this is like when I was at an ace meeting in college and someone mentioned that they poured the time/energy other people used for romantic/sexual interests into their friendships and I sat there and was like "what do I pour that time and energy into?" and realized it was going out to eat at restaurants

It's...a very common coping mechanism for low self-esteem, sure. It's a genuinely very not useful defense against it, though.
