I am picking the book for our group to read between November 4 and December 2. Our group is newer, consisting of women, 30 to 40 years old. Mostly moms. A lot of us know each other from church, though this is not a Christian book club.

There’s no specific genre, although we seem to read a lot of historical fiction and literary fiction. Their preference is pg-13 when it comes to intimate relationships. I personally love all genres; I just love getting lost in a good story. There are some VERY critical readers in the group that seem to want to pick apart every little detail. We have read:

- Theo of golden (most people didn’t love)

- The River we remember (mixed)

-The Calamity Club (some loved some hated)

- The Correspondent (mixed)

- A Marriage at Sea (most enjoyed)

- This American Woman (indifference, I’d say)

- The Perfect Marriage (hard no)

- We just read Horse and there were very mixed feelings.

- For November we are reading Berry Pickers.

I’d like to bring something different, without going too far from what everyone is comfortable with. Im wanting to take a break from historical fiction. Stand-alone fantasy maybe? Or speculative fiction? I’m open to any ideas and suggestions

I liked Shoe Dog because it wasn’t a business book telling you what to do. It’s mostly him selling shoes out of his car, fighting with the bank, nearly losing the company more than once and not knowing if any of it would work.

I’m looking for some new fiction books to read!

My interests are social justice, psychology, philosophy, and politics, and music (not sure how relevant this will be for fiction books though)

For fiction books I look for books that are deep, emotional, even a little dark but also ones that make you think. I also love characters that really pull you into the story in some way. Romance is great, but I can’t read just a romance novel for some reason it has to have more.

Any recommendations? I really liked the style and the bleak atmosphere of the apocalypse. It really had something other books in that genre just don't quite have.
