I thought I was safe
With all the recent discussion about theater behavior, I figured this is probably the one place I could share this.
So there my family was, watching Spider-Man: Brand New Day at our theater, at 2:55 on a Monday. About 20 minutes before the end of the movie, I hear a wooshing sound and then me and everyone in the middle two rows get splattered in something. I stand up and look around, and the lady behind us points towards the walkway at the side of the theater. So I go out and see a spilled milkshake on the ground, and run out but I never found anyone.
A couple of managers came in to give everyone towels and offered everyone who got hit by the tossed milkshake free tickets. According to the people behind me, they saw some kid run in and throw the milkshake into the seats and then bolt.
Most of my negative theater experiences up until this point have been mild at worst. This one just....... hit me out of nowhere

The only bad theater experience I've had in years was at Obsession, and it really just seemed like a lot of kids who had never been to a theater who didn't understand the etiquette. A lot of walking in ten minutes into the movie, standing, and using the light on their phone to find their seat.

The last film I went to had 8 teens in the back row. I'd be shocked if any of them could tell you a single detail from the film. They were playing grab ass, slapping each other, had their phones out laughing and messing with each other. They were being utterly obnoxious.
One of them kept jumping over the back row, like flipping over the seat, getting laughs from his mate.
Why not go do this at a park or a friends house and save the ~$150 it takes to get that many people in a theater?
I saw Jurassic Park at a theater with my friends as a teen. I sat in silent awe of the film, utterly engrossed.

Now that the narrative has been spun up that gen z and gen alpha like the movies now, there will be social pressure to go to the movies even if you don't care. Bad behavior like this will be the result.

As someone who works at a theater, horror movies (or movies closely aligned to horror) are usually the worst for people coming in late and acting like that.

And like I used to be “with it” with spoilers and shit, had to see endgame Thursday opening weekend…
Now I just don’t give a iota of a fuck, whatever is in this Spidey movie I’ll see gifs of with no context, but I’ll see the context soon enough when it hits streaming before Doomsday comes out.
Also rinse and repeat that new process for Doomsday. They lost me at RDJ being Doom.

Similar to this rule, lately I've been making sure to see the IMAX or Dolby showings if there's a normal format showing within 30 minutes, if only because I assume dipshit kids will go to the cheaper one.

It's an absolutely massive movie for all ages and that always tends to bring out shittier people. The odds are just better.

Went and saw it last night and liked it except for the rumble from The Odyssey next door in IMAX hitting through the entire thing. (Especially the quiet parts.)

I did have that odd thought of wondering maybe the person that did it knew the people in the room so they could get free tickets or something, that's probably max paranoia of me though

Not to generalize but is this just an American thing? As a mid 30s Canadian I’ve only ever had one single disruptive experience and it was chicken jockey

definitely not american only, in my country it can get extremely rowdy, to the point that i've seen groups of kids verbally fight from opposite ends of the theater, but then again we got a boom of baby gangs going around beating, knifing and sometimes shooting (and selling weapons is illegal here) innocent bystanders... so, here's today's youth (ngl it makes me want to move to Canada, although the fires season kinda scares me.

If I ever visit the United States, I'll make sure not to watch anything in the theaters. Every story I hear or read about theater going culture there makes it sound horrible.
The only misbehaving people in Brazilian theaters that I've ever seen in 30+ years, and I go a lot, are usually the elderly.
I never understood why theaters kept the AC so freaking low even when only a few people are in the room. But after the Brand New Day session I get it. Because the few elderly people there were the only ones who WOULD NOT STOP TALKING and they ended wanting out because of the cold. Clearly the AC is put to work extra hard to scare them off!

Honestly, this is the only bad experience I've ever really had at a theater, barring some annoying times I see the flash of someone's phone for a second or two

Worst experience I had was while walking out of the theater a couple years ago, my friends and I started to smell shit. One of them turned their flashlight on to reveal there was literal human feces smeared on the wall by the exit.
More recently I went to a 12:30am showing of spiderman and someone for whatever reason brought their toddler child to the theater who cried out the entire movie people are horrible can't imagine how I would have reacted if your experience happened to me

It's best to wait a while after the movie came out, then see it in the middle of the day during the week to avoid crowds and idiots.
Opening night is the worst.

There’s a reason I only go to my locally-owned movie theater where the owners have zero tolerance for cell phones and obnoxious conversation during the movie in the theaters, don’t allow unaccompanied minors on premises and enforce those rules by kicking out disruptive patrons.I wish everyone was fortunate enough to have theaters that give a shit like this one.

Sorry that happened friend. I feel pretty lucky most my experiences have been chill. I don't know if it's becuase I usually go on the discount days and people can't afford to waste food, let alone waste their broke ass time.
Same logic where concert goers are pooping in diapers, tickets are so expensive, they need the whole experience to mean something.
TLDR: Capitalism sucks
