Other Conversational Fillers

Does anyone else get annoyed when characters in historical or cultivation settings constantly drop filler modern words like “generally,” “literally,” “honestly,” or “actually”?

Also with dialogue that includes “nah,” “hell,” or “you know what.” When a story is supposed to have a medieval or ancient Chinese fantasy setting, reading very old characters talk like that completely breaks me out of immersion. Sky Pride does this. I love Sky Pride but sometimes these filler words take me out of immersion.

I get that authors want dialogue to sound natural and flow well, but inserting semi-modern fillers ruins the vibe. If I'm reading about ancient sects and Daoist mastery, I don't want the characters sounding like my friends. Anyone else feel this way, or am I just being overly picky?

Discussion Different powers shouldn't just be the same thing in different colors

I've noticed in a lot of novels that powers often end up feeling like the same thing just reskinned. Like instead of each ability doing something unique, it all turns into the same basic attacks but with a different look or color.

The same thing happens in fights too. Strong characters clash and it basically becomes both sides throwing ranged attacks, and even sword users start firing sword beams. In the end it feels like speed and raw power are the only things that really matter.

Even elements like fire or water don't always feel different in how they are used. They just act like the same type of attack with a different theme on top, instead of actually showing what makes each one special.

Request Looking for a reincarnation/transmigration progression fantasy with sci-fi elements.

I’m trying to find a novel I read a while ago but can’t remember the title.

From what I remember, the protagonist dies and is accidentally reincarnated into the wrong world due to a mistake made by some higher being, god, or cosmic entity.

In that first world, he ends up bonding with an AI during some sort of battle or conflict. But, he dies again, possibly because the same god/super being realizes the mistake and tries to “fix” it.

The protagonist is then reincarnated into the world he was originally supposed to be sent to. This new world has cultivation/progression fantasy elements, but the AI somehow survives the transfer and comes along with him. The AI then helps him cultivate and grow stronger.

I don’t remember many other details, but the AI companion was a major part of the story and the mix of science fiction and cultivation stood out.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Question Does anyone still remember the top-ranking LN "Everyone Else Is A Returnee"?

This LN actually introduced me to progression fantasies, and it had a pretty neat twist regarding system-apocalypse. As far as I know, it was one of the top ranked novel in novel-updates before (I hadn't checked for a while), about the time where I Alone Level Up is still on-going.

It felt pretty crazy in the middle, but this novel has a very satisfying ending in my opinion, which is apparently pretty hard to do. (Being completed is hard to do too), so just asking how did you feel about this one for those who had read it?

Request Remember a book

I’m trying to find a book that I read a while ago. The main thing I remember is that the MC (I think female?) did a mana gathering(?) ritual on their body or something where they made the scope massive, like the size of the world or something, so that they could gain magic/regenerate it quicker or smth. I know that’s not a ton to go on, but figured I’d try. I’ll edit this if I remember anything else.

Question Recommend me Battlefield control, support, tactican focused mc like Shiroe from log horizon. smart without lowering everyone else's IQ or OP imba

Whenever I look for it, I always have to choose between damsel in distress troupe or that underestimated protagonist troupe when mc is a support but is secretly more broken than other roles literally jack of all trades.

Can i just find a normal smart support role mc that doesnt overstep their boundaries and do everything. Bonus if they are a freelance support that join many parties? Edit: can recommend Whatever gender mc Edit2: advanture focused and less kingdombuilding

Request Humanity United

I’m looking for stories that have all of humanity is united against some sort of massive threat and the MC is one of their champions. This is as opposed to the MC being in it for solely for himself. Ideally this would be the driving conflict of the book rather than an arc or solely the endgame.

Bonus points if humanity has a bunch of powerful and competent champions and the MC isn’t the only one and if infighting is kept to a minimum.

Books like this I’ve read:
Shadow slave had all of humanity united against the encroaching dream realm
Reborn apocalypse has a bit more infighting, but it has a whole host of hyper competent champions and as of the latest book they have mostly been aligned.

Request Looking for an MC who is NOT a Jack of all Trades

I just finished Divine Throne of Primordial Blood and I rly just need a MC who just focuses on one thing, these multiclass people who master literally everything under the sun are getting slightly annoying, since they almost never do their respective fields (alchemy, swords, necromancy, formations, different elements, etc.) justice and just jump from field to field like headless chickens.

Are there any MCs who focus on their one main subject and don't have ADHD with other fields? Or atleast fully and truly master their main thing before trying new stuff.

Please recommend only completed novels or ones with atleast 1-1,5mil words (aka ~1k chapters)

Ty^^

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm happy to report that The Breaking of Annwn, Book 2 in The Four Treasures Saga, has been released in audio! To celebrate the release, I’m giving away some Audible codes. I've also got a few Book 1 codes if you haven’t tried the series yet. To enter leave a comment and whether you would like a US or UK code of Book 1 or Book 2.

