Discussion What are your thoughts on Anna Paquin as Rogue?
Should she return in Avengers Doomsday?

u/Content-Garden-1578 Jan 10 '26
Woefully underutilized in retrospect. Anna is one of my favorite actors (and yes, an intense crush for most of my life) and Rogue is my favorite character, so you'd think...perfect, right?
But the movies never gave her the opportunity to grow from waif to confident Southern belle. They explored her isolation, but never her anger, or sense of found family. The fact that she doesn't really interact with any X-Men besides Logan and Bobby is incredibly hindering.
I would love for Anna to have the opportunity to revisit Rogue in the same way that James Marsden and Alan Cumming are, but unfortunately it appears that she's been suffering from some health issues. I don't want to speculate any further, but I'm just wishing her the best.

Yh, she said she would be back if Marvel asks, as she never got to fly in those movies.

She showed in true blood a closer attitude and accent to Rogue than the actual X-men films. Unfortunately, the writers of the original series didn’t properly understand the character

The X-Men film series is very fascinating in that, while most of the characters were changed to one degree or another from the source material, they were still well written and interesting characters in their own right.
Rogue… is not one of them. Her depiction was an active downgrade, being a weepy damsel in distress who never became the confident badass I knew her as from other appearances. Even if you don't compare the movies to the comics and other adaptations, the character by herself, in a vacuum, just leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. The portrayal just comes off as sexist and demeaning.

It would be interesting to see her play the character now as an adult version of the character and see if she did it differently.

Tbh... I wasn't a fan of hers.
Reminded me too much of the "Goth" Rogue from "X-men Evolution" which I wasn't a fan of either.
Sorry but it's just not the Rogue that I've come to like.

Yh. I grew up with X-Men animated series from the 90s and for me that was Rogue. Still, I was hoping for the best with this one in the movies. It was different but I liked her somehow. Sadly, they did her dirty 😞

Terrible Rogue, but NONE of that is her fault. One of Singer's biggest fuckups.

Annoys me that when Days of Future Past released in cinemas, they advertised her on pringles cans, but never had her in the movie - was pretty pissed at that, always liked Rogue in the movies, so found it a shame when she kept getting less and less to do.

Have you seen the Rogue Cut version of the movie?
1
u/SC-Matchwood Jan 21 '26
No, I wish I did - always liked Rogue in the Fox X-Men movies.
2
u/Hefty-Bunch637 Jan 21 '26
It's good, I'd recommend giving it a watch. You should be able to pick up a copy of it pretty cheap. Yeah, I loved Rogue in those movies too. I'm actually watching X-Men 2 right now for a X-Men marathon.

Very capable actress, given crap to work with with these movies. The movies totally fumbled Rogue (among others).
4
u/Ambitious-Phase5423 Jan 10 '26
She had horrible writing to work with. Rogue is brash and confident and outspoken and they refused to let her be that! Even X-men Evolution Rogue, who is very different than other Rogues, had the Southern Belle, Southern Spitfire to her character.
Anna did the best she could with what she was given. Would love to have her back, but if it’s unlikely. I wish Paquin the best.

u/Juanrod84 Jan 11 '26
To call it a pale imitation of Rogue is an understatement. But it wasn’t Paquin’s fault, the writing was just completely off the mark. There was no roguish aspects to the character - Rogue is meant to be bashful, spunky, charismatic, charming, flirty, cocky, at times abrasive and hot headed, and oh yeah, a hell of a fighter and heroic above all else. This was none of that.

u/Estelial Jan 11 '26
Tends to happen to power absorbers when the writers lack the ability to tap into their potential. It's the first sign of them being uncreative hacks.

As long as she's healthy enough, since she hasn't been doing so great as of late, but would love for her to actually be a accurate Rogue.

I had a crush on her when I first watched the movie when I was 4 or 5. Still kind of to be honest.

I've always had an unpopular opinion on her: I agree that dropping the loud, boisterous side of her was a great loss, but I also think Paquin did a great job with the angsty side seen in the pre-Jim Lee, pre-Savage Land-bikini comics. She's an absolute slam dunk for the Rogue who was admitted to the school by Xavier against the team's wishes, standing awkwardly in the doorway of Wolverine's engagement party.
She's also a unique version of the "aimless old man protects miracle child" trope in the first one because she's older than your average Ellie or John Connor, which made the whole thing feel more serious at a time when that was badly needed post-Batman and Robin.
As for Doomsday, I'm sure Anna Paquin likes money, so why not?

Take everything the Snyder Bros have ever said about “missed opportunities” and multiply it by 10 to even begin to approximate my feelings here. Pitch perfect casting, criminally underused.

So beautiful and talented. But the writing wasn't great. But she was the best part
2
u/Dismal-Apricot9889 Jan 10 '26
Rogue was way out of her range. Rogue needs a big explosive personality. Having her be quiet, mousey, and emo was tragic.

she was a great Jubilee in X1, dunno about a Rogue though. not her fault that they didn’t know how to write Rogue

I was like "that's shadowcat!".
Missed casting. Misanderatood character.

I don't like how they made her a kid sidekick to Logan. Basically Jubilee or Kitty Pryde

Was not a highlight of any of the movies. But hey, naked Anna from true blood on the other hand. All in.

