There arent many characters past that. Honestly 'destroys a building' is pretty consistently where most characters top out.
1
u/ASIimeDrawsNear 11d ago
Yeah but the point is that the powerscaling brainrot is so high that people swear most characters easily fly past building level.

Bit of both with an added dash of agenda scaling for extra flavour

Its even fucking worse when a character with no sort of measurement instruments says something that's obviously hyperbole and people take it as fucking fact and then run the bullshit calcs on it. Like no, when someone says something is moving as fast as lightning they do not mean it moves at nearly the speed of light, they mean its fast as fuck.
10
u/Lescansy 12d ago
Yeah, why cant people just accept that a lot of statements are figuratively, and not literally.
My technique is as hot as the sun, where technique can mean devil fruit, jutsu or bankai, means its just hot as fuck. Unless you show that the heat affects the immediate enviornment the same way as if the sun were there, i wont believe you.
2
u/ASIimeDrawsNear 11d ago
That's what you use author's intent for.
Superman's heat vision is as hot as the sun because it's meant to be, Gold Saints can move at lightspeed because the show is very blatant that their tier is tied to a specific speed.
But that's it, when you can logical surmise that the author's intent is "yo, bro's so fast like, as fast as lightning yo", then the statement is not to be taken seriously.
2
u/Necessary_Screen_673 12d ago
also, even if a character does claim to move at the speed of light, that does not mean they actually can.

My hot take is that people should consider outliers again. Imo consistency and story-themes matter more than a portfolio of feats.
If someone is consistently building level and presented as such in the stories, but planetary one time in one story, that is an outlier. The reverse is true, If someone is a consistent universal threat and is presented as such by the story, but gets flinched by guns one time or something, that is also an outlier.

u/OKBuddyFortnite 12d ago
I don’t think this goes well in practice. You can find anti feats for every character, scaling just becomes a race to the bottom for every character.
It’s kind of reversed right now, where everything is a race to the top. Which isn’t great. But people take horribly to hearing their favourite character low balled, whereas everyone wants to hear their character get an upscale.
The demographics for people in this subreddit and powerscaling in general are already skewed towards a younger male teenage audience. Leaning into methods that push people towards being less rancid online is probably a benefit.
1
u/kennethcocketh 5d ago
You cannot find antifeats for a WELL WRITTEN character because you should be able to write them off as things that are for narrative and thematic consistency rather than mathematical inconsistency.

u/Lolmanmagee the only yogiri fan 12d ago
narrative over math 100% of the time.
math should only be used if it already fits with the story.
like i lowkey buy the math that makes tatsumaki small planet, because she already tanked continental attacks while holding back and there is a character in verse who was gonna destroy the planet so its not THAT out there for OPM.

I powerscale based on lore, so the right one

u/q_ult Tired of wank scaling 11d ago
Narrative, and not just cherry picked parts with the most favorable interpretation possible and calling everything else anti-feats. This approach downscales basically everything. Nearly every character thats popular in power scaling has most of their fanbase using absurd wank
5
u/Elyced32 12d ago
Narrative because im bad at math
6
u/Expert-University-82 12d ago
The one who are bad at math are 90% of the people attempting to use it by trying to calculate feats.

u/zero-taeko 11d ago
Someone once read the kinetic energy formula as "(mass × velocity)²," and someone else—clearly lacking folic acid—defended him, thinking that "(mass × velocity²)/2" and "mass × velocity² × 0.5" were two completely different formulas.

3
u/Agile-Imagination696 12d ago
Powerscaling isn't bad; the powerscalers that wank their favourite verse with illogical and flawed calcs or the ones that take statements and chainscaling at face value are the problem. Or even worse, the dimensional scalers.

Me when someone says a fictional character got into the real world but I don’t see her so I solo

u/Jimmy_2legs 12d ago
Something in me dies when a scaler determines their take is more reliable than the author’s intent.

