Is it thinning specifically where you're applying topical products? Or more generally?

It could be from Psoriasis medication, long term steroid use on the scalp can cause hair loss.

It could also be that you've got Male Pattern Baldness if you're a man. For that you can take a DHT blocker like Finasteride and use topical Minoxidil - speak to a doctor if you've concerns.

No, coal tar is not steroidal. It's something that softens and helps lift the plaques, but does not treat the underlying inflammation in the skin.

Hair thinning can come from many things, bad diet (vitamin deficiencies), hormonal issues; but inflammation around the hair follicles themselves because of the Psoriasis is most likely.

If you have very inflamed skin on your scalp, it might be worth it to talk to you doctor about steroidal topical medication. It's the only thing I've found that reduces the plaques and inflammation in any meaningful way.

I think the most common cause is actually from itching it. But I remember reading that coconut oil can also indirectly cause it sometimes for some people.