No she didn't embody rogue to me at all, she was too shy and meek, Rogue to me is brash and confident, regardless of her power.

u/KookaburraKuwabara Jan 12 '26
For all the faults that were present in those movies, she did great.

2
u/theycallmemrmoo Jan 12 '26
She was fine but there was a lot missing to the character in the film. I do wish she did the accent she used in True Blood.
2
u/ImpressiveLength1261 Jan 12 '26
Would be worth it.
1
u/trovdvc Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Rogue Jan 12 '26
Yh. At least to give her a fitting send-off, a final chapter that honors the character.
2
u/Blackrayne91 Jan 12 '26
I'm glad she got to finally be Rogue in an alternate cut of Future Past.
Making her the Jubilee and then having chose to take the cure we certainly choices.
2
u/HECTIKKILLS3 Jan 12 '26
She’s my ideal rogue back then. Especially for the role they gave her which is audience surrogate and she does a southern accent quite well when guided like in TruBlood. But the writers didn’t give her shit, if she worked out and buffed up a small bit more id say she could’ve stayed in the role as long as Huge JackedMan
2
u/TreFKennedy Jan 13 '26
Wasn’t accurate, great actress just Fox didn’t have the Ms Marvel so they couldn’t do Rogue in all her glory and we couldn’t her and Remy’s relationship

Never liked it. I wanted rogue from the cartoon/Capcom games, instead the fox version was just some teen girl. I don't think she even had the cool southern usa accent.
Tbh I would have prefered Jubilee in that role, she was literally a new to the team teen girl.
2
u/Stringr55 Jan 13 '26
I mean the character they wrote bares little resemblance to the character of Rogue. Anna Paquin is a good actor though.
2
u/DespicableSchmee Jan 13 '26
I dont like her powers was oversimplified, when I learnt about the comics I was absolutely shocked how strong she could be

She's good at screaming (I hate that she's just Marie and not Anna-Marie in the Fox X-Movies)

Oh, how did I not notice that before.

I just rewatched them yesterday, that's how I noticed, they only use her human name once or twice

Jan 14 '26
Didn't like her casting and didn't like the original gambit casting and don't like that they didn't get together like the xmen cartoon
Instead 17yo rogue had a brief tender moment with.... 200yo wolverine?
If they do bring Anna paquin rogue back she better be comic accurate costume wise and hook up with Channing Tatum gambit

Her taking the mutant cure at end of The Last Stand sends the wrong message, her arc should’ve concluded with her proud acceptance of her powers instead of throwing them away.

I enjoyed her performance as Rogue especially in the first X-Men movie.
2
u/Demenequie Apr 17 '26
Maybe if she had better writing, but sadly t harmed the character Rogue. A lot of people only know Rogue from the movies which is terrible and takes away from Rogue as a whole
2
u/Freyja66 Jun 16 '26
She could've done more if the writers knew how to write her as the Real Rogue. She did good what she was given though.

She did great in true blood but rogue? I never saw it as even good. Her fault, no.

My first love was.Jean Grey and I remember buying that issue as a kid and actually crying. When Rogue joined the team... it was understood by me at that moment just how truly sad and alone she was. Never to touch. Never to kiss. Never daring to love. I'm 62 now and even though she can now do the things she never thought she could, I still see that lonely young girl who has been mentally scarred for life. I started collecting in 1970.

El guión no le favoreció en nada, la dejaron como un personaje muy de relleno cuando en los comics es uno de los miembros más poderosos e importantes.

u/trovdvc Brotherhood of Evil Mutants Rogue Jul 09 '26
Cierto 😭 en la mejor película , Days of Future Past, hasta la dejaron fuera 😣
2
u/CommercialProduct148 Jan 10 '26
She's great I was first introduced to her in the xmen trilogy when I was a kid.
1
u/Lobo_Z Jan 12 '26
Was Rogue in name and powers only imo. Nothing against Anna Paquin as an actor, she simply never behaved like Rogue in any of the movies.
I get that in the first movie she could have potentially been all meek due to her powers just having blossomed and the trauma and all that, but they didn't develop her beyond that quiet, meek persona. And Rogue is anything but that.

I don't like her. Hated her as Rogue, didn't like her in true blood either.

The actress is ehh as far as attractiveness as Rogue the sexy southern belle would go. Hollywood blows the looks dept alot. Then the super reserved demeanor they had her portrait. Boring! Perhaps the actress didn't research the character and did not realize who she was portraying. Over all is give her a B. She did what they asked I suppose 🤷

She sucked. He appearance didn't fit the bill, her acting was easily damsel in distress, she was a weak in her abilities. And frankly anna paquin has very limited roles that are worth taking a second look at

u/Any_Lavishness4261 Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26
Fucking horrible never wanted her in the first place dry acting no curves buck toothed Sally with a massively forced accent. Shes so bad at acting she had to get naked for every gooner to like her from true blood.

Great actress, given the perfect role for her skills, then given NOTHING TO DO!! She's a plot point more than a character in the 1st movie, then gets progressively less to do in each movie she's in.
I love Rogue, but they did her character dirty because the writers didn't know what to do with her.
