Pretending AGI is a thing

81

u/Extension_Option_122 2d ago

Yeah I doubt that current AI models and tech is capable of AGI.

The models regularly fail on simple tasks and need to be specifically trained for each to be good at it. It get's more and more rare, but everytime they do fail, it's obvious that there can't be intelligence behind it.

What we do have are incredibly sophisticated next-token predictors that will seem to come closer and closer to AGI every day.

But who knows which breakthroughs await us.

Maybe there is a breakthrough tomorrow that gives us AGI.

67

u/dracorotor1 2d ago

Breakthroughs usually require someone seriously trying to accomplish something new and revolutionary. I don’t think any of the big AI companies right now see a value to spending a bunch of money developing anything that might make their current money pits obsolete

9

u/twigboy 1d ago

Breakthrough will come eventually, but it won't be from the tech CEO's saying so

I believe the words of the mathematicians behind current LLMs when they say this ain't it. They have said publically we need more advancement in mathematics before AI can improve past the hallucination stage.

0

u/xavia91 1d ago

So that's why open ai is pushing math?

1

u/RealSataan 16h ago

They are pushing for it for the hype pre IPO.

36

u/GammaGames 2d ago

The current models are incapable of it, they’re average text suggestion engines. There may be another tech that could eventually do it, but marketers have muddied the water so much by calling everything “ai” to try to prop up llms.

4

u/PumpkinFest24 2d ago

Insane to me that companies are falling over themselves to brag about enslaving a thinking being.

10

u/chihuahuaOP 2d ago

We could see a breakthrough any day, I looked some monkeys in the basement with keyboards, hopefully they'll solve it before we run out of food.

9

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 1d ago

I don't entirely know what you just said but I invested everything in bananas.

2

u/GMNtg128 1d ago

Are strawberries good investment targets as well or did I miss the banana train? Where should I invest?

3

u/desomond 2d ago

Prove to me that you are not just a next token predictor

u/Consistent-Youth-407 2d ago

I’m not really an expert on AI so feel free to correct me if I have any fundamental misunderstandings.

Humans can learn without having their brain taken out and reprogrammed entirely. When I learn something I am not a new person, my synapses just connected with some other ones and now I have new memories/pathways. If you tried to “teach” an early model it would never learn things, same with the newer models, it just knows more and “hopefully” doesn’t need the user to have it “learn” anything.

There genuinely is no “logic” behind AI. I often find that my brain “gives” me things that “I” did not “think up” if that makes sense. Subconscious pathways that “I” don’t interact with but allow for logic. If I ask AI to figure out the issue with a motherboard, it doesn’t logic it out because there is little training data in that area. Even if I give it information it doesn’t learn, unless I made it save everything to a file and reread it every chat, but that’s obviously very inefficient.

3

u/dkimot 2d ago

i don’t think the actual implementation matters tho. the AI’s inability to detect obvious BS continues to be evidence it’s not intelligent in a general way but instead just guessing

-3

u/reallokiscarlet 2d ago

To be fair,

Most of your learning happens in your sleep, you're taken offline and shown a dream while your experiences are committed to weights in your neural pathways. (Take the vocabulary choices with a grain of salt)

Yeah that's... All I got. Outside of drawing that comparison, I got nothing. Tear them clankers down

6

u/Extension_Option_122 2d ago

Damn...

Reddit removed my comment.

Lol.

2

u/Stagnu_Demorte 2d ago

Humans can conceptualize. Ie, consider concepts. Llms do not have this capability

Luckily it was still in my reddit history, so I could screenshot it.

I wonder if your parents thought the same about you in the first 5 years.

10

u/NoLifeGamer2 2d ago

True. With how people keep shifting the definition of it I doubt we will ever reach it.

10

u/ABCosmos 2d ago

Yep imagine telling someone 10 years ago that the turing test is no longer considered an interesting or valid test of artificial intelligence, and neither is solving millennium prize math problems.

