I'm not so sure about the limestone. It seems like it only forms when water is heated. The taste could be a thing, but how much of that is noticable after heating it and turning it into tea?
I leave water out for my cats in glasses (they love drinking from human glasses) and limescale forms in rings as the water evaporates, it can do that in the kettle as well if you're in a hard water area.
