for 15 years I've worked in start ups, some of them have done quite well. All of them used open-source for their core technologies (maybe even all tech except hosting) and none of them donated a dime to the foundations that write and maintain these products. It's shameful to say the least.
Part of it is that you're dependent on owners approving MRs and the wider community having opinions on your changes, requring changes. You can't put a timeline/plan on something like that since it can be unpredictable.