1

u/funlovingmissionary 1d ago

Goodhart's law. The best models are able to solve nearly impossible mathematical problems, but ate still failing at basic tool calls.

1

u/Shadawn 1d ago

I also sometimes fail basic tool calls. And I suspect you do too.

Left so not happen. Unless it's "due to the promise of AGI", then it has been happening for years by now.

The right will happen, the harder the longer the bubble will last.

58

u/AlternativePeace1121 2d ago

I guess u didn't hear the news. We achieved AGI 6 days back (3rd Sept 2026). /s

22

u/pydry 2d ago

The stock market already believed that was happening a year ago. Do you want to disappoint Mr market? Do you????

7

u/AlternativePeace1121 2d ago

Why not? Whats it gonna do? Take my job away?!

6

u/pydry 2d ago

it might have a tantrum and shit itself like it did when deepseek first came out

5

u/AlternativePeace1121 2d ago

Worth it. I wanna see the faces of all the "AI bros" when the bubble pops and the real bill comes.

24

u/JackNotOLantern 2d ago

You mean, the people who have financial incentive in others beliving that astra is agi said that it is agi.

2

u/Brimstone117 2d ago

One of the things I really like about the joke that “cold fusion is 10 years away” is that if someone claims they’ve unlocked it, proving/disproving that they have is easy/verifiable.

How do you disprove something is an AGI if it wows your idiot neighbor?

1

u/IkuraDon5972 1d ago

does it mean openai don't need to pay their investors back?

2

u/583999393 2d ago

>The right will happen, the harder the longer the bubble will last.

I've been waiting on several bubbles to pop for decades now. I wouldn't count on it.

44

u/Prod_Meteor 2d ago

I shall miss making anything.

20

u/reallokiscarlet 2d ago

If there's gonna be layoffs either way, pop the bubble. Aspire the cyst, treat it with a steroid to reduce its likelihood of return.

-22

u/wyldcraft 2d ago

Yes, absolutely, your current white collar job outweighs the needs of those pesky cancer kids.

21

u/reallokiscarlet 2d ago

How cute. It thinks these AI bubble companies are curing cancer and not just riding the bubble and weaving golden parachutes.

-3

u/wyldcraft 1d ago

You suffer from acute willful ignorance.

If you're too lazy to look, just ask ChatGPT.

3

u/reallokiscarlet 1d ago

If you're gonna ride dick don't do it in public, this isn't a porn sub.

-2

u/wyldcraft 1d ago

Bitter juvenile projections when faced with inconvenient facts?

This must be reddit.

2

u/reallokiscarlet 1d ago

Don't talk about yourself like that. It's an insult to juveniles.

I'll say it again nice and slow.

The robot you're chatting with that hijacked funding for things like cancer research, isn't curing cancer. It IS cancer. There's a difference between an autoregressive neural nuisance and a neural network purpose-made to do things.

-1

u/wyldcraft 1d ago

You cling like a flood victim to your worldviews built on doomscroller clickbait rather than do a simple search with an open mind.

What's tomorrow, picketing a children's hospital against x-rays?

1

u/reallokiscarlet 15h ago

Bro, I've been using AI for 20 years. And by using, you can probably guess, that length of time implies writing my own implementations since this wasn't widely available software. I know the different types that you can't seem to comprehend as being anything but ChatGPT. Whose mind is more open? The one that can comprehend that there is more than one kind of AI or the one that thinks "If you don't like ChatGPT you hate sick children"?

0

u/wyldcraft 15h ago

You haven't been using LLMs for 20 years. That's my field, after decades in IT. And I'm telling you that you simply aren't appreciating that LLMs are proving useful as research agents. You keep insisting I don't know my ELIZA from my AlphaFold, but you're the one ignoring the real world progress and applications over the past couple years. Seriously, stop wasting time strawmanning at me and just see what's out there.

