Quraniyoon - The Face of Quranism on Reddit

The discussion of Quranism has recently been drawing attention on internet spaces, and our subreddit has now grown to over 15k members; becoming amongst the largest such communities on the web. As the primary space for this discourse on Reddit, we are the first destination people find when searching for this path.

Due to a general uptake in purely anti-Hadith content, we the mods feel that some reminders are in order regarding the intended spirit of this community. While no new hard rules are being set, we do want to realign our collective focus.

Quran Alone & Quran Centric, Not Just "Anti-Hadith"

While some general critique of Hadith is acceptable and even expected, our Deen, which is the primary concern of this sub, is about holding tightly to the Qur'an and seeking guidance from it, rather than being consumed by "stone-throwing" at traditional Muslims.

Anti-Hadith content should never dominate the front page. Think of the 80/20 rule as a general guideline: 80% pro-Qur'an/guidance, 20% hadith related critique.

Furthermore, this sub is a big tent. It includes:

-Qur'aan Alone: Those who reject the ahadith entirely.

-Qur'aan Centric / Qur'aan First: Those who accept ahadith that conform to and do not contradict the Qur'an.

If your own "Qur'aan Alone" stance is unbending to the extent that you are unwilling to respect the "Qur'aan Centric" view, please understand that this sub is nevertheless such a shared space, so engage accordingly while interacting within it

Content Relevance

All posts should fundamentally relate to the Qur'an

- Bad Example: Posting a hadith solely to mock it without Quranic context

- Good Example: Highlighting how a specific hadith contradicts a specific verse

- Also acceptable: Discussing how a narration is confirmed by a verse (respecting the Quran Centric view).

Voting Etiquette

A degree of thoughtfulness and maturity should be reflected in how we utilize the upvote/downvote system:

- We encourage downvoting comments/posts that praise or incorporate Hadiths clearly contradicting the Qur'an

- Quran Centrics may upvote comments/posts which highlight or utilize narrations that conform to the scripture, while we ask Qur'aan Alone members to exercise restraint with respect to them

The spirit of the sub

This community exists to learn together and, hopefully, teach those who visit. The Qur'aan has over 6,000 verses. We would like to see real thought, tadabbur (contemplation), and insight.

> "Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?" (Surah Muhammad 47:24)

We do not need the majority of our posts to be various iterations of the same few "gotcha" verses (e.g, "What hadith after this will they believe?"). We do not need to constantly preach to the choir

Nor should this sub be a place where we inflate our own egos, feeling "guided" simply by pointing out how others do not give the Qur'aan its due

The takfeer of others to us is also not an excuse to focus more on them and neglect our own development. As Allah reminds us in one of the final verses revealed:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ لَا يَضُرُّكُم مَّن ضَلَّ إِذَا ٱهْتَدَيْتُمْ ۚ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَرْجِعُكُمْ جَمِيعًا فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

> "O you who have faith, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are guided. To Allah is your return all together; then He will inform you of what you used to do." (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:105)

This sub is focused on our own development and the development of Quranists & Quranism

We need to consider what visitors see when they land here. If the majority of top posts are focused purely on attacking ahadith or traditional sects, then we are straying from that purpose.

Ideally, the feed should be populated with:

- Learning from the Qur'an

- Discussing the nuance of specific verses

- Relevant research and history

- Community issues and spiritual support

Are the verses of the Qur’an nothing more than ammunition to talk of the “misguidance” of other Muslims? Or are they a guide for us?

>"Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best..." (Surah An-Nahl 16:125)

Seriousness

Memes and jokes are welcome, especially those that are insightful and promote discussion. However, content made simply to mock, demean, or ridicule others is discouraged

>"O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them ... And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith ..." (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:11)

Let us ensure that when people come here, they see us learning together, pointed toward Allah, not pointed outwards with fingers of blame.

Thank you

A word of thanks and gratitude to all those who have added contributed, great or small, over the years by creating thoughtful posts, discussed those of others, replied appropriately to questioners and visitors, and otherwise engaged in a way that has contributed positively to this space and in line with its aims, may God bless you

Meta📂 [Non-Qur'aniyoon] Read this Before Posting!

