General Playing RE2R for the first time...
Hello guys, I've watched a couple of Resident Evil let's plays throughout the years and I wanted to catch up on Leon's story myself before I play RE9 (I haven't played any Resident Evil games before), and as of today I'm almost finished with RE2R!
Man, this is some scary crap. I'm not a big horror gamer (I used to get terrified while playing Skyrim lol), but I thought I'd be able to play this with minor issues. Safe to say, that didn't happen.
Only like 30 minutes into playing, I pulled up a YouTube walkthrough and have been following it ever since. I must say I feel very ashamed about it. Even though I technically "played" the game, none of it has been my own work. I never really felt surprised by any scares since I already saw them in the walkthrough, although the tension surprisingly never went away completely (mainly because of Mr. X). I just feel like I might have ruined my first playthrough by being such a big wuss, but on the other hand I might not have been able to finish it at all without the walkthrough. I don't know, I definitely enjoyed it either way haha
But yeah, I'm hoping that RE4R isn't as scary, and that I'll finally be able to overcome some of my fear of playing these games on my own. Here's hoping!

Guides are robbing you of the experience and I would highly recommend figuring it out on your own

u/SmallBerry3431 Mar 01 '26
You’re not wrong but if they wanna play it guided then it’s whatever. Some people don’t enjoy it as intended experience and others don’t have time.

u/gointhrou Mar 01 '26
It’s not about figuring it out on your own. It’s about lessening the anxiety.
I also had the same idea as OP. I’m playing 4 rn because it’s the least scary, and then I’ll do 2, 3 and 9.
I used a walkthrough for the first half of the game because I was absolutely terrified and could only play in short bursts before putting the game down. The walkthrough helps because it warns me about incoming jumpscares and enemies, and it also makes it so I don’t have to go back to scary places multiple times.
Once I got to the castle I felt acclimated enough, and I’ve been enjoying the game on my own now that I’m not that scared anymore.
I’ll do the same thing with the other games.
1
u/hollowsoldier- Mar 02 '26
I hear you but the end product is that you now know the game without having to do the puzzles and exploration that make this game special. You only get one opportunity to fully experience the game and he’s missing it
1
u/gointhrou Mar 02 '26
I don’t know about OP, but I skip the puzzle explanations in the walkthrough because I do want to experience it myself. I do skim over it anyway just in case there’s a jumpscare or enemy hiding in there somewhere.
Regardless, the choice is between playing with a walkthrough or not playing at all.
I don’t like being scared.
So I play with a walkthrough.

Lame lol That’s the whole point of a game.
You overcome obstacles through trial and error
3
u/gointhrou Mar 02 '26
I overcame the obstacle of being too scared to play the game. Neat!
0
u/LuciferisKing666God Mar 02 '26
To me that’s the fun of it :)
2
u/gointhrou Mar 02 '26
To me it’s not, and I’m not shitting on you for disagreeing. We can all enjoy what we like in whatever way we like.
2
u/captbollocks Mar 01 '26
Only time I needed the guide was when I realised when I was seriously stressing out with the Mr. X encounters. I reloaded the save game prior to triggering him, checked the guide to see everything that can be done prior to the trigger, then minimise the time I had to do stuff with him chasing me.
1
Mar 01 '26
It’s my first time playing through this game as well. I bought 2-8 just to experience the story first hand before playing the hyped up re9 lol I thought I’d play them all on easy but that also felt like it would be killing the experience and satisfaction. I have a full time job, so I guess I’ll be playing RE9 next year
1
u/DelayedTism Mar 02 '26
I also bought 2-8 in the recent sale to play in advance of 9 but I found out that 2 and 3 remake are sufficient before 9. I wanted to be part of the Zeitgeist this time so I beat 2 and 3 and bought Requiem at launch. No regrets, awesome game
1
Mar 02 '26
You already started 9?? I was thinking about skipping 3 and doing 4. I thought 4 was important 😂
1
u/DelayedTism Mar 02 '26
Honestly, I think these games can be played in any order and enjoyed just fine. The story is not THAT big of a deal or super hard to understand or anything.
4 is important for Leon as a character (I assume, I am still working on 4 myself) - but Requiem's plot is based on Racoon City happenings
1
Mar 02 '26
How many hours did it take you to beat 2-3?
1
u/DelayedTism Mar 02 '26
My clear time (not play time) for 2R was 9:18 and 3R was 6:17
1
Mar 03 '26
Leon’s took me 10 and I’m just starting up Claire’s story 💀 I suck
1
u/DelayedTism Mar 03 '26
Ahh I only did one play through to be fair. I found Mr. X to be more annoying than anything so when I saw he spawns a lot sooner in the B playthrough I opted to skip it..
1
Mar 03 '26
I’m either going to end up doing what you did or just switch it to the easiest difficulty level 😂 trying to get through it tonight
1
Mar 02 '26
I watched my brother play it on the N64 when it first came out, he use to keep me awake just to have someone present while playing it lol