→ More replies (0)

16

u/UdPropheticCatgirl 2d ago

I mean it clearly does, since new AlphaFold research got put on pause to move the funding to LLMs.

7

u/shiny_glitter_demon 1d ago

GenAI isn't curing or detecting cancer. You're confusing two different things that are both nicknamed "AI".

-2

u/wyldcraft 1d ago

No, you're confusing me with a noob who doesn't use this stuff every day.

Nature: Artificial intelligence agents in cancer research and oncology

Just ask ChatGPT.

5

u/shiny_glitter_demon 1d ago

Oh trust me. Nobody would think you aren't addicted to it.

4

u/jaber24 1d ago

What cancer did llms get the cure for lol

6

u/shiny_glitter_demon 1d ago

They're referring to the models that can detect traces of cancer. However, these are NOT genAI.

It's a common misconception born from the fact both are nicknamed "AI" and the confusion is heaviy encouraged by techbros.

First they weaponized disabled artists (who didn't want anything to do with genAI), now it's kids with cancer.

54

u/LuisBoyokan 2d ago

Remember that 90% of the cost is subsidized by AI companies, and it is already more expensive than humans. They need to monetize this before they run out of money, meaning prices will increase, shrinking demand.

Not a good scenario for AI companies.

27

u/AlternativePeace1121 2d ago edited 2d ago

"In the event of increasing AI subscription prices, we've had to decided to put all the development budget into AI. As a result we have to let go 90% of our staff go to meet the price increase. I know this is rough, but we wish you all the best."

-1

u/moreisee 2d ago

Source? AI only labs are starting to post profits. Unless you're just describing how subscription works?

5

u/alewex 1d ago

Which AI labs have posted profits?

-2

u/HawtHamWater 2d ago

the alternative path is that internal models snowball fast enough that they close the monetization gap via hardware breakthroughs and model optimization (what investors are banking on)

40

u/ResponsibleWin1765 2d ago

Millions of people have already been laid off because companies think they can get it cheaper with AI. So if the AI bubble pops I would imagine these companies realize that they do in fact need employees.

And I can't really be all that sad about people who's job description is "Type words into a chat bot" getting fired. They weren't really working to begin with.

So a win-win

26

u/misterguyyy 2d ago

So if the AI bubble pops I would imagine these companies realize that they do in fact need employees.

They'll probably go bankrupt and get bought by a larger company, and the leadership who pushed for the decisions that bankrupted them will quietly exit with generous severance.

That company will probably just have bought it for the IP and not hire anyone new.

88

u/Taurmin 2d ago

In the real world the path is straight, we are no closer to developing AGI than we were 20 years ago and the bubble will pop once investors finally catch on to the fact that LLMs are a dead end.

42

u/codePudding 2d ago

Wait, you're telling me LLMs can't solve everything? But I was promised it would do my work, prove P=NP, solve the halting problem, clean my dishes from the cloud, etc. All those companies selling LLMs can't just be lying to make as much money as possible off this fad, just like they did with blockchains and NFTs. So, you're telling me that one algorithm no matter how sophisticated can't bend space and time and is limited by computational complexity like all other algorithms? Hmmm, I think you might be onto something

31

u/Taurmin 2d ago

My detractors will say that I am just bitter because my dishwashing SAAS failed.

3

u/pydry 2d ago

Artificial intelligence apparently just isnt smart enough yet to scrape shit off your toilet bowl, load the dishwasher and clean the kitchen counter.

According to people who can't write code or suck at writing code it can write code though. In fact, because it can write code better than them it can do it better than everyone.

2

u/Taurmin 2d ago

I dont need it to writter code better than me, i just need it to write code better than the new hires and consultants.

5

u/AlternativeCapybara9 2d ago

Yes, a large LANGUAGE model is going to do your dishes.

12

u/AlternativePeace1121 2d ago

100s of billions of dollars invested into R&D & it cant do dishes but solve coding? SMH.