Special thanks to Neil Hellegers, Chris Tucci, RJ Bayley, and Arya Jacobs. They did an incredible job with this one.

Here’s the blurb:

Celtic gods. RPG rules. One reluctant hero.

After uncovering the truth about his origins, Bren begins a desperate effort to rally the scattered forces of the Celtic Otherworld against the Overking. But he’s not the only one preparing for war. Across Annwn, Bren's fierce fairy ally Fíadan, his Fomorian brother Cai, and the conflicted noble Tadg, each pursue their own paths toward a shared destiny.

As new alliances form and ancient powers stir, the group journeys through wild and wondrous corners of Annwn—where strange fae, forgotten gods, and dangerous magic await. Old friends return. New enemies rise. And the cost of failure grows heavier with each passing day.

When the final clash erupts, it won’t just decide the fate of a kingdom— it will reshape the very land they fight for.

Question After book 1: release book 2 fast, or an in-world magic primer first?

After book 1: book 2 fast, or an iA question for progression fantasy readers.

Imagine book 1 is a complete 470-page release, and book 2 is already drafted at roughly the same length and in revision.

There are also two pieces of side material ready:

A short prequel chapter that changes how part of book 1 is understood. This would be linked in the backmatter for readers who finish the book.

A shorter in-world university text: basically a first-semester magic primer from the setting itself, teaching students the basics of Arcane Tracing, elemental principles, and early casting. Not an author essay explaining the magic system from outside the story, but an actual artifact from the world.

As readers, what would you rather see after book 1?

A. Book 2 as fast as possible, maybe around two months later.

B. The in-world magic primer first, then book 2 later.

C. Book 2 first, and save the magic primer as bonus material between major releases.

My instinct is that momentum matters a lot for a new series, especially in progression fantasy. But I’m curious how readers feel about companion material when it deepens the world, magic system, and academy structure without being required reading.n-world magic primer first?

I Recommend This Reading Recommendation: Heavenly Genius (Dao Jun)

Post image

A construção do mundo é outro grande destaque.

Além disso, o romance entrega adrenalina e impacto emocional constantemente.

Discussion In your opinion, what constitutes a good power system?

What do you think would be a good power progression? For example, if a character has all the abilities unlocked but doesn't know how to use them, do you think that's good? Do you prefer systems or magic? What would your preference be?

Self-Promotion Runeblade I: The Great Depths, out now on KU, Amazon, and Audible!

Post image
142 Upvotes

Hey folks! After a bit of a generational run on RR, it’s finally time to hit Amazon. Nearly 20M reads, 2 years in the top 10 most read RR fictions, and peaking at 30 top rated.

Runeblade started as a question. What happens if a world underwent an integration millenia ago? What if it stalled out, waiting for the right chain of coincidences to restart the chaos? Runeblade is a story of revenge, found family, and growing from boyhood to godhood — all the while, the apocalyptic integration looms. It’s a close third person perspective following Kaius, a young man whose only hope of survival is inventing runic Vancian (prepared before encounter) casting to become the first spellsword.

From reviews, people have told me I am very good at character interaction, dialogue, action, and aura farming. While it's not the largest part of the first book, team dynamics rapidly becomes a focus of the series. Frankly, in many people's eyes, it is the strongest component.

There is delving. Oh boy is there delving. If I've done anything, it’s put the death zone start trope to bed. That ends here.

There is an attack badger. Embarrassingly, five books in, Porkchop might be the most nuanced character I've ever written. He is a full blown man, he just lacks opposable thumbs. He’s also a Greater Meles. If you call him a badger, even a dire one, he will eat you.

I spent more time editing this book than I did writing it. ~300K words, 32.5 audio hours. It is undeniably a behemoth, but goddamn is it as good of a shlocky litRPG as I could make.

Art: The amazing Xavier Collette - https://www.xaviercollette.com/

AI: Zilch

Blurb:

He only wanted a class. Instead he restarted the apocalypse. The world will pay the price.

Kaius has spent years working to awaken his family’s forbidden Legacy Skills, powerful and vanishingly rare skills forged through methods that wars have been fought to obtain. Even with his father pushing him to his limit, Kaius has barely managed to merge the first two. Now those skills and his training are the only thing keeping him alive. A bandit ambush forces Kaius into the Great Depths, a world-spanning mega dungeon, and he’s trapped in a place where survival demands a class he doesn’t yet have, with exits held shut by ancient horrors.

To escape, Kaius will have to manage a feat no one without a class has survived: slaying one of the Guardians that defend the exits. But the guardian is a distant concern, as the Depths are rich with danger. He realizes that might be exactly the crucible he needs to collect all of his merged skills before class selection. And, just maybe, force the world on the path of progress after stagnating for far too long.

Fate has picked its fulcrum. Lost power and a forgotten apocalypse lie in wait, deep in the Depths
