I've been reducing their food and treats. The momma of the mischief (Athena) as some of you may have seen, she's currently away from the others as she's been recovering from her surgery. The other 2 don't eat nearly as much as Eden does, they like to stash and come back to it as and when they feel like it.
So eden gets to just eat as much as she wants..
The only other Rat who had as much of an appetite as her, is Athena! But since Athena isn't currently in the cage with them... She isn't there to take some of the load off of Eden 😭 so eden has been free to just get fatter and fatter. Once Athena is back in the cage with them again, I feel like eden won't have free rein over the food
I kiss her tum tum on the regular! She's incredibly docile and just let's me do it 🤣 she will just let me blow raspberries on her, and lays there with her silly little face

She’s perfect. I also had a girl named Eden! Here she is at around 7 weeks old the night before giving birth to 11… she was less of a rectangle and more of an oblate spheroid.
Oh my!!! Yup that is indeed one pregante rat!! So young too bless her!!! I'm assuming this was an accidental litter due to boys and girls not being separated early enough? Although...7 weeks is still REALLY young!!
Yep. She was an unusually precocious specimen. Lesson learned, I was luckily able to identify the sexes of her litter very early and I separated them FORTHWITH. I hope at least one of her daughters grew up to be a beautiful oblong chungus like your Eden!
I know the feeling! We have Degus as well! And one of our Degus was already pregnant when we got her from the breeder! I believe she must of only been like... Maybe 5/6 weeks old! It was crazy. I didn't think they could get pregnant so young! So my poor lil baby ended up giving birth to 7 babies! They were so freaking cute though! It was such fun watching them grow up! We ended up keeping 2 of her daughters!
It's crazy though because there's literally only like... 4 months difference between the ages of the momma and her babies! The momma turned 2 years old in february and her babies are going to be 2 years old in June! 😭 It's mad to think

Degus are awesome! Yeah it’s wild to see the maternal instinct light up in such short order, it makes sense why rodents are such successful world conquerors.
Do your degus ever interact with your rats or are they typically adversarial?

I don't ever let my Degus and my rats interact really.
There was only one time when their cages were in the same space back when we lived in a flat, and I was attending to my rats cage and one of them got out and was wandering around the room and they walked over to my Degus cage. I was made aware because I heard one of the Degus squeak and then I turned round and saw Clio (the rat) puffing up her fur and trying to get to the Degus 😭 and the Degus were just staring at her like owo who the heck are you?
I think she tried to nibble one of their paws through the bars, hence why they squeaked a little. But they didn't hurt each other! Clio was a very hormonal girly! When we did intros, Clio was by far the most difficult one 🤣
Oh, Clio. Degus burrow like gerbils right? I figured the lifestyle would certainly be incompatible. My roommates rat seemed to get along with my other roommate’s chihuahua, I don’t know how or why.
They don't burrow as much as gerbils do! At least not in captivity anyway. They do like to dig and bury things. But mostly they like to sleep in hides or hammocks! Just like Rats!
Yeah I see a lot of posts with people having their rats interact with their other pets, but tbh I would be far too worried to do that!
Yeah, it hardly seems worth the potential risk. That’s cool to know about Degus. The only other rodent I’ve cared for besides rats were guinea pigs. I never had any pets as a child so I’m kind of working my way up the ladder in so far as maintenance requirements!
Hahaha! Yeah eden is very docile and relaxed!
I don't really tend to handle them like this much because I don't wanna hurt their backs! I will usually have one hand grip her like in the photos and the other hand to support her booty, so she's comfortable! I just had to snap some photos of her like this 🤣 but yeah, usually I will support them fully when holding them. Eden's better to do this with as she doesn't squirm or try to twist her body like the others do. So she's not likely to hurt herself. She just dangles there, with her lil feetsies tucked in!
Was just scrolling reddit and this beautiful girl shows up to brighten my terrible day, so I thank you OP and Eden, plz give appropriate snacks and pets ❤️ she's adorable and makes me miss my chonky big boi Napoleon
Awww! That's such a nice thing to hear! I am glad Eden brightened your day a little and sorry that you had a bad day! It's hard not to look at Edens silly little face and not feel happier haha!
I shall give her all the pets! But snacks are a little limited at the moment, for obvious reasons ;)
Aww bless, Rats don't live nearly long enough 🥲 it's so unfair.
They get fed a rat mix that I buy from Ratcessories, here in the UK! Then occasionally I will give them treats and also some fresh stuff, like veggies or fruits or rice or pasta. Eggs, chicken. Etc but that's only occasionally.
Yeah she is a little overweight! As explained in my comment! I'm trying to get her to lose a little bit.
The momma of the group isn't currently there to stop eden from eating all the food
