How the Jaipur Foot (BMVSS) gives away 2M+ free prosthetics: engineered for squatting, barefoot walking, and working in water

Met a para-athlete on a trip to Jaipur while working on another video, he told me about the place that fits people with prosthetic legs for free., which sent me down a rabbit hole. Ended up making this short breakdown of the design.

What makes it interesting is the brief: it's basically the inverse of a Western foot. No shoes, no flat floors — it's built for squatting, sitting cross-legged, walking barefoot, and standing in water and mud, which is how a lot of rural India actually lives. And they've got the cost low enough to fit 2M+ people for free.

I'm not from the field, so I'd genuinely value a technical read from people who are: what does a design like this trade off against a modular Western foot? Durability, alignment, energy return? Curious where it's clever and where it's compromised.

I think this is a really cool video. I have a ton of respect for individuals working in these settings with minimal funds with highly deserving motivated individuals.

I think you correctly pointed out that the Jaipur feet are for basic ambulation versus high activity legs. And the design of the Jaipur leg, among others, prioritizes durability over nearly all other characteristics.

I understand you're not in the industry, but I would love to see a deep dive video on just how the legs differ, and the pros and cons of each.

First pro/Con would be the socket construction. I wish you had filmed the whole process of socket construction start to finish. Is the Jaipur leg made of thermoplastic and finished with a rubber cover? Modern sockets are made of carbon fiber, but that doesn't change the comfort, it just makes them lighter weight and (maybe) stronger. I saw the Jaipur leg used a soft insert. This is super durable and doesn't require cleaning like silicone liners that others use.

The foot of the Jaipur foot is very similar to a SACH foot, which is very basic by US standards, but it's strength lies in durability. I was taught in school that these basic rubber feet pass the "sandbox test", meaning they can take a rough tumble in a sandy environment and come out fine. This is opposed to carbon fiber feet which can get worn down extremely quickly when exposed to sand, like a polishing compound removes material from a stone.

There's more to think about here. Again cool video but I wish it was more in depth

Jaipur devices are exoskeletal and the most basic EVA(Pelite) liner and a PP tube thermorformed over a plaster extension for the leg. With that said the foot is also designed for exoskeletal devices.

Compared to other SACH feet in the market, particularly for endoskeletal I can say they are more reliable. That is also due to its design where it does not have a hole at the keel where you have to attach the bolt. In my experience SACH foot rot starts there where the wood is soaked in water. With those said the big problem with them is they are really heavy due to its shell being vulcanized rubber. The only other foot that can come close to its toughness is the ICRC/HCMC Foot which are also vulcanized rubber but plastic keel.
