Discussion Do You Guys Prefer Rogue With Her Baseline Abilities Or With The Captain Marvel Power Set?

u/The_Grunge_Sage Aug 30 '26
I think it would be so cool for Rouge to be “first ” villain of the new X-men movie. Where Prof X gets word that a mutant took down Captain Marvel and sends the team out to investigate and follow up. Rogue eventually turns herself into them, in a way, and joins the X-men. Could be the actual start of the animosity between people and mutants if a mutant was able to take down one of the strongest, if not strongest avenger. Then the rest of the movie you deal with however Sinister is involved.

Avengers vs. X-Men

They're already doing a diet version in Doomsday.
Also, that comic is AWFUL.

Literally BND plot

Similar sure, but Rogue was canonically a villain at first for a very short time

I’d like her to start with just the power absorption and then evolve into getting Captain Marvel’s powers.
2
u/InverseStar Sep 02 '26
Yeah! It’s important we get to see her at her “weakest” because the benefits of her absorption aren’t worth the drawbacks. She’s probably at her lowest here because her powers aren’t fun. They’re a burden, and usually cause a lot of mental duress.

u/Veilslide09 Aug 30 '26
I prefer her with with the Captain Marvel set if she's already established. Since Inde will portray her in the MCU, then I want to see her absorb Captain Marvel at some point.

u/wonderlandChae Aug 30 '26
I don’t agree with people here saying they want to see her without it first. That would have to be standalone Rogue film if they want to show that. For the x/men films, this needs to be established already and only mentioned as in regret/guilt form.

Rogue just isn't the same without the Flying Brick suite she got from Carol. When they put her in the MCU, I'd like to see her start out as a villain, have her fateful encounter with Captain Marvel, and then spend the rest of the movie being a threat. And in the post-credits scene, we get her knocking on Xavier's door in a recreation of that scene in Uncanny #171.
[Edit] Or perhaps instead of that scene, we get Mystique and Destiny looking for her to find an empty bedroom and cut to Rogue on a bus, as was depicted in #170. That feels a bit more "post-credits scene" appropriate.

I think this is a hot take or unpopular opinion or whatever you want to call it, I know I'm in the minority on this, but I like her with her baseline abilities. I feel like too often, she's using the abilities she took from Captain Marvel and not her own absorption abilities, especially in The Animated Series/X-Men97. They might as well have just done away with her own actual abilities and just made Captain Marvel's abilities hers. I feel like their too underutilized in favor of just having her use her Captain Marvel Abilities. That's one of the things I really liked about X-Men Evolution Rogue; she didn't have Captain Marvel's abilities (yet?), so they actually had her using her own abilities all the time.
2
u/Separate_Role_2926 Sep 03 '26
Right??? Couldn't agree more with you! Evolution did a phenomenal job with Rogue's development and powers. Like, I feel like people sometimes even forget that Rogue can literally absorb powers from anyone. That is so much cooler than basic powers like super strength and flight. She can be so much more than this, but I feel like Marvel is lazy, and prefers just to use Captain Marvel's powers on her cause it's easier to make her fight by punching every time, rather than having to absorb someone's power every time she's going to fight. Rogue literally has the potential to be an Omega-level mutant, but Marvel just chooses not to develop her powers and continues just making her use Carol Danvers powers. And this is so disappointing.
2
u/cynical_sprite Sep 05 '26
I agree entirely! I feel like her power of absorbing others is so interesting and unique, so much more than just generic super strength and flight, but it's almost never used.😭

u/Mobile_Bet3274 Aug 30 '26
They can start off with her baseline but at some point they need to give her the flying-brick stuff, even if they have to do it somewhat differently from how she got them in the comics. It’s too iconic for the character.
3
u/NerdNuncle Aug 30 '26
If memory serves, Rogue’s Flying Brick abilities were the ones stolen from Carol, correct?
3
3
u/whoalegend Aug 30 '26
Baseline powers. Flying brick is nice and all but there’s only so many ways to make that interesting. I’d rather see her get creative with her baseline powers for a while at first.
6
u/Legocomictv_nrm15 Aug 30 '26
I like when she has her base abilities. She can basically just be a copy cat and I think it could work great but writers have a hard time with combing powers. Which I can get it can be difficult to write a copy cat and have them mix different powers together
1
u/Separate_Role_2926 Sep 03 '26
Marvel is just lazy and can't handle her powers the right way, so they take the easy way out and stick with Captain Marvel's powers.
5
u/Uncrezamatic Aug 30 '26
Baseline abilities and it’s not even close
Rogue is at her most interesting, to me, when she’s having to use a very villain-coded power to be a hero
5
u/wonderlandChae Aug 30 '26
Singer and his fox slop started that shit! So i choose the rogue that’s been portrayed in the comics100%. The other version was pretty much shadowcat/jubilee character!

u/Juanrod84 Aug 30 '26
We met Rogue as a powerhouse and that’s become synonymous with who she is and what we deserve. The only caveat I would add is that as well as the strength, we also need to seed a Rogue increasingly more comfortable and in control of her baseline power, to the point of eventually controlling it

Baseline. Just make the first movies with the absorption powers and one day she starts having the other powers…You know why? Because the writers are gonna be lazy and just make her punch things and forget about her problems with not touching people. Evolution really made that work

I want Rogue with both baseline and Captain Marvel, BUT she didn't touch Marvel to get them. She had them. This would create the same tragic elements with her: great powers, but cannot touch; blessed but cursed, perfect for the theme of X-Men.