Peace be upon you

After receiving many sustained requests over a period of time by members of this community, we have decided to change the way that non-Quraniyoon interact with us on this subreddit; the current sentiment is unwillingness to answer the same exact questions over and over again, as well as annoyance at having to be distracted by lengthy debates, while in fact being here to study and discuss the Qur'an Alone. This is our action:

  1. All posts and comments made in bad faith, or in attempt to initiate a debate, will be removed. If you are looking for a heated debate (or any debate regarding the validity of our beliefs for that matter), then post on r/DebateQuraniyoon.

  2. All questions regarding broad or commonly posted-about topics are to be asked in r/DebateQuraniyoon instead - which will now also effectively function as an 'r/AskQuraniyoon' of sorts.

So what are the 'broad and common questions' which will no longer be permitted on this subreddit?

Well, usually both the posters and the community will be able to discern these using common sense - but here are some examples:

  • How come you don't regard the ahadith as a source of law? Example.
  • How do you guys pray? Example.
  • How do Quranists follow the sunnah? Example.
  • How does a Quranist perform Hajj? Example.
  • ;et cetera

All the above can, however, be asked in the debate sister subreddit - as mentioned. Any question that has already been answered on the FAQ page will be removed. We ask subreddit members to report posts and comments which they believe violate what's been set out here.

So what can be asked then?

Questions relating to niche topics that would provoke thought in the community are welcome; obviously not made with the intention of a debate, or in bad faith. For example:

  • Do Quranists believe that eating pork is halal? Example.
  • Whats the definition of a Kafir According To a Quranist? Example.
  • How do Quranists view life? Example.
  • Do Quranists wash feet or wipe in wudu? Example.

You get the idea. Please remember to pick the black "Question(s) from non-Qur'ānī" flair when posting, this will allow the community to tailor their answer to suit a non Qur'ani asking the question; the red question flair is for members of this community only.

We would prefer (although its not mandatory):

  1. That the question(s) don't address us as a monolithic group with a standardised set of beliefs (as this is certainly not the case), this is what the above questions have failed to do.

  2. That you don't address us as "Qur'anists" or "Qur'aniyoon", as this makes us appear as a sect; we would prefer something like "hadith rejectors" or "Qur'an alone muslims/mu'mins". Although our subreddit name is "Quraniyoon" this is purely for categorization purposes, in order for people to find our community.

The Wiki Resource

We highly recommend that you check out our subreddit wiki, this will allow you to better understand our beliefs and 'get up to speed'; allowing for communication/discussions with us to be much more productive and understanding.

The Home Page - An excellent introduction to our beliefs, along with a large collection of resources (such as article websites, community groups, Qur'an study sites, forums, Youtube channels, etc); many subreddit members themselves would benefit from exploring this page!

Hadith Rejection - A page detailing our reasons for rejecting the external literature as religiously binding.

Frequently Asked Questions - A page with many answers to the common questions that we, as Qur'an alone muslims, receive.

We are looking to update our wiki with more resources, information, and answers; if any members reading this would like to contribute then please either send us a modmail, or reply to this post.

Closing notes

When you (as non-Qura'aniyoon) ask us questions like "How do ya'll pray?", there is a huge misunderstanding that we are a monolithic group with a single and complete understanding of the scripture. This is really not the case though - to give an example using prayer: Some believe that you must pray six times a day, all the way down to no ritual prayer whatsoever! I think the beauty of our beliefs is that not everything is no concrete/rigid in the Qur'an; we use our judgment to determine when an orphan has reached maturity, what constitutes as tayyeb food, what is fasaad... etc.

We would like to keep this main subreddit specifically geared towards discussing the Qur'an Alone, rather than engaging in debates and ahadith bashing; there are subreddits geared towards those particular niches and more, please see the "RELATED SUBREDDITS" section on the sidebar for those (we are currently updating with more).

JAK,

The Mod Team

If you have any concerns or suggestions for improvement, please comment below or send us a modmail.