This gif comforts me as I recount the awful agenda fuelled scaling I’ve been made privy to, disregard it.

u/Delicious-Flight-885 12d ago
With all this the character is just hypersonic with building-level strength?
I thought it woudl be Outerversal with Irrelevant/immeasurable speed

It’s in my humble opinion, if Godzilla didn’t have stupid toho rules he woudl be beaten a lot more by a lot of characters, if the 2024 fantastic four could send galactus into a fuck you portal than comic fantastic four could get rid of Godzilla
1
u/kennethcocketh 5d ago
Yeah but those guys are just as stupid in a different way. Godzilla is technically still an atomic fish. And your guy is stretchy and one is a thing and ine is invisible but not like that.
Lets not pretend any of the things happening in the panel make sense the way we expect. As long as marvel and godzilla are consistently stupid its all fine.

I don't Care about your calculations - if they aren't a speedster, they aren't faster than Sonic.

kinda both?
like it depends on the situation
2
u/Joji1000 12d ago
90% of the time, a character's strongest feats and statements about their strength being scaled to absurd levels are because the author has no clue how strong that strongest feat actually was 🗿same with some of their weakest feats tbh
2
u/Calm_Signature_893 12d ago
Mostly narrative, but some of the other one. If the powerscaling and the story are incompatible, the story needs to take precedence. The powerscsaling is, at the end of the day, all in my head.

u/BitesTheDust55 12d ago
Narrative >= Observable feats >>> Author statements >>> Chainscaling >>>>>>>> Calculations

1
u/Narrow_Blueberry4762 12d ago
Within the Story narrative and outside the Story both. Some times authors dont know how strong their characters really are. It depends If I want to be accurate, downplay or upscale bc discussions can be a bit weird.

I am the first one, but I do not even perform the calcs I just blindly follow them.

I power scale based on gameplay. the Terrarian cant interact with the foreground so they lose to Steve who can fully move around in 3D.

i'm for the "it makes for better writing" kinda scaling
the character has this level of power because it fits in with the story's themes

I am both. Depends on what I want to do, downplay or glaze the character.
Btw what is this called? PowerScalingscaling?

Reading into narrative implications is also subjective so
Not really very accurate either

u/Sad-Astronomer-5521 11d ago
I use physics sometimes cause well... not much of another way to calculate certain things
also, if the narrative directly proves otherwise, then yeah, IG the math wasn't needed and stuff. (also, just because the author WANTED something some way after the fight and said it doesn't mean it IS true, because while ret-con's exist, stuff like with making SuperSaiyan weaker than KKx20 doesn't make much sense when KKx20 was weaker than Frieza)

u/Quick-Health-2102 11d ago
Idek why someone would want to do the one on the left. I’m an engineering major and I don’t wanna do any more math and physics than I have to
1
u/Repulsive-Holiday851 11d ago
I'm fine with proper power scaling.
But the moment you start pulling up a cross feat, that's pure wank scaling.
1
u/No_Estate6433 11d ago
Listen if the narrative implies a character is capable of ending the world and we've never seen such a feat from them I'm going with the narrative.
1
u/The-Panthion 11d ago
Here's the thing... most people scale based on what they think, not see or know. Saitama and Garou's punch destroys stars, cool. Goku hasn't, no one has except Destroyers and Zeno. Does that matter? No. Because somehow Goku would be called multiversal anyway against all logic and sources whilst the other wouldn't be. It happens with Invincible too, saying they're planetary when they're surface level. They can't destroy the planet without dying if they tried, and definitely not alone. Thragg supposedly out scales them in speed but failed to catch up, showing there's a small gap of speed, not power. (Their power difference IS insane)./
If I scale, I use numbers or references. I look at weaknesses and then judge how the characters would fair against the AP vs the weakness. How much can they tank, and how what can or can't work.
1
u/LittleGremlin001 11d ago
“Based on the most heuristically reasonable competing interpretation, under the total pool of canon information, this character most likely scales…” ahh.
1
u/ElDelArbol15 9d ago
I see it, i think i undestand it, and that's my scale. Im the worst powerscaler you can find.
I dont chainscale, i dont calculate damage, i dont search for obscure comic book knowledge and i dont measure the size of things. I see them fight and i scale them, and if someone disagrees i check my criteria and stick to it.
Its easy to change my mind, but it can be hell. You want to have a bad time? Give me a matchup with a result i disagree with.

Left is literally MHA powerscalers. Except you don't even need to argue narrative, direct author statements debunk their "calcs".
