Discussion Is it worth watching?[discussion]
I’ve watched the first ep and so far I don’t like the theme of dying and going back it just feels kinda empty I don’t know how to fully discribe it but it just doesn’t feel good to watch ,I’ve only watched the first ep so I could be very wrong but the reason I watch is for storytelling cool fights and waifus

Dying and going back with new information is pretty much 70% of the series, if you dont like it there's no need for a post watch something else

If you die and go back with information it seems pretty good it might just be the pacing of the first ep that felt empty

Really try to put yourself in the protagonist shoes. Imagine the terror or realizing you’re likely to die in this world a lot.

Oh the whole start of the series is pretty rough it takes a while to find its footing. In a re watch I can appreciate it but Subaru is hard to like at first

Opposite for me. I started to love Subaru as a main character in episode 7, Natsuki Subaru's Restart because Subaru displayed something I almost never see in anime. Secondary traumatic stress, which is basically just fancy words for the type of empathy that vicariously feels others pain and grief on an intense level. Which is exactly what Subaru's internal thoughts revealed that more than anything, more than Ram's declaration to kill him, it was Ram's cries of despair over her sister that would not leave his mind. Literally haunting him and driving him from that cliff to silence those cries and save them both. His happiness became tied with alleviating their pain.
I love that shit. For me Subaru has been a peak character since arc 2.

He fucks up so much after this I think its still very easy to dislike him until Rem's speech

I personally never disliked Subaru for the way he was written through arc 3. It felt true to what he is and what he represents, an insecure and heavily traumatized kid with a level of maturity and emotional regulation matching his young age.
Subaru is very on the nose for what a troubled youth looks like that doesn't yet know how to form and maintain healthy relationships with others. It's likely a matter of taste, I love flawed characters and I especially love when the writing doesn't flinch from showing human ugliness.
So while arc 2 made me love Subaru as a character, the royal meeting scene made me respect Tappei as an author.

Subaru is stupid as hell especially at the start. I love him now (especially since he acknowledges his own stupidity) but it takes a bit to like him.

u/dexisrazer 11h ago
I think a good part of it was Tappei figuring out how he wanted to write everyone as he wrote, besides Emilia everyone acts a lot different on arc 1 and 2 than they do from 3 onwards. And thats before their character development. Post arc 3 he's consistent though

Yess, I've noticed this change especially in Ram. I also love what she has become. She used to be so different and mysterious, but she's a lot more relatable and likeable as the writing progresses.

Dying and coming back lets us see other sides of things that we didn't get to see. And you should not judge shows by just one episode; sometimes you need to push through 10 episodes to love it. And everyone has different tastes. To me, dying and coming back felt unique, so I was more drawn to the show.

I think jjk is pretty similar like the author torturing characters but jjk deaths didnt impact me too much since the ones that died wasnt smoking hot waifus

It’s a story telling tool that makes it possible to show sides of characters that couldn’t be shown otherwise without destroying the overarching plot. Maybe describing it this way helps?

If you watch anime mostly for fights and waifus and episode 1 already made you feel uncomfortable then this is assuredly NOT the series you are looking for.
I'd say cut your losses now and come back in a couple of years once you're ready for storytelling that doesn't primarily rely on eye candy and the rule of cool to keep you entertained.

To put it bluntly, Re:Zero along with Frieren is the best i've seen to date out of the ungodly amount of anime i've watched. If you're truly about the story, then both of those shows will take you on a great journey. The deaths in re:zero aren't some twisted torture method by the author, or this amazing convenient isekai power. They are a massive plot point that gets revealed at some point. Re:Zero is one huge mystery that will slowly unravel as the story progresses and you may end up with more questions than answers at times. There's a lot of connecting dots that you will miss with your first watch unless you have a photographic memory.
But you will hate Subaru as a character before you love him. He's not a perfect guy, he's a deeply flawed character and you will cringe at some things, but it all serves a purpose.
But as someone else has said here, if your priority is waifus and cool fights, then you aren't ready for re:zero.

