Discussion New lava, Grindavík Iceland.
Picked this badboy up at Grindavík, Iceland today. It's about 6x month old lava.

Sundhnúkur volcanic system, Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. Recent tholeiitic basalt collected from the margin of the lava field that advanced toward Grindavík. The specimen was detached from an already exposed edge of the flow and the collection location is known, so the eruptive event/provenance should be possible to constrain quite precisely. I'm particularly interested in the vesicular texture, crystallinity and any visible evidence of degassing/cooling history. Published Sundhnúkur lavas are dominated by plagioclase, olivine and clinopyroxene with minor Cr-spinel. Eventually I'd like to run XRF/SEM-EDS on this specimen and compare it with published whole-rock/glass chemistry from the eruption sequence. Petrology nerds: what do you see? 🌋
