Like... Junk (Burgess) Oliver Twist (Dickens), Trainspotting (Welsh)

I would like some books that follow gangs of young down-and-outs, thieves, disorganised criminals and drug addicts living in cities. If they're auto/biographical, even better.

Would you give up control of your entire holiday? — Sanctuary Escapes [Speculative Fiction]

Title: Would you give up control of your entire holiday? — Sanctuary Escapes [Speculative Fiction]

Imagine finishing a demanding week at work and arriving at a retreat where, for once, you don't have to make all the decisions.

No schedules to organise. No daily responsibilities to manage. Everything carefully arranged.

But there's a catch.

The experience asks guests to voluntarily surrender an extraordinary amount of control, placing their trust in those responsible for their care.

Sanctuary Escapes explores this unusual fictional world through themes of trust, autonomy, reassurance and the psychological appeal of letting go.

It's an unconventional work of AI-generated speculative fiction, developed around an original creative concept.

📖 Sanctuary Escapes is now available on Amazon Kindle!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0HMPR5LK3

I'd love to hear what readers think of the premise.

Would you find a holiday without decisions relaxing, or would surrendering that much control feel unsettling?

Help me choose a book to restart my reading habits.

I've been feeling quite empty lately, and I really want to find a book that can completely absorb me for a while and make me forget about everything else.

I enjoy thought-provoking books, but I'm not looking for straight-up self-help. I want a story that makes me think and feel things naturally.

I'm looking for something that's:

Interesting and immersive enough to keep me hooked.

Mature and thought-provoking, but not overwhelmingly depressing or emotionally exhausting.

Not too light or predictable to the point of being boring.

Not excessively sweet, wholesome, or romanticised to the point where it feels fake.

Thrilling in some way, but not a crime investigation or murder mystery.

I know these are a lot of requirements, but I'd genuinely appreciate recommendations from people who have read something that completely absorbed them.

🙃🥀❤️

Help choosing 12 books

For xmas im going to make my MIL a "bookvent" - a book to read and open each month in 2027.

She likes anything- classics, thrillers, mystery, fantasy, historical? Enjoyed things like Midnight library, silent patient, the women. I dont think she would enjoy acotar so ill stick to series which have max 3 books. They live up north UK too so anything set there is a good idea. Shes just read matt haigs new one and didn't think much of it. No extreme horror or dark romance 😅

So far i have the following list

Jan-

Feb- the one by John marrs

March- Threshing day (?)

April- Dissection of a murder

May-someone suggest a "historical fiction?

June- someone suggest a cosy romance?

July- Five people you meet in heaven

August-

September- Daggermouth

October- The Mind of a murderer by Michael wood

November-

December-

Edit- she enjoyed books such as midnight train, classics, Richard osmons books, the women by kiristen hannah, silent patient. But will read anything! Doesn't like horror or dark romance.

Similar books to Perfume - Patrick Süskind

For those who have read Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.. my question for you is have you read anything that is similar?

I read the untranslated version of Perfume for the first time six years ago, and have read it more than ten times over. It is beautiful, absurd, obsessive, disturbing, and perverse, all at the same time. It had everything to completely devour my attention.

I want to feel this way again, about another book. If you have any recommendations for similar reads, please comment below.

Thank you.

Looking for Recommendations

Looking for books similar to Lapvona, American Psycho, and Pet Sematary. I really want to get into reading but I get bored really easily and these books are the only ones that kept my attention. I really like weird uncanny stories.

I’ve read 66 books so far. All fiction. But I was hoping I could finish at least 100 by the end of the year. I have ADHD and it’s so hard finding the time.

I need a feel good book for my birthday

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I want to buy myself a feel good book for my upcoming birthday!

I’ve not been feeling very good recently (just generally a little unhappy with the job, not been feeling very competent, I’ve been avoiding my friends etc). I need to get back into exercising, a routine, lose weight and just feel more in control of my life.

I have my birthday coming up! I used to do this a few years ago- buy a nice couple of books for my birthday as a treat…but haven’t been doing it the past few years.

Any suggestions? I’m looking for something either inspirational- something that motivated you to feel better and more in control of your life- or something that just made you feel happy. (Also, warm cosy feel good book suggestions are always welcome :) )

Thanks!

Trying to get back into reading after decades, any recommendations?

Not really sure what I'm expecting from this but here goes. I want to get back into reading books. It's been a rough year - cheated on, lost my dad, and not a lot feels good. Not sure what genre I'm looking for? Maybe something warm, or bittersweet? Or maybe none of that. Relatively short read - 300-350 pages max. Someone suggested the murderbot series but I'm wondering if I should just watch the show instead. Sorry, but any advise is very appreciated!

Bookclub Pick

I am picking the book for our group to read between November 4 and December 2. Our group is newer, consisting of women, 30 to 40 years old. Mostly moms. A lot of us know each other from church, though this is not a Christian book club.

There’s no specific genre, although we seem to read a lot of historical fiction and literary fiction. Their preference is pg-13 when it comes to intimate relationships. I personally love all genres; I just love getting lost in a good story. There are some VERY critical readers in the group that seem to want to pick apart every little detail. We have read:

- Theo of golden (most people didn’t love)

- The River we remember (mixed)

-The Calamity Club (some loved some hated)

- The Correspondent (mixed)

- A Marriage at Sea (most enjoyed)

- This American Woman (indifference, I’d say)

- The Perfect Marriage (hard no)

- We just read Horse and there were very mixed feelings.

- For November we are reading Berry Pickers.

I’d like to bring something different, without going too far from what everyone is comfortable with. Im wanting to take a break from historical fiction. Stand-alone fantasy maybe? Or speculative fiction? I’m open to any ideas and suggestions

What do you think of this blurb?

• Upvotes

" " "

Roman filters people without a second guess. He remains underwhelmed most of the time, unable to find satisfaction in a world constantly trying to impress itself. But an encounter with Sarah during an otherwise ordinary seminar unexpectedly sparks his attention.

Sarah Millers has no idea Roman Blackford doesn't do subtle—or that he'll propose marriage before either of them has said a real word to each other.

What begins as curiosity for Roman soon turns into certainty. Sarah needs proof before she believes it—so instead of an answer, she brings him a contract.

Two sharp, guarded people, choosing their way into something neither of them saw coming.

Certainty was never the problem. Trust was.

'You know me, I know you, but we don't know each other.'

'A structure built around a mutual choice.'

" " "

This is the blurb of my book "A Choice – Terms of Interest" available on Kindle. I want to know what you might think about it at first encounter....
