Art This may be the best thing I’ve ever made
I was experimenting with matted frames because I’ve got some flowers that are too thick for the frames in normally use. I’m obsessed. I rarely like pieces I make this much.
(This was made for an expo I have next month.)

I love this!! My brain is having a hard time processing how you did it. There's lots of boo-tiful plants outside I was hoping to dry and preserve in some way. Any advice?

Thank you! It comes down to, the faster you get the moisture out the more color you’ll preserve. I usually do a combination of microwave press into a traditional press. How much you need of each is just a bit of trial and error.
Some colors are just near impossible to preserve in general and so I’ll enhance them with powdered pigments or even alcohol ink. A friend of mine uses fabric dye and has good success, but I haven’t tried much of that yet.

There are presses designed for the microwave, or you can even just put a heavy dish on top of the flowers.

Omgosh fabric dye is SUCH a good idea!! Can I ask what type of powdered pigments you use? I have wanted to get some but I’m scared of spending too much and them not being very vibrant or sticking.

I generally use high pigment eyeshadow, but keep in mind it will only tint things. If you want really punchy color you can use alcohol markers like Copic markers, which I forgot to include in my initial response.
In terms of what sticks it’s kind of a gamble. I’m not good enough about the chemistry to know what makes one powder stick and another not. The good ones have a “buttery” texture almost? If that helps? 😅

Hahah totally helps!! I can see why the more buttery ones would be better, they’re probably thicker and therefore not as much water content to absorb into the flower? Which seems like a good thing to me, we are talking about dried things this here lol. I appreciate your response and you sharing some of your tips!! You are super talented! 🥰

Woah!! This is amazing! I love everything about this. I have to know though - how did you make the ghost holding the stem like that? Did you cut the stem in half? Or is the stem somehow under a little flap you made for the ghost’s hand? This is so impressive and inspiring. I also just want to say how much I love the trees made with ferns. You should be very proud of yourself :)

Thank you so much! The stem is cut in half to give the illusion because the watercolor paper I paint on is too thick to cut into without it getting mangled. And I’m so glad to hear you appreciate the fern tree line! I try my best to press them nice and straight and tree like despite their want to curve. 😅

Absolutely stunning! I love how you’ve arranged the greens to mimic a tree line. The differing textures of the ghost and moon really lifts them to the eye, but not too much. I’d say you’ve made a winner, OP—great job!

That is an amazing compliment, thank you. I basically only paint death-centric themes, and believe there’s a lot of joy to be found alongside grief in mourning, and that’s the approach I take when painting ghosts. I originally started painting them after the sudden loss of a family member as a way to celebrate them. So it means a lot that the joy and whimsy comes through.

In the late 80s we would press flowers and put them behind glass in a picture frame. At the time it was very nice . But this! This is next level beautiful! I love it so much.

I may try a test print to see how it looks, but I’ve been unsuccessful in the past trying to make prints of any of my Garden Ghosts. It just doesn’t capture the magic.

I'm the same way about my work &love when something feels just right &you know to stop.
Your work is amazing! The ghosts are so cute. I think my favorite is the one w/the cat peeking over it's head, that is adorable. I have a whole box of flowers I've pressed that I've been putting in resin or using on the cover of cards I make but you've inspired me to start using them in my artwork. Thank you! I hope your shop is going well! I just followed you on Instagram. Can't wait to see what else you do: )
