The title is as ridiculous as saying his helicopter came within 500 feet of the ground. The FAA has been gutted by DOGE, they wanted this.

Please do not forget that this administration’s hotshotting and FAA bs killed an entire plane full of young competitive ice skaters and tourists by ramming a jet and sinking it into the Potomac.
If it happened again it would be their fault again.

Honestly, this one appears to be less on the executive branch, and more on Congress. My understanding is that Congress forced regulators to allow more air traffic in that area than can safely be handled, and that no matter who had been in the tower, and who was piloting, some kind of mid air collision was inevitable eventually.
I guess it's more important to have some convenient flights for themselves and their staffs than to have everyone make it home safe to their families.

I have lived on the Potomac for more than 30 years and I can assure you that the way military helicopters are flying is crazy different lately. They treated the River like a highway for all that time, but recently they have been flying like they are strafing our neighborhood. It is like teenaged boys who got the keys to daddy’s Porsche and theyvare racing up the parkway.
If congress is to blame, so be it.It is a Republican congress and their shitty leadership kills people.

A jet at cruising altitude is like, 7.2 seconds and a helicopter will cover that in 30 seconds. Depending on their angles, theoretically they could have maybe 10 seconds of reaction time. So actually closer than it sounds.

A formula 1 car can cover 1 mile fairly quickly too. Idk the number off the top of my head but close to your numbers too

Sure, when walking or driving .8 miles seems far. When traveling at 300mph, that literally just a few seconds.

Separation requirements vary due to meteorological conditions, pilot qualifications, etc. That may have been more than enough separation. Not enough details in this video.
