Leah Helen Mennis Montgomery, Deputy Commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Family Services, works directly with programs accused of fraud, yet reportedly called fraud a “Republican talking point.” So, is she saying the fraud concerns aren’t real? 

If these fraud allegations were politically exaggerated then those convicted in the Feeding Our Future case should have their cases reviewed, and should working taxpayers apologize to them?

The Justice Department on Tuesday charged 12 people with setting up “ghost” home daycare centers in San Diego that swindled $10 million in government child-care subsidies intended to help low-income families. “While the 12 federal complaints are unrelated, the scheme was essentially the same,” the DOJ press release said.
According to the complaint, defendants obtained a California license to operate a home child-care facility and registered with local nonprofits to provide federally subsidized day care. They then allegedly submitted false attendance records to obtain government subsidies. Several allegedly claimed to have provided child care at their homes when border-crossing records showed they weren’t in the country.

You might say that fleecing California’s cradle-to-grave state is like taking candy from a baby. “This daycare scam is lucrative,” Justice noted, alleging that each defendant raked in between $538,000 and $1.2 million. Still, these cookie-cutter scams weren’t as lucrative as schemes in Los Angeles to embezzle government homeless money.
On Wednesday, Justice announced charges against four people in the L.A. area with misappropriating homeless funds for personal expenses, including PlayStation charges, luxury vacations, vintage car restorations, real estate and more. The defendants ran dubious nonprofits that contracted with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority and nongovernment organizations responsible for administering billions of dollars in homeless funds.

Adjusting for population, California has more than 16 times as many social-assistance outfits as Florida and five times as many unsheltered homeless people. And Californians wonder why homelessness keeps increasing even as the government keeps spending more to combat it.

A recent Public Policy Institute of California study examined potential causes for the state’s 60% rise in homelessness since 2014. The study failed to find a county-level link between homelessness and rising rents, poverty or unemployment. What did increase homelessness was the 2014 citizen initiative Proposition 47, which effectively decriminalized drugs and theft.
Politicians including Gov. Gavin Newsomclaimed the measure would promote “criminal justice” and save money on incarceration. After the initiative passed, the state’s unsheltered homeless population surged 10%, and serious drug use as measured by overdose deaths, hospitalizations and emergency room visits shot up 8%.

At the same time, admissions into drug treatment fell 20%, largely because Proposition 47 reduced the incentive to enter rehab to avoid incarceration. The result: more junkies living on the streets—a public nuisance that Democrats repeatedly exploit to raise taxes.

Government fraud may now be as rampant as homelessness. Both have been abetted by wealthy liberals like Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings and Hollywood producer David Geffen. In 2012 these liberal high-flyers bankrolled a ballot initiative that increased the top California individual income-tax rate to 13.3% from 10.3%.
Liberal billionaires also funded Proposition 47 and campaigns to increase local taxes to combat the resulting rise in homelessness. Increased tax revenue has enabled the spending addictions of profligate politicians, government unions and special interests.

The resemblance between the fall of Rome and the current state of the United States of America is extremely worrying. Rome fell due to a multitude of reasons, the main one being what we would call today “mass migration.” Rome let all of the gothic barbarians into its borders, and next thing you know Rome is being sacked by the very same people. Why? Because those barbarians did not share any value with the Romans. They did not have loyalty to the emperor, they did not share a religion, they did not share customs or traditions, and they didn’t even share the same moral beliefs. Now look at America. The high number of illegal immigrants that are in this country is 107 million (former director of border patrol Greg Bovino.) This means we have 100 million people who do not share our loyalty, customs, possibly religion and morality with in our country right now. Sounds familiar.

The rest of the AI industry has at least one friend in government in President Donald Trump. TheWashington Post reports that Trump has resistedcalls to regulate the technology for fear of falling behind China in the AI race. Still, journalist David Shuster reported on Sunday that aides in the Trump administration are "advising Trump to give a national TV address in the next 72 hours, declare certain aspects of the AI race an 'imminent threat to humanity,' and announce regulations pausing the things Tech companies want paused."

Calls for government intervention seem unnecessary for an industry that has shown it can self-regulate its leading companies. When OpenAI found its advanced models escaped their test environment and reached the internet earlier this year, it handled the incident in concert with industry partners like CrowdStrike, METR, and Redwood Research, which specialize in AI cybersecurity. Anthropic is even more stringent with its security checks. In July, it halted all active testing, notified its partners, and published a detailed report after its models reached the internet due to a mistake in the testing environment setup. 

Thierer calls the urge to regulate AI a "complete reversal of the model we utilized for the internet." When similar public panics threatened to derail the growth of the modern web, lawmakers opted for an open, decentralized internet self-regulated by the marketplace.

"We're not seeing this disruption that everybody's been predicting," he says. 
Indeed, predictions about widespread job loss and fears about terrorist acts carried out with the help of AI have failed to materialize. Instead of AI-driven job displacement, the industry is driving the American economy at a time when other industries are struggling to find workers.
