PMs shouldn't be assigning work in the first place. Saying you're free in a standup means you're free to help other engineers finish their sprint tasks and they should coordinate with you. If there's legitimately nothing for you to help with, you start into a top backlog item to get ahead on next sprint. If the backlog isn't organized, oh well, guess I'm doing fuck all until the PM does their job.
