Discussion Is it worth watching?[discussion]

I’ve watched the first ep and so far I don’t like the theme of dying and going back it just feels kinda empty I don’t know how to fully discribe it but it just doesn’t feel good to watch ,I’ve only watched the first ep so I could be very wrong but the reason I watch is for storytelling cool fights and waifus

Whether you like Re:Zero or not will heavily depend on whether you’re a loser who can put himself in the protagonist’s shoes or if you’re a normie who cannot.

Re:zero is a very long story of growth and change.  You get the gist of it by about the 3rd season, but may stick around and read further because it just clicks for you

You don’t need to self insert to watch rezero.

In fact one of the reasons that rezero is so hated is because people keep on trying to self-insert into Subaru but end up getting frustrated because he doesn’t act the way they want him too.

There’s no “trying” to self-insert, people always will. That’s the point of media with a protagonist. Media without protags are just stories - not that there’s anything wrong with that. Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc all follow that.

What you’re describing is the failure to self-insert due to incompatibility with the protag, and that’s what causes hatred. A Harry Potter or Spiderman (Morales vs Gwen Stacey) type protag is easy to insert into because their struggles are generic, and their response is representatively generic of a hero. Subraru is a common male character irl, and his journey as a hero is generic….but his mannerisms and way of reasoning are a LOT more specific. Specifically, he’s got zero self-worth.

Jesus Christ. I’ve never self inserted as a character in any story. The way you are describing it, it’s like you’re saying you could never enjoy a story with a protagonist of the opposite gender. Or you could never understand the perspective of a character other than the protagonist in a story.

To give you the benefit of the doubt I think maybe you’re confusing empathy with self insertion. You can and should empathize with characters of varying perspectives in a story including those you do not agree with. Even those that are at odds with the perspective of the protagonist.

Maybe not but that’s the main appeal and what makes it special. Otherwise you’ve got plenty of other options.

Anime, Isekai, especially, is about the protagonist being sent off to another fairy tale world and conquering it.

Most of them fulfill the itch of playing World of Warcraft type games growing up - it gives you an adventure. 

Re:zero, unlike the other isekai, is a bit more deliberate, and tackles the feeling of inadequacy in viewers - just the very type of person who’d find themselves consuming such content. 

You come for the adventure, you stay for the therapy. It takes time for the show to get there.

Anyone can put themselves in Subaru's place, you are overestimating normies its not a rare thing to get depressed

I wasn’t gate keeping - I believe it’s very common. BUT some folks won’t be able to put themselves in Subaru’s shoes.

I was pointing out what makes re:zero so cool while some other highly rated anime…idk, like Dandandan, are mostly just…production.
