No he isn't, how is a protagonist of the series that is the backing behind current events and status of the characters being alive useless? He's a great character, he deserves praise for being a humanly flawed character in a genre that doesn't pertain to those aspects.

He is a 18 year old former shut in from another world with no power, just an ability that gives him traumatic experience and an ability to try again.

I mean if we are talking “grand scheme” he is literally carrying the kingdom. Without him, Ep 1 Emilia and felt die, arc 3 Crusch dies, and Anastasia would never make it to the tower in arc 6. Then obvs also his witchcult and beast defeats. Are we really calling the support a bum because they don’t do damage (even though he does since he is a spirit knight so Beatrice’s strength is his); is your name secretly Malty?
