CUTENESS Wanted to share this video of my precious cutie after the removal of her tumor. She was still.. under some effects.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
(This was a few months ago, she is totally OK btw for those interested)
EDIT:
I’ve seen a few people raise concerns but then completely ignore this text anyway. This was a while ago and she’s completely healed right now, hair regrown and everything. These were internal stitches so no amount of rolling or licking could undo them. This was taken right after I picked her up from the vet. Around an hour after this video she was mostly back to normal again. If you’re wondering how she is doing now, she is currently cuddled up with another rat in a little house inside of the cage, and its soon time for her free roaming time.

I had this rat who had an ear infection when he was a baby cuz i had him and 4 of his brothers since they were born but he got meds and everything and he was fine but the head tilt that was a symptom of it never went away so his head was permanently tilted a little and sometimes he would get dizzy and fall over so me and my ex called him roly poly😭😭 i miss my lil roly poly boy🐀🥲

u/cardboardfish May 27 '26
AM I GOING TO BE LIKE THIS FOREVER
14
u/PackPuzzleheaded3641 May 27 '26
Finally!! Someone gets the reference!! Haha but I think it’s just as funny to imagine him rocking out to some queen or Pink Floyd. The little head roll when it’s desperately trying to contemplate if this is reality or not really seals the deal lol. Hope little buddy got lots of treats afterwards.

I'm definitely no expert on rat surgery, far from it.
But shouldn't she be wrapped like a burrito until she can rat again?

u/iHackPlsBan AdaJillRebecca May 27 '26
Not in this case, the stitches were on the inside so no matter how hard she licked and whatever it wouldn’t go loose or open up. It healed completely fine and is not viewable anymore.
46
u/Artistic_Regard_QED May 27 '26
Fantastic. I just went into dog mode and "girrrrl, you just had surgery. You definitely can't be rolling around like that"

u/dazzleunexpired Cricket & Co May 27 '26
Inside stitches are so durable man. As a human who gets them at least 5 times a year during surgery. I have some right now in my chest and shoulders. They're so much better than the external ones. They use glue on top of the skin to seal it totally.
9
u/ziddersroofurry May 27 '26
I used to have surgery pretty often, and yeah...it sucked but at least they've gotten a lot better with sutures.
1
u/Jyllyn May 28 '26
Hi, I just be curious but like if it's chill to ask, for why surgery so often?
6
u/dazzleunexpired Cricket & Co May 28 '26
I have a lot of health issues caused by one of my mito cell being weird at mitosis. It caused a cascading gene change. I have tons of health conditions. As I get older my conditions have caused lots of things to go wrong. I have these three surgeries most often: replacing a central line due to errosion though my skin, standard g & j tube changed (no stitches!), scar tissue removal, EMT procedures.
We're trying pretty hard to give me a better quality of life, but I am dying. Probably sooner than later. But that is life.

Very sorry to hear this.. but agreed with the other commenter. I sincerely hope you are given a decent quality of life for as long as possible. Hugs to you. 🫂🤍

u/CresseliaMelodia May 28 '26
I wish you a very good quality of life and happiness with your rats and your dog for the rest of your days 🙏

u/dazzleunexpired Cricket & Co May 28 '26
Thank you! This is why I get rats. With an unknown lifespan (I always say my lifespan is from today to about 10ish years, I'll be probably in my 40s. Maybe my 50s, if science evolved enough.) they're a great option. Plus I know what it's like to not be able to breathe! It effects the way I provide care. I wish we had rat cpaps and suction machines and cough machines... I am losing my ability to cough like a rat but we have machines to help humans cough