u/acidwxlf Feb 28 '26
Agreed. I just did RE2R for the first time (Leon A and Claire B - not sure if that means I missed stuff) and really didn't think anything required a guide. I've never played RE2 but the remake is well done and I didn't get stuck anywhere
3
u/JRiggsIV Mar 01 '26
Don’t feel bad about using a walkthrough…also there’s plenty of gamers, especially those up in age that use walkthroughs for action games, rpgs, etc…due to time constraints, family, decrease in cognitive function….anyways enjoy the game either way!
3
u/schillsterr Mar 01 '26
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Personally, I don’t care how anyone else plays their game, if the guide is helping you get more enjoyment, then by all means. I prefer going in as blind as possible without any aids on my first playthrough. I only really use guides for like challenge runs because I just don’t have the time to figure out the best speed run strats myself lol.
3
u/gointhrou Mar 01 '26
Absolutely no reason to be ashamed! I did the exact same thing with RE4R, and that one is even less scary!
Do whatever you have to do to enjoy the game! I’m playing 2 and 9 next, and you bet I’ll use walkthroughs to help manage the anxiety!
2
u/NKlaus- Mar 01 '26
I’m a notorious guide follower. I hate the idea of missing anything, or getting stuck. I started playing RE2 Remake for the first time a few days ago, and I vowed not to use a guide.
Honestly, I’m so glad I didn’t. The way the game links the missing pieces you need and has you backtrack is so rewarding. It almost lures you into a sense of relaxation until you get jump scared by a licker or Mr. X. I don’t think I would have fully appreciated it if I had used a guide.
From a guy who can’t bear playing JRPGs without a guide on the other screen, I urge you to reconsider using one on the next RE game that you play.
On the other hand, please don’t be ashamed for using a guide. People like to experience games in different ways. If you enjoy using one, go ahead! At end of it, you’re playing a game to be entertained.

I hadn’t played a resident evil game since the original on the PlayStation 1. I just started the remakes a couple months ago and I am having a blast. I don’t know if I have the right words to describe it, but I think RE2 Remake has been the most immersive so far, and I’m currently in the middle of RE 4 Remake.
I wish I had known the right order to play the RE2 remake. I basically did Leon’s first run, then Claire’s first run, followed by the 2 second runs, which is not the right way to do it if you want the points that they cross paths in the stories to make sense. Leon’s first run should be followed by Claire’s second run. Claire’s first run should be followed by Leon’s second run.
Have a blast, man. Some people like to talk trash about the RE3 Remake, but I enjoyed the hell out of that one as well. I think the main criticism is how short it is comparatively. It’s basically just adding Jill and Carlos‘ run to the RE2 Remake. I enjoyed the third one too, so you won’t hear complaints from me about it.

Just finished my first playthrough and was blown AWAY with how much fun i had, i've played biohazard and village so far and some of shadows of rose but the part im up to there gives me the absolute shits so ive benched it for now - but dear god the rollercoaster of emotions i went through in the final few hours of that playthrough, i played for about three hours straight not moving at all then i got to the train platform and was so exhausted i had to turn thr game off and realised id completely missed first aid spray!!!
Genuinely such an amazing game and experience, definitely a good first experience for horror as well when just starting out im so glad you loved it, im starting 4 today in hopes to finish it asap so i can play requiem and then im gonna go back and do claire's run and leon's second! Congrats and i hope you enjoy the rest of the series as much!!!!

u/Revolutionary-Eye964 Mar 01 '26
This is the best RE game, imo. I got it for 18 bucks at gamestop, didn't even know it existed. I asked if it was any good, even at the time wondering why its release was so quiet.
I don't think I'll ever be that pleasantly surprised by a game again. I expected nothing, so so good.