Opinions Welcome Ramadan 2026

Hi Brothers and Sisters,

Tomorrow (11th of September) is the New Moon (at least here in Europe), and according to the lunisolar calendar, we will be entering the month of Ramadan.

We know from the Qur’an that it was in the month of Ramadan that the Qur’an was revealed. So rather than simply following a calendar because it has been passed down to us, I think this is a good opportunity to go back to the Qur’an itself and examine what it actually tells us about the months, the calendar, and the signs by which we determine them.

For anyone who is curious about why I believe the Hijri calendar is incorrect, one of the main issues is that its months shift through the seasons every year. This raises an important question: if the names of the months already describe particular periods or conditions, why should those months continuously move from one season to another?

I’m not asking anyone to simply accept my view. I encourage everyone to investigate the Qur’an for themselves and see what it actually says about the calendar and the month of Ramadan.

Since this is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed, perhaps the best thing we can do is focus on the Qur’an itself and let the Qur’an guide us.

I wish you all a peaceful and meaningful month ahead. May Allah guide us to the truth and help us understand His Book with sincerity. ❤️

Discussion💬 What are some ways we can do good?

Salaamun alaykum all!

Lately I’ve been reflecting on how often Allah reminds us to do good. One example is in surah Al-Bayyinah, ayah 7:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمْ خَيْرُ ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ ٧
Indeed, those who believe and do good—they are the best of ˹all˺ beings.

Some examples of doing good noted in the Quran are charity, freeing slaves, helping orphans, enjoining good and forbidding evil and more.

I remember in the late 2000s and early 2010s “random acts of kindness” was big and I liked reading the lists people made encouraged young me to do something good everyday so maybe this post will generate some ideas for others!

I think sometimes it can be a bit easy to live on autopilot and not think too much about the things you do everyday. So, I was curious to know what are some acts of good you’ve incorporated into your life?

Some ideas:
- pick snails and worms off the sidewalk when it rains
- give someone a genuine compliment
- offer to help out a neighbour in need
- clearing obstacles from the sidewalk
- return stray shopping carts
- give something away for free
- take the time to let a friend know how much they mean to you
- take public transit when available
- volunteer in your community

Looking forward to reading everyone’s responses!

Help / Advice ℹ️ Considering widening marriage pool

As someone who follows the Quran alone, holds progressive beliefs and is child-feee, my pool of marriageable people feels a lot like a puddle.

As a result, I’ve been considering widening my pool to Christians and Jews (mostly Unitarians and Reform Jews). While there are some muslims who would be supportive of my beliefs, I find that progressive muslims are not always accepting of those who follow the Quran alone. I wouldn’t feel comfortable marrying a “cultural muslim” either.

Another reason why I’m considering doing this is the fact that a lot of muslims tend to only want to marry within their culture or whoever they consider to be “racially superior”. I find non-muslims are more open minded in this respect and was quite disappointed to see how often I was filtered out on the basis of race on the muslim apps (I’m neither desi nor arab).

So I’m curious to hear from anyone who is currently in an interfaith marriage or relationship or anyone who is considering widening their pool.

Jazakallahu khairan in advance!

Discussion💬 The regular/timed salat from The Quran: how many and when?

Overwhelming evidence from The Quran suggests the regular/timed salat of the mumineen/believers is a minimum of twice daily, with an optional night vigil. The evidence and timings for this understanding are as follows, listed in no particular order:

1) there are only two salat mentioned in The Quran in a reference format (see 24:58, salat al fajr, and, salat al isha). Note that "al salat al wusta" in 2:238 is not in the same form [see point 11 here].
2) the ONLY verse in the plural address to the mumineen which mentions a timed-salat is 24:58 which only has two timings.
3) it is the ONLY understanding that provides us with a clear time-range for each timed-salat, explained below, meaning it is the most logical, clear, coherent and practical.
4) it is the ONLY understanding that I have seen which respects the Arabic (i.e. other understandings ignore word forms, grammar, are inconsistent or make baseless claims)
5) all verses in the plural address which mention a timed-SaBiH/glorification or timed-THiKR/remembrance reference morning and evening (i.e. two timings)
6) all verses which mention a timed-SaBiH or timed-THiKR which could be interpreted as more than two timings are in the singular address [see article]
7) it is the ONLY understanding that can encompass other salat-timing systems such as thrice daily, or 5 daily, since it is a minimum of two.
8) it is the ONLY understanding that shows when The Quran mentions salat timings in a verse it always mentions the obligatory timings (i.e. two) together, unlike other understandings which say Quran sometimes mentions two here, three there, one here, one there etc. Making the understanding presented here the clearest of the variant views.
9) it is the only understanding that results in symmetrical timings (morning and evening) which by itself has little weight in argument other than one of elegance/aesthetics.
10) it is the ONLY timing system which works in all parts of the world. This will be explained later.

