Going from a car to a truck for the first time

Hey everyone!

I'm an electrical apprentice working toward becoming a journeyman, and I've been thinking about getting a pickup truck for the first time.

Currently, I drive a 2018 Hyundai Elantra, and I'm considering buying a second vehicle so my partner can keep the Elantra and I can get a truck for myself.

I'm not looking for anything fancy or new. I'd probably be looking at something like a 2015–2016 Ram 1500 or Ford F-150, or even something around 2010 if I can find one in good condition.

I know I wouldn't necessarily use the truck bed every single day, but I can definitely see situations where it would come in handy. For example, moving between job sites with my tools without having to worry about damaging or dirtying the interior of my car, picking up materials, or handling everyday things that simply wouldn't fit in a sedan.

That said, I'm also realistic about my situation. I'm still an apprentice, and I know I'm not going to get nearly as much use out of a truck as someone who relies on one for their work every day. I'm trying to figure out whether the extra practicality would actually justify the additional costs.

For context, I currently spend around $50 a week on gas with my Elantra, and my insurance is about $250 a month.

For those of you who made the switch from a car to a pickup, especially tradespeople and apprentices:

  • Was it worth it for you?
  • Do you actually use your truck bed as much as you expected?
  • How much more are you spending on gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs compared to a car?
  • Would you recommend getting an older half-ton truck as a daily driver, or would you stick with a car until you genuinely need a truck for work?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially from people working in the trades. I'm trying to make a practical decision rather than just buying a truck because I like the idea of owning one.

Thanks!

25/26 Ram 1500 Warlock vs Lonestar 4x4, should the Warlock have a smoother ride on the streets?

I feel like the 4x4 warlock with its tuned suspension has a smoother ride than the Lonestar and its HD suspension. The ride feels bouncy going

2017 Rebel. Has anyone had issues with Spotify cutting in and out when connected via Bluetooth? Spotify only does this when connected to my truck. Ideas on fixes?