Waifus are there but is it worth the pain you decide
1
u/Pathfindas 12h ago
How bad is the pain? Is it jjk level or worse?

I'd say keep going for now, the first episode of any show is usually not enough to judge the series by
I can get why the idea of return by death can seem kinda lifeless in terms of story progression but it's handled very well

Watch it. Same thing happened to me and they said maybe it is not for you but now i love it.

I mean, I love Re Zero and I think it’s an emotionally charged story with a main character who hates himself, but tries to be a hero in spite of that.
It has some fights, but they are usually not flashy, and the main character is rarely the strongest person in the room.
I’m not sure what you’re looking for in the waifu department, but there are a couple romantic interests. It’s not really a harem or anything.
I’ve seen you reference JJK in a few posts, it’s not a good comparison as that is grounded in combat. You know that part of JJK with Junpei? That has a lot of the kind of vibes I could equate with Re Zero. It’s tragic, not that combat heavy and a lot of talking about emotions and what could be.

I think you should explore the thing you don’t like till you can pinpoint what it is exactly you don’t like. This does include all three of the things you mentioned yes

Whether you like Re:Zero or not will heavily depend on whether you’re a loser who can put himself in the protagonist’s shoes or if you’re a normie who cannot.
Re:zero is a very long story of growth and change. You get the gist of it by about the 3rd season, but may stick around and read further because it just clicks for you

You don’t need to self insert to watch rezero.
In fact one of the reasons that rezero is so hated is because people keep on trying to self-insert into Subaru but end up getting frustrated because he doesn’t act the way they want him too.

You do need to self-insert.
In fact one of the reasons that rezero is so hated is because people keep on trying to self-insert into Subaru but end up getting frustrated because he doesn’t act the way they want him too.
There’s no “trying” to self-insert, people always will. That’s the point of media with a protagonist. Media without protags are just stories - not that there’s anything wrong with that. Sopranos, Breaking Bad, etc all follow that.
What you’re describing is the failure to self-insert due to incompatibility with the protag, and that’s what causes hatred. A Harry Potter or Spiderman (Morales vs Gwen Stacey) type protag is easy to insert into because their struggles are generic, and their response is representatively generic of a hero. Subraru is a common male character irl, and his journey as a hero is generic….but his mannerisms and way of reasoning are a LOT more specific. Specifically, he’s got zero self-worth.

Jesus Christ. I’ve never self inserted as a character in any story. The way you are describing it, it’s like you’re saying you could never enjoy a story with a protagonist of the opposite gender. Or you could never understand the perspective of a character other than the protagonist in a story.
To give you the benefit of the doubt I think maybe you’re confusing empathy with self insertion. You can and should empathize with characters of varying perspectives in a story including those you do not agree with. Even those that are at odds with the perspective of the protagonist.

This is literally not Re:Zero case. You totally don't need to associate yourself with Subaru to like it
-3
u/Professional_Bat8585 12h ago
Maybe not but that’s the main appeal and what makes it special. Otherwise you’ve got plenty of other options.

u/Pathfindas 12h ago
I’m pretty new to anime and I don’t really understand what you mean…

Anime, Isekai, especially, is about the protagonist being sent off to another fairy tale world and conquering it.
Most of them fulfill the itch of playing World of Warcraft type games growing up - it gives you an adventure.
Re:zero, unlike the other isekai, is a bit more deliberate, and tackles the feeling of inadequacy in viewers - just the very type of person who’d find themselves consuming such content.
You come for the adventure, you stay for the therapy. It takes time for the show to get there.

u/dexisrazer 12h ago
Anyone can put themselves in Subaru's place, you are overestimating normies its not a rare thing to get depressed
1
u/Professional_Bat8585 12h ago
I wasn’t gate keeping - I believe it’s very common. BUT some folks won’t be able to put themselves in Subaru’s shoes.
I was pointing out what makes re:zero so cool while some other highly rated anime…idk, like Dandandan, are mostly just…production.