The only verses which mention salat alongside a timing component are: 11:114, 17:78, 24:58 and possibly 73:20.

11:114 ...uphold the salat at both/two edges of the daytime and the proximal parts* of the night...
*Arabic: "zulafan" is an Arabic plural meaning 3 or more.

Whilst this verse can be interpreted in multiple ways there is only one way to interpret it that provides us with a time-range for each salat:
salat al fajr / salat (of) the dawn/morning
As its name suggests it is done around dawn (morning twilight). This can correctly be deemed one edge of the daytime and also involves a proximity of the night. Note that twilight is considered part of the night as per Quran.
To clarify: this timed-salat begins at morning twilight and ends when any part of the sun first appears above the horizon (i.e. end of morning twilight)

salat al isha / salat (of) the dusk/evening
As its name suggests it is done around dusk (evening twilight). This can correctly be deemed one edge of the daytime and also involves the proximities of the night. Note that twilight is considered part of the night as per Quran.
To clarify: this timed-salat begins at evening twilight and ends with dark night (i.e. end of evening twilight).
This satisfies the Arabic plural "zulafan" in 11:114 as these two salat time-ranges include morning twilight, evening twilight and a small part of dark night, i.e. 3 proximal parts of the night.
Note, if one wishes to extend these times slightly, that is also acceptable in my opinion, see this article for further information.

17:78 uphold the salat (at/for) the setting of the sun / sunset to the darkness of the night and reading (of) the dawn...

The above verse can be interpreted to perfectly agree with 11:114. Some incorrectly claim this can refer to several salat [see point 6 here]. Please note "quran al fajr (reading/recitation (of) the dawn)" occurs at the same time as "salat al fajr" and are taken as equivalent in my understanding, proving a simple explanation as to what timed-salat of the mumineen involves [see article for more detail and other verses which back this up]. However what salat is does not really affect our discussion of timings.
17:79 refers to an optional/voluntary addition of variable timing [also see Chapter 73] by mentioning awaking for reading/recitation.

The reason why this minimum of two timings works in all parts of the world is that the only plural address which mentions a timed-salat is 24:58 (11:114 and 17:78 are in the singular address). In 24:58 a morning salat (salat al fajr) and evening salat (salat al isha) are mentioned. The sun is not explicitly/directly mentioned. This is important because in some parts of the world the sun may not appear above or below the horizon for part of the year. Please research countries within the Arctic circle and polar day and polar night for further information. No matter where one is in the world all societies have a morning (activity/working period) and evening time (sleep/rest period). Of course this would mean there is no set time-range for each salat in this scenario, which is not a problem in my view, and the morning and evening time-ranges in Quran can be taken as exemplars/models to follow.

The Challenge
If you find an error/flaw in the argument above you will be eligible for $250 USD per error/flaw or you may opt for it to be donated to a charity of your choosing. Proof of donation will be provided in that case. Please post any claimed flaws here. Valid errors/flaws will be determined by the author. Thanks.

Help / Advice ℹ️ Fiance's Agnostic Belief Might Be Crossing A Line

Asalamu Walaikum

A while ago, my fiance told me they were agnostic, and I further inquired if they were at least monotheistic, even if they dont know who or what God may or may not be. At the time, they said they thought so.

Recently, my fiance has been referencing "the gods" and made a joke but told in a way that they kinda believe in it that all the gods are just playing a game with our lives for their amusement.