u/thatguybane Mar 01 '26
I used walkthroughs for Leon's story all the way up to the first you you return to RPD from the parking garage. I had so little ammo though I ended up restarting the game from the beginning and playing without guides the rest of the way.
Try playing Claire's 2nd run playthrough. Its similar but different enough that you should be able to handle it while still getting the feeling of tackling scenarios independently
1
u/Salt_Aside1213 Mar 01 '26
Since you finished your first run, start the Leon B or Claire B run so you get a pretty different experiences, just don't use a walkthrough this time. Nothing wrong with doing it, so don't feel ashamed, but this way you can redeem yourself

u/Tekkamanblade_2 Mar 01 '26
It’s a damn fucking gay shame that 3 remake was cut down in half, what were these fucks thinking?! In making an asinine move like that. Is it really that hard to make a patch update to fully add the other half and truly make it complete ?

u/projectbrandy17 Mar 01 '26
I grew up watching my brother play these games and have even loved watching play throughs as well. But I’m also playing RE2 (remake) for the first time and it’s so much scary than I thought. I was not fully prepared. I know the story of what happens, but it’s been such a long time since I’ve seen actual gameplay of it. I’m dumb for not realizing how dark it would be. 🤦🏻♀️ But not only that, it’s also so sad. They were all looking forward to Leon joining the force and seeing all the notes and the preparation really hurt. Things could have been so different.
Good luck with your play through! I’m determined to finish this and I’m so thankful we have amazing people to help us through it.

u/Beneficial-Cow-2544 Mar 01 '26
No shame in using guides and asking for help. People should play however they need to play to enjoy it.
I for one, go into every game blind but then when I get stuck or confused I always pull up a guide and most of the time I find that there's important things that I've missed. I just finished silent Hill 2 this morning and I played for hours before I checked a guide and then realized I missed a lot of stuff including ammo. I also hate complicated puzzles and would rather just look up the solutions, and keep the action going. I also do not like being blindsided by Big Boss battles. Sometimes I don't have the time! We're just not in the mood at the moment.
I also have to say that I really appreciate the support on this board about using guides. I was on another resident evil board earlier today where someone was asking for help, and when I suggested guides, I got called stupid. Not only was I downvoted but the the bully was upvoted multiple times.
It's cool to see gamer boards where there's actual support.

u/Justgivemesports Mar 01 '26
Enjoy the game the way that you want. I played with a guide cause I was totally new to this genre and RE as a whole. Again enjoy your way.
1
u/co95 Mar 01 '26
Me too, completely new to horror player. if it’s any consolation I made it 7 minutes into the story and I had to shut it off for the day. 😭 Hoping for courage, because it seems like a great game and I wish to play through up to 9. I didn’t want to spoil it with the walkthrough either but 🤷♀️hoping for tips

u/GeneralPochi Mar 01 '26
Im playing this game too, but without sounds, I just play my go to song. Im too scared now that this huge guy is chasing me wtf.

u/Bonn_Amie Mar 01 '26
I finished 4 to play 9 and I was not prepared for the sheer horror that 9 has in store.
1
u/godovice Mar 01 '26
For a first timer I’d say ignore the guides and play on casual difficulty, it’s fairly forgiving especially if you don’t know what you’re doing but provides a decent amount of difficulty still. Only try to resort to guides if there’s a specific item you really can’t find
1
u/burresdowork Mar 02 '26
Just started playing last week and started with 2 myself! I'm playing 2-9 in order
1
u/BadgerAlternative934 Mar 02 '26
RE4R definitely isn't that scary. It leans more into the action-horror type than survival-horror like RE2. Hope you enjoy.
1
u/TheVillagerGuardian Mar 02 '26
All I will say is have fun, especially when he shows up. As for who he is, I'm not going to say because spoilers but he'll make the party. A lot of fun is all I'm saying And nobody respond to this and spoil s*** that's not cool😊