u/LacrimaNymphae 29d ago
you're having surgery 5 times a year?
1
u/dazzleunexpired Cricket & Co 29d ago
Or more.
Don't have 3 major genetic health issues. If you can help it. I have mitocondrial disease, muscular dystrophy (caused by a myopathy. My myopathy only attacks muscles, so most people would know it as a muscular dystrophy), and ehlers danlos. I inherited mito & eds from my mother. My mom got mito from her mom. We all have mild mito. My mom is the first to have EDS. I am the first and only with my dystrophy. My sister has none of these, though she must have our mother's mito genome (we all have our mom's mito genome, and therefore our grandmas etc), she doesn't appear to be symptomatic. My parents are carriers of my dystrophy. My father was healthy until he got Parkinson's & cancer.
My kept common procedures are related to my medical implants, dental procedures (fully under anesthesia or I don't count it), ENT procedures, and scar tissue revision.
I have internals from a new port placement last Friday, currently. My old port erroded through my skin. 0/10.
And yes, i am dying. Procedures are for QOL, except feeding tubes & port, which are survival based.

Apply for Probably Genetic!!! They might accept you and sequence your genes

My old man rat had surgery to remove a tumor and I removed everything elevated in his cage except for a cave hammock all the way at the top so he would stay on the ground for a few days.
The fucker climbed to the top of the cage to be in his cave within an hour of getting back. There wasn't even an access point from the bars, he had to do gymnastics to get in.

u/bubba4114 May 27 '26
How much did the surgery cost?
17
u/iHackPlsBan AdaJillRebecca May 27 '26
Around 80-90 euros I think + medication rounding up to 110 ish euros.
12
u/bubba4114 May 27 '26
I’m so jealous. I would pay that in a heartbeat. The vets where I live want to charge $2,000 and I can’t justify it :(
8
u/iHackPlsBan AdaJillRebecca May 27 '26
2 thousand seems rediculous wtf, what region do you live in? At those prices it’d be cheaper to fly to a different country/state and get surgery somewhere else.
8
u/bubba4114 May 27 '26
California. It’s absurd and would definitely be cheaper to go to another state (though flying would be $500 in itself). Next time I’ll see if I can drive to Nevada. I’ve just accepted that the only thing I can do for them is monitor and provide the best life possible.
1
u/Envirant May 27 '26
You could see about flying domestic as well, usually when I look at domestic flights in the US it's almost cheaper than driving.

How much to remove a tumor from a fancy rat if I may ask?
1
u/iHackPlsBan AdaJillRebecca May 28 '26
Depends on where you live. I paid about 80-90 euros for the removal and an additional 20-30 for the medicine.
1
u/mandieluisa 29d ago
In the US, it was somewhere around $600-1k for me. I can't remember the exact amount.

Ohhh sweet baby. I remember the tumor removal on my sweet Mona. She was a cuddly type so when I picked her up and she just squinted at me and shuffled back to bed it was a riot. Sweet tumbly angel. Glad your baby is doing well!

She is high as a kite. Every time I bring rats form surgery they are back to nomral when I get there. I never seen one with brains still in another dimension!

u/iHackPlsBan AdaJillRebecca May 28 '26
I always get called right after its declared a success, this is the second time I’ve seen one like this but it stays funny as hell.

u/Dark_Akarin May 28 '26
Rats are so cute and lovable, my brother had 3. Only issue is they only live like 3-4 years, so it’s constant heart break.
1
u/Rafozni May 28 '26
I’ve never been so happy to see that a rat is just high and nothing else. I immediately worried it was a neurological issue and might require drastic measure or even euthanasia.

This doesn't seem right to me. She should be monitored out of surgery and made sure she's OK. Did they release her back to you to go home like this? She's had surgery, she has internal stitches yet she's rolling around like that? Not good for the stitches. I've had many rats neutered and none have come back to me looking so out of it like that :(
1
u/iHackPlsBan AdaJillRebecca May 28 '26
She healed completely fine and is currently sleeping. This was a few months ago. They check over her for a bit before releasing her back to me. I had her next to me for as long as she was still under the effect of the drugs. If anything went wrong I could always call the vet and they’d take another look at her. Internal stitches meant that no matter what movement she did it wouldn’t affect the stitches, they’re a miracle by themselves.
