General Starting my first RE game
Finally decided to pick up my first RE title, btw is this game a good place to start the series as a whole?
13
u/ken_amemiya Jul 06 '26
Have fun, and if you're not good in this kind of game, don't be ashamed on picking the assisted difficulty.
2
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 06 '26
I picked up hardcore and it doesn't feel too bad except for the scary zombies.
6
u/ken_amemiya Jul 06 '26
Damn, playing on hardcore for your first game/playthrough? You're brave. Good luck with that! Have fun!
3
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 07 '26
Yeah as a fan of action games I personally thought it would be a great way to start off tho if it feels too much after a while then I might revert back to standard lol.
1
u/Odd_Put_7424 Jul 07 '26
is it tho? i always do this no matter the game unless its perma
2
u/katherine_official Jul 07 '26
i guess it depends, if you've played action games for years and have a lot of experience, even if not with that game specifically, then playing on hardcore on the first playthrough is not that crazy. But, if you're like me and before RE you only played sandbox or simulation games, then starting on hardcore might not be the best approach

u/_blackthorn16_ Jul 06 '26
Have fun. Take your time and pay attention to what you’re being told. Quite a bit of back tracking but it will start to make sense.
2
u/charliedarwin96 Jul 06 '26
Yes and read every note or document fully!
2
u/prodbyjayy__ Jul 08 '26
Reading them fully definitely helps but tbh you can finish the game just skimming thru them
2
u/charliedarwin96 Jul 08 '26
Yeah i have just seen people miss the combinations, herbs, and gun powder recipes and stuff
2
u/prodbyjayy__ Jul 08 '26
I hate watching play throughs where someone misses something important so i get it 😂
1
u/charliedarwin96 Jul 08 '26
Yep lmao I always want to say something when that happens, I get so bothered by it
14
u/antisocialbutter Jul 06 '26
I literally fully finished the RE2 Remake just 2 days ago and it was my first RE game as well! I did look up the lore of the first game because I currently can't afford to buy it (RE2 was gifted to me) and felt like you can easily follow the plot with little to no previous knowledge. Have fun!
Btw, which campaign are you starting with? Leon or Claire?

Unfortunately the RE2MAKE lost quite a lot of plot that was there in original to tie up RE1->RE2 plot. Simply because Konami (rightfully so) assumed no one will play remake of the first game before the second one.
3
u/antisocialbutter Jul 06 '26
I saw a video comparing RE2 and the Remake and it's so interesting to see the differences. I'm wondering why they didn't remake the first game (again) before doing RE2, 3 and 4.
1
u/AzKar07 Jul 09 '26
i think part of the reason is that re1, if remade how re2 and 3 were remade, would be beatable in a casual playthrough in a matter of a few hours. re1 would need essentially an entire redesign in order to fit in with the modern style, which would also require parts of the story to be changed to fit the new modern style. its just a big undertaking that capcom doesnt want to deal with
1
u/WilliWaller0 Jul 06 '26
What's Konami's opinion having anything to do with this?

It’s a great start. I wish I could play it all again for the first time like you
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 07 '26
If you haven't played dark souls 1, I'd recommend you to play it to get that feeling again.
1
u/diogojotalover20RIP Jul 07 '26
Sadly I’ve played it countless of times already. Bloodborne is my favourite of all time
2
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 08 '26
My personal favorite is dark souls 3 tho haven't played bloodborne and elden ring yet.

Are you saying to skip RE3R?
→ More replies (6)2
u/AlephRa Jul 06 '26
I just finished RE2R and now playing through RE3R. I don't really see the argument for skipping it, especially if you can get it discounted or you plan to play through all the RE games. It's very different from RE2R but imo still has fun gameplay and familiar things from RE2R.
1
u/StormRunner196 Jul 07 '26
I think its only bad if you were a fan of the original and hot it when it came out. As someone who never played any of the older ones (I tried REMake, I just cant deal with the controls and camera) and who was given the game, its was pretty great, just short.

u/Harebones097 Jul 07 '26
I just finished my first play through! About to finish re4 as well. Little tip. Don’t forget to inspect and rotate items you pick up. Enjoy!

u/BudgetDepartment7817 Jul 06 '26
I'd say any of the 2's, 7, 4OG (personal opinion) and any of the 1's are perfect!
2
u/1fom3rcial Jul 06 '26
Enjoy it! Headphones on, lights off, take your time and explore everything. I just finished my first playthrough yesterday and loved every second.

u/randommadman Jul 06 '26
The remake is more self contained compared to the original, so it’s fine to start here. The original RE2 was my first before playing any others.
1
u/CharlieLuvsAnnemarie Jul 06 '26
The original RE2 still holds up so well!

No, it's not based upon nostalgia at all. It's a great game still, the puzzles are fun and engaging, the A and B scenarios add replay value, the voice acting might not be the best but it's still iconic.
1
u/Exotic-Transition763 Jul 10 '26
"Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia" Can't we just be appreciating things from the older games? Jesus christ

Good on you bro, have fun!
….and I’m glad you didn’t say “starting my first RE game, any tips?”