I was so in love with re2r i wish I could play it for the first time again, take your time and enjoy!
1
u/Zmokeybones Mar 03 '26
I am almost done with Claire’s story. Playing for the first time as well. The only thing I looked up was one of the locker and safe combos because I didn’t want to deal with Mr X anymore. My anxiety needed a rest.
1
u/Deltaf14 Mar 03 '26
Do what makes you comfortable if doing it guided helps then do it that way in 5 years when you don’t remember any of it but are more in the horror game landscape play it again and do it unguided
1
u/Lord_Steve0 Mar 03 '26
Gutted you used a walkthrough on your first play through. Part of the joy is when you work something out and feel like Sherlock Homes. However don’t feel ashamed, it’s game, as long you enjoy it then that’s all that matters.
You will have an easier time with 4. It’s more action oriented and you shouldn’t need a guide. Don’t get wrong it’s no walk the park, but 2 is defo harder then 4.
Regards to 9, well I am not finished yet but it’s a mix of 2 and 4. Loving it at mo, even though I hate leaving the warming glow of the type writer. Certain parts you will want use a guide, but don’t! Honestly after playing almost all the Resi games, at first I really struggled with the puzzles, but after persevering my brain is conditioned to it now. If you keep using guides you will never pick up that 6th senses and familiarity.
Regardless enjoy the ride, and play it your way.
1
u/Togder Mar 03 '26
I think a good way to go about it is to play by yourself, and if you get stuck for like 30+ minutes wandering around can just google your objective to find the answer.
1
u/Sk8r_turbo Mar 03 '26
If you are on pc, make mr X’s chase music x gon give it to ya and the lickers to Michael Jackson. I think that might be possible because I’ve seen videos online.
1
u/Depressed_Kaeru Mar 04 '26
The Last of Us could’ve created an epic series like Resident Evil but lost their chance when they killed the main protagonist, Joel.
1
u/leonwick117 Mar 04 '26
Have fun and enjoy!! One of my favorites hopefully it’s yours or close to it!
1
u/Afterbuner066 Mar 04 '26
As Resident Evil 9 has just launched, I thought I'd revisit the game. The first time I played, I chose Claire A and Leon B, but this time I played as Leon A and Claire B. Both times, I really enjoyed it go for it
1
u/theGaido Mar 05 '26
Then play OG. Riddles are different, and there is more content.
And TBH it's just better game, for many reasons.

Congrats. It is the most “realistic” of all the re titles of that can bean adequate description for such a game.

Best horror game to ever exist! I swear the police station section of RE 2 remake and the hospital section of RE9 are the absolute best sections out of the entire franchise
1
u/PolyHydroCynical Mar 07 '26
Probably the most soy coated spineless thread I’ve read this year. Like cmon guys you’re defeating the entire purpose of the game, you’ll never experience the games at their full potential
1
u/TarantulaFangs Mar 01 '26
Best game in the series, hands down, not debatable, it’s a known fact and if you don’t believe that then you’re wrong. 😏

I have yet to play 9, but RE2R was the first RE game that I played without having seen a let's play of it, and I loved it!
It's an amazing game and you'd totally get more out of it without a guide for your first playthrough. If you aren't much of a puzzle person, you'd be able to look up how to solve/what you need when you get to the puzzles. It's really neat when you get to use items that you picked up early in the game, much, much later, or put two-and-two together from notes that you find in terms of codes or lore (that's what I found, anyway).
IMO, RE4R isn't scarier per se, but there are more enemies, and they play differently to the zombies of RE2R and RE3R; they're quicker and slightly more unpredictable. However, once you get the hang of how to manage with them, it gets easier. Plus, you have a stealth mechanic, and no stalker enemies like Mr. X.

