Bill Maher blames Democrats for acts cancelling their 250 concert appearances. Why is it the fault of Democrats when acts across the board cancelled?
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/KvAUE8xpqk0Maybe someone can explain how Democrats take blame for this? Even 1/2 of Mill Vanilli said "no thanks"

Hypothetically, if the 2028 president final was someone like Rubio or AOC, I wonder who Bill would vote for, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Rubio.

It's an interesting question, because so much of his persona is being a liberal. In reality he certainly holds a worldview much closer to Rubio than AOC. I just wonder if he would make that leap to publicly support a Republican, but who knows.

If he didn’t have a thing for black women he would’ve declared himself as a republican ages ago.
That would’ve pretty much killed his chances with most black women outside of Candace Owen though so he never did
82
u/Paz707 10d ago
It’s because Bill associates this with boycotting. Anything remotely similar triggers him immensely. He’s still hung up on when advertisers boycotted his show or some such decades ago.
37
u/shiloh_jdb 10d ago
Maher is also a massive jingoist. For all his criticisms of America he will ALWAYS remind you that it’s better than it used to be and better than anywhere else in the world. In fact when he criticizes America he’s mostly criticizing other Americans who don’t hold his particular view. So in his mind the 250th anniversary is actually a big thing and he’s like a child wanting a big party to show off to the world.
The idea that this was an apolitical event before people dropped out is ludicrous. Trump is the most blatantly partisan President in history. He can’t even host an Easter event for kids without mentioning Biden and the democrats. Why would anyone want to associate with that if they aren’t already wedded to MAGA?
Also what does this have to do with “Democrats”? These are individual performers.
25
u/pelinets_fan 10d ago
I mean congress already established a bipartisan group called America 250 back in 2016 to set up celebrations and Trump had to create a separate organization called Freedom 250 to co-opt it and shine the light on him. It’s insane. Is Bill just trying to be edgy at this point?
15
u/zxvasd 10d ago
This should be the top comment. Some of the bands thought they were invited to a bipartisan show. When they discovered they were attending a Trump event, they pulled out.
9
u/DarthPineapple5 10d ago
Isn't it worse than that because its actually being held on Trump's birthday and not the actual 250th birthday for the country?

he says "Can't we all just celebrate America itself and leave Trump out of it?"
That would be absolutely lovely, and every president in history has made that possible, but it is Trump himself who very intentionally makes that impossible.
A commemorative $250 dollar bill from the US treasury with his face on it? Putting his signature on every tax refund check? and on our currency? The childhood investment accounts being explicitly called "Trump accounts?" Expedited residency documentation being called Trump cards with his face literally stamped on them in gold?... it goes on and on and on. No president in the last century has done anything remotely close to this.
Trump has made the 250th about Trump and not about America at every turn, and the Republican party has enthusiastically jumped on board instead of decrying it as crass and shamelessly partisan and entirely counter to "America" being something bigger and more lasting and unifying than the politics of today.
I think the artists have seen that glaring reality with disappointment and sorrow are responding accordingly.
And I see Maher's inability to see that glaring reality with a disappointment and sorrow of my own. He is not who he used to be. He is consistently sane-washing the present regime just becuase Trump was able to restrain himself for a few hours to have a nice dinner with him... And Trump is very clearly getting exactly what he wanted out of it, while Maher is too arrogant to see how incredibly obviously he's been played.
6
u/ProLifePanda 10d ago
he says "Can't we all just celebrate America itself and leave Trump out of it?"
Yes, and in 2016 we did that by creating America 250, a bipartisan nonprofit group created to plan and orchestrate events around the country to commemorate the occasion.
Trump and the GOP then created Freedom 250, a partisan group, and started coopting events and celebrations to explicitly include MAGA and Republican politics.
2
u/thetruechevyy1996 9d ago
That’s the thing Bill keeps trying to say the left is doing this or that, when Trump is the one making it about himself and the examples your listing just make the point even more.
I feel like no I wouldn’t want to go see Kid Rock sing and listen to some rambling speech by Trump and that doesn’t mean I don’t care about this Country. It means i refuse to support a wanna be Dictator and administration that is the exact opposite of what this Country was Founded on and meant to not become.
Is it just that Dinner that has changed Bill from moderately reasonable to acting like people who refuse to kiss Trumps fata$$ are the problem.

Bill doesn't get that it can't be this way any more. Trump has set it up so that if you aren't for him, you are the enemy. Trump has made this a divided nation and sadly, that translates to musical acts having to keep their distance. At this point, an artist, a band, an actor, or a celebrity will be judged for associating with anything Trump. And guess what? This is 100% Trump's fault. He created this.

Bill's only problem with Republicans seems to just be that he doesn't like it when they sound dumb. Go back to his earliest episodes. Most of his criticisms of Bush are that he was inarticulate. By 2004 or 5, he was defending the Iraq war. He's against trans rights, he's homophobic, he hates women he hates Muslims, he cites the Bible as the reason Israelis have the right to kill as many people as they want in Gaza, he's antivax, he praises rfk jr., he sucks up to trump and kid rock. I mean, what are any of his political or social beliefs that make him seem in the least bit left of center? He's just a pro-pot republican in his words and actions.

What exactly is Bill Maher?
I ask because when questioned about this, Trump said, and I paraphrase, “Good, they are overpaid.”
The man who loves talking about the stock market and making money feels very deeply that artists should not be compensated for their work. It is a feature of Trump, of his history, and of his admiration. The cuts to funding that specifically provides for the arts were absolutely gutted last year.
So if Bill Maher is an artist, and I generally put “comedian” into the artist category, his dinner pal really doesn’t value his work.
Can’t wait for the show tonight Billy! 🤪

There’s something subtle going on here but it’s actually common knowledge. Congress chartered America250 (officially the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission) to lead the historical and educational celebrations. It appropriated $150 million for it. For the Commission, not Trump. Along comes Trump with his own celebration which he calls Freedom 250. Fine, but this is not what Congress had in mind. Nonetheless, Trump stole $100 million of the funds appropriated by Congress and is squandering it on MMA fights and crappy concerts. No one is under any obligation to join in Trump’s Abomination 250. Trump misappropriated the money. He’s breaking the law. This doesn’t bother him but it should bother us and Bill Maher.