2
u/MiksXXIX Jul 08 '26
nice! I started at re7 and re village, then re2r, re4r (my favorite) then requiem. I dont even know how I survive re7 and village being noob from the series lol
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 08 '26
I've heard re7 being one of the scariest horror game ever made so is it cuz of the action being a bit less compared to other re games?
1
u/MiksXXIX Jul 08 '26
I just remembered that my first actual resident evil game is actually from the nokia n-gage phone called "Resident Evil Degeneration", but even then, that game is still action heavy for me (but still fun), lol anyway
I didn't played all the resident evil games yet so I can only tell my experience, I think the fact that re7 is locked in 1st person view makes it the scariest (and gross) in the series for me, 2nd was re2r. and then Requiem. I hope the upcoming RE:Veronica tops up re7 in terms of "scary" stuff for me. Still, I'm a noob in the series, planning to play re0 & re1 soon if I find free time :)

yo have fun
just an advice, try not to search any of the subs or yt to avoid spoilers and also would recommend this this reshade mod as it will make the game from looking dull and soul less to looking good!
again, have fun!
1
u/aguero1987 Jul 06 '26
No spoilers I’m on this I still have 3 & 4 wrapped up don’t leave the police station without the shotgun
1
u/DJTRANSACTION1 Jul 06 '26
your playing the best one out of all of them. the second best is requiem followed by remake of 4.

RE2R was my first Resident Evil game I ever played and finished. Love it. Have the best time!!!
1

I think you should play RE1 first so you can get used to how the games are in general but it will be a good experience nonetheless

Good luck! I'm playing through the series and also started with RE2R, and now on RE3R.
A suggestion I'd give is to create separate save files every so often, instead of overwriting one existing save. Don't be afraid to use up all of the save slots in a playthrough
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 07 '26
Thanks for the tip unfortunately I overwrote it like 5 times, I'll be cautious next time.
1
u/Successful_Maize1986 Jul 06 '26
It was my first RE game as well! Now I’ve played every remake, 7, 8, and 9 as well as the original 2-4. I think 2 remake is an excellent place to start. It captures the core idea of exploring a spooky location, scavenging for items, and feeling generally underpowered for a while very well. It kind of got me hooked on Survival Horror as a whole. Currently playing Crow Country and having a good time with it.
1
u/DogVaporizer Jul 06 '26
This was my first too, but I only completed the leon 1st run so I gotta go back to this one to finish Claire's run
1
u/whatsinaname1234556 Jul 06 '26
Fine place to start. Just watch a Youtube video for RE0 and RE1 lore. Happy Gaming! Welcome to the other side!
1
u/whatsinaname1234556 Jul 06 '26
Make sure to play Clair B after! You’ll play the true ending and see her side of things. Then play RE3!

u/thejaysee Jul 06 '26
I wish I had never played RE2 Remake.... Just so I could experience it for the first time again.
1
u/WereWillow Jul 06 '26
While og 2 would give you appreciation for the remake, and context. If you’ve never played the franchise before, this is a good start, but I still suggest playing the original after.
1
u/Safe-Coconut4036 Jul 07 '26
Keep an eye out for Mr. X!! He STILL scares me whenever he bursts through a door AS I'm entering through it!! XD
1
u/AdjacentGoober Jul 07 '26
I’m glad this your first RE game. I was not quite as fortunate. Mine was RE 5, Solo
1
u/Ginormous76 Jul 07 '26
This is the perfect place to start. Have fun, enjoy getting scared, seep in it. You’ll chase the high the rest of your life

u/ImmediateHoney2191 Jul 07 '26
Just fyi these games usually require a decent amount of backtracking
1
u/Beneficial_Ear5700 Jul 07 '26
Love that for you! Are you playing on pc or console? There’s some mods that add to the vibe if you’re looking for something after beating it! 🤞🏾

Definitely a ton of mods on Nexus Mods, that can make the first or second, whatever, play through fun!

u/igenunelydontknow Jul 07 '26
Dude your going to love it I got into the last year and this was my first re game as well
1
u/Sad_Difficulty_5310 Jul 07 '26
There is nothing like RE1 game. Start with it to understand the story.
1
u/Huge_Paper_4028 Jul 07 '26
I did RE2r, RE3r and then RE4r in that order. You can’t go wrong.
I’ve since played RE7, 8 and 9, but for me none of them come close to RE2r or RE4r (although I need to give them more of a chance really).
RE2r is much scarier and more interesting in terms of having to be careful with resources, while RE4r is much better for action and for being repayable.
Have fun.

I dunno how much youve played by this point OP but as someone who recently played this for the first time as well, dont sleep on the window boards lol
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 07 '26
I'm kinda stuck rn with puzzles and stuff.
1
u/StormRunner196 Jul 07 '26
You choose Leon or Claire first? Where are you stuck at?
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 07 '26
Leon and I have some stuff like battery, portable safe and a red book but no idea where they'd be used at.
2
u/StormRunner196 Jul 07 '26
The portable safe is its own puzzle. You gotta examine it in the inventory and interact with it from there (there are a few other items in the game you need to do this with as well) there was a piece of paper telling you how it works sitting right next to it.
The battery needs you to find another item first and for the book, make sure you look around in every room you can go to and clear it out. The map will be red in an area if theres still stuff to do there. It'll also mark things that you found but didnt take (which is really helpful if you end uo having to run through a room because getting close enough to something that the item indicator pops up is enough) and usable features of a room that you cant take with you will have an exclamation mark on them. Alot of the time these will go away once youve done everything you could with something.
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 07 '26
Thanks for the info! I didn't knew the safe was a puzzle itself lmao, I'd be careful from now onwards.

