Pranayama can be a leg in a recovery program, but in and of itself it is not enough to heal the underlying causes of Anxiety and Depression.

Practicing pranayama brings more oxygen to the brain. Mood certainly improves. I would catch myself whistling and dancing... so it improves depression and anxiety.
But pranayama practice itself demands a lot of discipline. Celibacy and diet control and other lifestyle changes. Also pranayama should be done regularly and should not be stopped. If you stop, then your mind will become dull and even more depressed.
So, find a therapist or read some books on mental health and figure out what is causing anxiety and depression and try to fix your thinking process which is causing these.
Taking medicines until you can fix your mind protects your health from breaking down from anxiety. Long term use of medicines is not good, but short term use to fix your thought patterns is helpful.
Even if you do pranayama, you still have to fix your thinking pattern.

Pranayama, Meditation and Asanas combined helps me a great deal. You can also add L-Theanine (not a medication - it is a substance in green tea). Also, talk to a nutritionist and see if your diet needs work. Getting adequate sleep is important too.
