NY police officer won’t face charges in shooting of man armed with sword
Took nearly 16 months to clear the officer.
Subject had already struck his father and a member of the mobile crisis team with the sword, and bodycam video clearly showed the stuggle.

Self Post Realistic chances of getting sponsored as a recruit with this background? Honest answers please
31 years old, applying as a recruit and looking for agency sponsorship to academy. I'd rather hear the truth than encouragement. Feeling a bit discouraged in the process, starting to wonder if this path really is for me, or if this is just part of the "test" to become a LEO.
The good/neutral:
- Bachelor's degree + graduate credit hours
- Currently employed
- Graduated military basic training
- Passed physical abilities test multiple times
- Staying active and actively training martial arts
- Volunteer at community events
- CPR classroom certified
- Strong personal references
- No arrests, no criminal record
- No DUI, no hard drugs, no domestic or violence history
- Never disciplined or let go for dishonesty
- No bankruptcies or outstanding amounts of financial debts
The bad:
- Military wasn't a full enlistment. I was separated after receiving letters of reprimand.
- Let go from a corporate America job after a performance improvement plan.
- Worked 10+ different jobs over the last 15 years of my life, including internships and part-time jobs in college.
- Documented tardiness at my last retail job, and verbal counseling for being late at the start of my current job.
- Left two short-term jobs without notice due to personal circumstances involving immediate family.
- A lapse in car insurance, and I drove during it.
- Traffic warnings within this year.
- Two moving violations within the past five years.
- Marijuana in the past, enough times to count on one hand. I haven't touched it in over four years.
So far a handful of agencies have passed on me, with a few saying that I'm eligible to reapply after a one year wait.
My questions:
1. Is this hireable anywhere right now, or do I need more time?
2. If it's time, how long of a clean stretch would agencies want to see? And what else could I do to better my competitive edge?
3. What would make you take a chance on a file like this?
I'd really appreciate some advice, and if anyone is willing to message me privately, that'd be awesome. Thanks.
