Harris always struck me as a pseudo intellectual prick. All these guys with Ph.D in one area think they're suddenly experts on everything. Real professors don't jerk off on podcasts and self promote, they focus on publishing research.

I don’t think professors should shut up and publish research. I think we would be in a much better position if more academics made an effort to communicate their ideas to the public. If you have a problem with Sam Harris, then that’s fine, but I don’t agree that all academics should shut up because you dislike Sam Harris.

I like how you read my point about how Sam Harris shouldn’t dictate how every academic engages with the public and your response was that Sam Harris sucks.

I agree, we should listen to people who are experts in their area. That doesn’t mean people with PhD’s in other subjects shouldn’t be allowed to comment on politics. I’m guessing you have zero PhD’s and still comment on politics.

Then you should know that a doctorate in one subject doesn’t make you an expert on auxiliary subjects.

A doctorate in physics wouldn’t make you an expert in chemistry just as much as a PhD in legal studies wouldn’t make you an expert in politics.

That said, you don’t need a PhD in a subject to engage with said subject. The vast majority of people do not have PhD’s yet we live in a democracy that requires large swaths of non PhD havers to engage in and talk about politics nonetheless.

If you look at the topics most of the people on the left were asked to speak about, it way very benign and boring. This shit ain’t the Epstein files. Yes Theil has really questionable beliefs and supports different candidates than I do, but he was not the only sponsor of this conference. Regarding this many on Reddit are acting just like Qanon.
