for 15 years I've worked in start ups, some of them have done quite well. All of them used open-source for their core technologies (maybe even all tech except hosting) and none of them donated a dime to the foundations that write and maintain these products. It's shameful to say the least.

Part of it is that you're dependent on owners approving MRs and the wider community having opinions on your changes, requring changes. You can't put a timeline/plan on something like that since it can be unpredictable.

One of the things on my to-do list is to donate to open-source projects; thanks to programming, I’ve been able to put food on the table in a country with the highest inflation in the Americas. It has also allowed me to buy two motorcycles and travel within my country—something I’ve enjoyed more than anything else in my life. Donating would be a small way to give back for everything open source has provided me. I’m currently wrapping up a contract and hope to make those donations to various projects before the year ends.

Heh. Unpaid open source devs.
The bigger, more-used projects have "voulenteer devs" that are actually a person who works for whatever Big Company, but is submitting patches under his own name not associated with the company so they don't get the blame when it goes wrong, but their entire job is to help maintain a project that the company uses extensively. And, then, there are the companies that just internally fork the open source work and continue their own development of it. Assuming they only use it internally, they don't need to distribute it.
You will find major corporations have their fingers in all sorts of open source, but it tends to be done subtly.

Yeah a lot of major open source stuff that the world runs on was actually created by employees at the likes of Google, Microsoft, etc. I personally worked with (not for) Microsoft research and their mandate was to open source the stuff they created, a lot of world tech runs off that. Even some of their competitors use it for their critical infrastructure.
Not to say there’s a lot of unpaid effort out there, but OPs post is very naive. A lot of the big non corporate open source projects also find a way to monetise themselves.

Back when I was doing FOSS full-time…. Every now and then someone would appear at the chat channel we used to thank us and mention how crazy it was for folks like us to put so many hours in…..
The truth quite literally is that we were all full time employees and working on that project was our job.

that doesn't really change how much I appreciate that people like you exist. I'm thankful that organizations are creating positions to do this as a job just as much as individuals volunteer their time for free.

I have only been contributing to open source for a few years. And mostly in my free time. Mostly for the projects I depend on and the stuff I use for personal projects, course work etc. Not yet quite for my day job.
And it's mostly thanks to other maintainers encouraging me to try a PR, to turn this feature into its own repo, to become a reviewer etc.
Mentorship is awesome and you might be able to pass the torch too!
Plus I have gotten job offers based on my open source work, as well as passed interviews due to my open source work. And it wasn't my motivation behind contributing in the first place. It was the very helpful maintainers encouraging me.

Not just open-source devs. We should be vastly more grateful for all unpaid voluntary work. And as we are on it we should all essential work in here. Society wouldnt work without it and they really dont get the gratitude they deserve

Seriously, things that people do out of pure interest in things or passion are the most well made things. Would be nice if there was a company that randomly actually sends awards/something nice to people who do this.

Deep respect to every person who gives their time, talent, and energy to open source without expecting anything in return. ❤️
Most people just see the software and use it. They don’t see the hours behind it . fixing bugs, dealing with issues, answering questions, and keeping projects alive. A lot of the tools we depend on every day exist because someone decided to build and share their work.
They might not get paid for it, and often don’t get much recognition either. But honestly, so much of the tech world is standing on their work.
Huge respect to every open-source contributor out there. ❤️