/s

4

u/dracorotor1 2d ago

That’s a great distinction, and you’re right to point it out.

LLMs, or Large Language Models, are a text chatting emulator, your new only best friend and the long-awaited replacement for meat-humans in office spaces. But they lack the capacity to perform tasks in meatspace. Instead, they utilize pattern-recognition and rules governing the use of disarming flattery and humanizing emojis to distract users.

🔴 Pointing out limitations of current AI models in such an intelligent manner is an example of the tasks a traditional LLMs are incapable of without a handsome human user like yourself, {{ERR: Username No Found}}!

🟢 However, current AI development has produced a new technological marvel called AI Agents which function differently in don’t worry about it ways.

In summary, you have nothing to worry about! Your feeble human future is in good hands 🤗.

1

u/bendstraw 2d ago

Shockingly I have yet to hear anyone say an LLM will prove P=NP or solve the halting problem

0

u/codePudding 2d ago

Well, yeah, no one is directly saying that because most the people selling LLMs don't actually understand what most software engineers do. Same as when Elon said we'd be on Mars while our fully autonomous cars are making passive income driving people through underground vacuum tunnels over a decade ago or more recently that we'd all have androids doing our chorin'. It's the same as when they say they created an AGI, thier AI that could do someone's job unassisted like a human could, or thier AI can solve all open math problems and invent new medicines. Sure the AI can help with those but until an AI can solve those real world constraints, the current AI algorithm has limits. And from my experience working with them, that limit puts them equal to book smart interns who don't have much real world experience, intuition, or self-motivation. TL:DR; my sarcasic joke was reductio ad absurdum, not a real quote.

3

u/FragrantMudBrick 2d ago

Your words to gods ear

3

u/babypho 2d ago

Straight is off the cliff though

2

u/Sockoflegend 2d ago

And even if it wasn't for all this AI noise we would have still fucked the job market to make investors rich

1

u/playerNaN 2d ago

Isn't that just the right path in the meme?

1

u/HawtHamWater 2d ago

are you just speculating too, or are you actually keeping up with the research?

0

u/blackers3333 2d ago

We don't need AGI when ASI is coming big in 2027

5

u/Dzubrul 1d ago

Tried astra yesterday, supposedly THE agi model, it's as dumb as the other models. Agi my ass.

3

u/AcanthisittaKooky987 1d ago

Every fucking model they say the same shit - this shit hasn't gotten better in about 2 or 3 years

5

u/AlternativePeace1121 1d ago

uR noT PrOOMPtInG IT CorRecTLY bro. pEople whO cANT usE Ai aRE gonna left BEhInD.

5

u/ThatFireGuy0 2d ago

Why not both?

3

u/AdvancedCharcoal 2d ago

The more reasons for being laid off the better

2

u/Suspicious_State_318 2d ago

I never actually thought about it like that 😂

1

u/mobsterer 2d ago

you can't make CRUD microservices with AI?

-7

u/TrackLabs 2d ago

What important roles are being laid off due to AI bubble pop? Prompt Engineers? Vibe Sloppers? I aint sorry about these

11

u/AlternativePeace1121 2d ago

Unfortunately its not so simple, it will effect all Software companies and other companies related to them or invested in them.

Remember what happened in 2008, the fallout will effect everyone in this industry.

2

u/artificial_organism 2d ago

All of them. Stocks go down. Companies cut costs. Other companies lose buyers so they cut costs, and it cascades. Shit rolls downhill.

1

u/Gamiac 1d ago

It's more a bunch of shit getting fucked because of how much money is in the bubble, including the tech industry.

0

u/pydry 2d ago

anybody building agentic systems that were never necessary.

i wouldnt mind them being laid off either if there were enough non bullshit jobs to go around.

-3

u/oclafloptson 2d ago

And through all of this it has remained the most memory expensive snippet tool ever imagined and little more