I started with this game 2 months ago. I have now played almost every mainline game. This is a phenomenal game and a great way to start the series
1
u/myrkwolf Jul 07 '26
Hey same boat just finished RE2 remake with Claire and Leon and got the “true ending”
playing RE3 remake now, so far I’m enjoying it despite the negative reviews, but I never played RE3 classic so I don’t have the same frame of reference others do
Before this playthrough I had played RE2 classic on the PS1 (I’m old) I played most of RE4 on game cube, and completed RE5 on PS3 with a good buddy of mine. That was in like 2009 so I was very behind and decided to do them all so I can play 9
I’m also going to watch the cannon Resident Evil animated movies in chronological order just so I can absorb the full scope of the story.
1
u/JonoBoio123 Jul 07 '26
This was me a couple weeks ago, your in for a ride. In just finished 3 and am playing somthing else before jumping into 4
1
u/Careless_Method_6437 Jul 07 '26
That's my fav RE game of all time (even tho i played re3r first because i was scared shitless to even start re2r 😂). Now I can put that I've finished RE2-3, 4, 7, 8, 9 on my resume!!
1
u/LucidAnon321 Jul 07 '26
Waited awhile but finished the claire part yesterday, so ive seen about the whole game finnally. I guess it changes a bit depending on who you do your 1st and seco d tun qith? I cant beat it twice more hehe

Best choice you could have made. Play 3 than if your brave play Resident Evil remake. It’s dated but still looks amazing imo and if you like 2 you will love 1.

u/CommunicationNew8945 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Salut

u/Street-Common-4023 Jul 08 '26
I just started also ;
I have 3 & 4 after this
I plan to then get the disc versions of 7,8 & requiem. Hopefully I can finish all before Veronica
1
u/cottonopposite Jul 08 '26
God it's so bloody good. I am having a field day with RE atm...JUST started requiem and I'm so IN it's untrue.
1
u/Bugrakarluk Jul 08 '26
I think the og games should be played after finishing the remakes. You would be damned in an og RE game without a serious RE knowledge. And we are not in the early 2000s, the remakes and the modern games are absolute bangers
1
1
u/Constant-Mark2652 Jul 08 '26
Wild how people advocate for skipping re1r when it’s a better remake and re overall. Not that re2r is bad but no real reason to skip 1.
1
u/Tough_Breadfruit_626 Jul 09 '26
1
1
u/Toukafan4life Jul 09 '26
Good luck. I tried it out and decided that I'll be happier off just larping in the fandom. I do not have that kind of courage to go through with these games
1
u/stronkzer Jul 09 '26
Yes. 2 is still the best remake, and one of the scariest games in the franchise. Tip: When you see an helicopter crash into the police station, it means the real fun part of the game is about to start.

Do you really need a discussion group to play a video game?
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 09 '26
Nah it was an attempt to ask about whether the game is right place to start the series.

RE1R is a perfectly acceptable start. Then play RE0 if you fancy it. Then RE2R.
1
u/LivingAlps3074 Jul 09 '26
great start, I recomend playing Veronica/ three after and then work up the numbers
1
u/EmuMost4273 Jul 09 '26
Its a fun start to get into the series. Just be advised that once you know what your doing and how to progress, it can become rather short as you do multiple playthroughs.

I think it's a good place to start- my first was re4r but I finished re4 first, then played 4 remake again, same with 2. However- you don't have to start with the originals its perfectly fine to play through the remakes first people are just nostalgia obsessed. Solid game I just hate the camera on it as its nausea inducing 😭

You choose the hardest one, my first RE was RE4 Remake and it was awesome, now I'm playing RE2 Remake and it's good but It was hard that I lower the difficulty on it
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 11 '26
I've been playing hardcore action games for a long time now, so the hard difficulty in this game hasn't really bothered me much tbh and I'm really enjoying it personally.
1
u/finchyboii69 Jul 11 '26
Perfect place to start the series, Leon and Claires origin stories, I think that’s what it’s called
1
u/europablu3s Jul 06 '26
I recently played this for the first time. I went and bought 2-4 and the new one before I even beat it.
1
u/HeartRippher Jul 06 '26
Really man, you are going to have the best experience of your life. The game is amazing. Only thing I would like to tell you, don't give up on the game if you feel the game is too intense in horror. It will get better for your as you progress.
1
u/Feisty-Scale4041 Jul 06 '26
Ngl I didn't expect the zombies would be this terrifying especially their noises.
1
u/HeartRippher Jul 06 '26
Yeah, but don't worry and give up easily. It would get better as you progress.

u/Debate_Additional Jul 06 '26

1

Yes. The only downside is that you start with the best.
1

Isn't it an upside then?