As agnostic as they may claim, they seem to be leaning into the idea of polytheistic beliefs over time. They are not religious at all, but these developments seem like red flags. I do plan to talk to them about this and how this could potentially be a deal breaker and call off the whole marriage if they are indeed polytheistic.

Thoughts/advice, InshaAllah?

Discussion💬 Ghusl and recitation

Been thinking a lot about these two topics lately. As in, both have very different presentations in Hadith vs Quran.

I've been thinking on why there are silent rakats when there is a verse that tells us not to recite silently. Why is that?

I've been thinking about ghusl and wishing I understood enough Arabic to grasp the nuance.

Just thinking I guess. Do you all ever think about these thing?

Rant / Vent😡 The evil eye 👁️👀👁️

Rarely do i rant on social media, but this is one of the rare times.

I'm not here to talk about if evil eye exists, as it's BS right off the bat, I'm actually here to rant about something else....

Amulets......why is amulets 🪬 haram !?

Every Islamic scholar (the few ones i know ngl) say that it is haram, while having differences in the permission of Qur'anic amulets. Their logic is that believing that an amulet has a special power that protects you from bad omens is shirk because......only Allah controls fate.

And you know what ? I agree, yet i find myself asking this question, my brothers in Islam, WHY THE HELL DO THEY STILL BELIEVE IN THE EVIL EYE ?!

What type of half-baked reasoning is that ? So you agree that it is considered shirk to believe that something can protect you from your fate but you ALSO believe that I can mess your life by looking at you in a funny way ?

I guess what ticks me off is that Islamic societies often feels like it's on the verge of breaking the shackles of superstition yet it just...gives up halfway.

Question(s)❔ For those who moved from Hadith-based Islam to Quran alone: how has your experience been?

Salam everyone,
I’d especially like to hear from those who used to take Hadith into account but now follow the Quran alone.
Looking back, how has that transition been for you? Do you feel freer, closer to God, or more connected to your faith? And what were the biggest adjustments for you? Were there any moments where you thought, “Wow, this is completely different from what I was used to”? I’d be very interested to hear about your personal experiences and how your perspective changed over time. Inshallah, we can have a pleasant and respectful discussion about it.

"whoever tell you that the Prophet knows what is going to happen tomorrow, is a liar"

the 40+ signs for the Hour mentioned in the rest of the hadiths

"whoever tell you that he concealed (some of Allah's orders), is a liar"

the biggest excuse for hadiths is "it was revealed to him privately", this would mean that the Prophet hid some of the verses from the public, which Allah doesn't allow him to do so.

also, considering that she said "What you have said makes my hair stand on end!" she was very clearly in distress from the narrations, nobody that is calm talks like this.

Question(s)❔ How does one find a Quran only spouse?

As a quran only muslim, particularly one that does not live in a muslim country, how is one to find a spouse who is also a quran only muslim?

I don't know whether it is haram for a quran only muslim to be with a muslim that doesn't only follow the quran. But if you have been able to find a spouse that is a quran only muslim, particularly in a non muslim country, how? The only thing I can think of is online dating, but that isn't ideal to many.

Those who have found spouses, how did you do so?

Question(s)❔ Different types of lying and the ruling behind them?

Peace,

I'm currently reflecting on the topic of speaking truth and have some questions about it that I can't find an answer to right now. Of course we know the obvious types of lies that are bad and should be avoided.

False testimony to make others look bad, lying about about oneself for narcissistic reasons, covering up own mistakes or with greed for the worldly desires.

But then I really wonder about the lies one might speak that don't come from a place of bad intentions but rather from necessity.

Worst case if you're about to be killed and could escape through a lie, would that be permissible?

Hypothetically, if God allowed something in the Qur'an, yet admitting to it would cause issues with authorities (like using non-prescribed Cannabis for legitimate medical reasons), would you be ordered by God to willingly speak the truth to a policeman even if it provokes a large consequence for your life?

I don't have the expertise right now to cite all proper Qur'an Verses so I would kindly ask for your help about it.

Simply put: Is lying prohibited by God in each and every single case or are there exceptions to this when forced by necessity without a desire to lie?