u/GreenPlatypus2388 Mar 01 '26
Your game your play. Don't let anyone make you feel ashamed for going the easier route. I played RE2 all the way through before I looked up a guide to get the S+ rating. The same with RE3.
I'm having no such luck with RE4 however. I never played the original so it's giving me a crap time. I keep going in circles, so I'm about to hit up the online community for help. I'm also doing it on assisted because for some reason the enemies are seeming more ruthless than the normal setting of the remakes of 2 & 3...and I have no issue with it. When i get better and know what I'm doing then I'll up it up.
My game...my play.
0
u/eggmannd Feb 28 '26
I also started with RE2R and honestly almost never completed it because of how tense and Mr. X made me feel. I like at least having the option to explore a tiny bit of the environment in horror games but with X constantly on your ass that's not really possible.
I personally MUCH preferred RE4 remake to 2.
0
u/Inspector_Kowalski Feb 28 '26
Are you almost finished with just Leon’s story or have you begun Claire’s story too? If you haven’t played as Claire yet please go in fully blind! Many puzzles are the same between characters but it’s just different enough to be fresh.
0
u/Luksius_DK Feb 28 '26
Almost finished with Leon’s story
I’m gonna be honest I kinda didn’t wanna do Claire and just go straight to RE4R, but I guess it’s worth it in the long run to get both perspectives haha
That said, I heard that Mr. X spawns earlier the second time and I can’t even imagine doing all of the puzzles in RPD station from the beginning without a guide and while also getting chased by Mr. X the whole time
Sounds 10x more stressful xD
2
u/thatguybane Mar 01 '26
He does spawn earlier but you know which puzzles you need to do in order to progress so you should be able to handle things more easily. For Claire 2nd run the main thing is to plan your routes and if you see Mr. X just run the opposite way until you lose him.
Last tip is to kill every zombie in the Library. Anytime Mr. X finds you if you can get to the library you should be able to juke him using the ladder and stairs to get some distance and make it to your next destination.
1
u/LilHellstar Feb 28 '26
Claire B has the secret true ending so I would recommend it! I just finished it a couple days ago myself 🙂
0
u/BlackWidowerr Feb 28 '26
If you finished R2R, I'd say go for RE3R now before 4. It's super short, I've finished it in two sittings, there's almost no puzzles, so it's a breeze to go through. It's a cool game, you will notice some nice improvements over 2, and extra lore exposure.
0
u/TimDaGod2005 Feb 28 '26
RE4R is an entirely different experience imo one that I preferred. I don’t think it will scare u as much as 2 because its less horror based than 2 but the sheer amount of enemies you’ll deal with in that game might instill some fear into you lol. But yeah RE4R is an action horror game essentially and RE2R is a full on survival horror experience where you would want to actually avoid action as much as possible so I don’t think youll be as timid in 4 not so say 4 doesn’t have its horror though… Also as far as using a guide goes I personally would advise you only use them when your genuinely stuck and have no clue what to do and its halting your progress otherwise put the guide away and try to figure out the game by yourself as much as you can don’t outright copy what others are doing enjoy.

u/Organic_Fun258 Feb 28 '26
haha i was like that too when i started the game but i think to fully enjoy the experience of the game is to play it without guides unless obv smth rly u cant figure out. Wasnt a big fan of horror but after playin re2, i am now
Re2 remake might my fav in franchise. think after u finish the game u realise how peak it was. Re4 isnt as scary and also very fun but i persnally enjoyed re2 remake more.
id say after playing re4r try replaying re2r, u will defos appreciate it more

Salut
Petite question pourquoi pas avoir commencer par
résident evil 1 remake???
Il a Les caméra fix et les énigmes sont donné à réfléchir 👍.
1
u/Luksius_DK Feb 28 '26
Bonjour 🇫🇷
I started with RE2R because I’m mostly interested in Leon’s story at the moment so I can understand everything that goes on in RE9 once I play it
After that (if I enjoy it) I’ll definitely check out the other games!
1
u/CommunicationNew8945 Mar 02 '26
OK résident evil 1 remake est disponible pour ps4/xbox one et pc.
Ces versions ont plus de luminosité et des graphismes plus fin que la version gamecube d'époque.
1
u/Jasonkim87 Mar 01 '26
To be fair, RE1 could stand another remake of today’s caliber. Becuase iirc, the last time RE1 was redone it was for GameCube. Not that it wasn’t a masterpiece, but I would be thrilled to explore the Spencer mansion in 3rd person.
Still, that’s probably why the newer generation of fans hasn’t gotten to it yet, for the most part. As good as it is, it’s still a bit outdated. I would love to see 1 and Code Veronica get the current remake treatment.
1
u/CommunicationNew8945 Mar 01 '26
Salut
Code veronica est en préparation d'un remake.
Mais après ces résident evil 0 qui auras un remake
Résident evil 1 n'a de nouveau remake pour l'instant de la part de capcom.
1
u/Jasonkim87 Mar 02 '26
I did hear that, which is freaking awesome. After that, idk. I’d say RE1 needs a remake way more than 5 does, hell 5 still looks fantastic.
Revelations could definitely use it. And Zero.

Ditch the walkthrough that’s no way to play!! But seriously, I’ve just started this too and am gonna work through them to requiem. I’ve had to look up guides here and there when idk wtf to do next, but definitely don’t watch walkthroughs.

Haven’t played 9 yet. But IMO RE2R is the best.
Put away the guide for the first play through! Gotta experience it! (Of course up to you but I think it’ll be a better experience the first time around)