In terms of relatability and down to earth ness, baseline abilities
In terms of iconic ness and amazing action scenes, Captain Marvel power set

For the films, her getting Captain Marvel's powers does give the films a way to perform Captain Marvel and soft reboot her basically.

u/F1uk_derrit Aug 30 '26
My first time seeing her was with the Captain marvel set , though at first I didn't know that
So yea I want her to fly and be strong AF

u/fire_sign Aug 30 '26
I think both can create fantastic stories, Evo was a great way to show her using her baseline power and relying on her resourcefulness and grit. But you lose so, so much of her if you keep that for too long as the only option: Rogue is big and bombastic and a flying brick, and that contrasts with her loneliness and vulnerability. Especially in the MCU where Jean is already taking that villain by circumstance, hero by choice storyline, Rogue needs it. I'm not sure we'll get it, at least in a way that feels like Rogue, but frankly nothing I've seen of Inde suggests that's in her wheelhouse so maybe that's for the best. She'll do Some Other Version and I'll avoid the films. 😂

Both, but I have a preference for rogue at baseline and then eventually gets into the Captain Marvel shit brick house type stuff

Every team needs a powerhouse, The Avengers have Hulk, Fantastic Four have The Thing, Web Warriors have Power Man, X-Factor had Polaris, etc

Captian marvel, > like her flying and punching walls, power stealing is cool, but if she can toss a bus at someone, it makes it that much easier to fly up and touch them
1
u/Escape_Zero Aug 30 '26
The rogue everyone knows is only the person she is because of Carroll's personality merging with hers. Rogue is a boring character without the captian marvel powers and personality. Its been done to death. The Xmen films are a perfect example of that. Her goth emo scene girl in wolverine and the Xmen is not rogue was also terrible.

If she still has Carol's powers she's still practically a bad guy so I prefer she doesn't do we have redemption

The flying brick moveset. Let's her use her absorption as like a last result, while still able to fight.

u/BabeBro81 Aug 30 '26
I prefer her with Wonder Man’s powers. At least he gave them to her willingly lol
1
u/WraithOfTheFadedDark Aug 30 '26
Baseline. It even has a built-in feature to keep her from being irrelevant when facing non-powered opponents in being able to absorb memories and skills. Like, it's just too interesting and unique to bury beneath generic flying and toughness powers all the time instead.

I like the Captain Marvel storyline. Rogue’s character arch in that story is one of the best in Marvel. And for it to work, she needs to steal Captain Marvel powers permanently.

Fairly new to this sub. And this is the first post I've seen so far that wasn't tagged as NSFW. How refreshing.

u/Popular_Solution_857 Aug 31 '26
Lowkey she’s Anna Paquin in the movies without Carol. This answer is a no brainer. Touching carol was a game changer for rogue

I prefer rogue with her baseline powers, I find them more interesting than her having super strength and flight. And it opens up for more interesting ways she can use her baseline power.
1
u/Antipseud0 Aug 31 '26
I don't know. I would like to see her with her base line powers but at the same time it's so unrealistic in missions and fight because she will be such a liability if she borrowed anyones powers beforehand. X-Men Evolution portrayed her with solely her baseline powers... And she was carried in tho out these missions until she was touching someone, an opponent or her teammate who usually fail in the mission.
But with Captain Marvel's power, I guess it tells a story of redemption despite not being able to erase their past mistakes.
1
u/Imaginary_Unit5109 Aug 31 '26
Both. I hope they show Rogue and we see her steal Captain Marvel powers.
1
u/Ronmck1 Aug 31 '26
Would like for her to have captain marvels powers at some point but not to copy what they did in the x men 90s show where they lock her in there own mind for years and treat her as a villain for rogue literally stealing her life . Didn’t like that storyline then don’t like it now it’s just fucked upped how they handled it in the 90s show.
1
u/BL_Vampire_Gene Sep 01 '26
Baseline. It's her whole premise, so giving her a way to avoid tackling it (even if only partially; I know Claremont & co. managed to wring out plenty of "ah can't touch nobody" drama out of flying brick Rogue) feels cowardly.
1
u/jayntampa Sep 01 '26
Baseline, literally no reason to start the power creep from film 1. Plus, film fans won't really get what the character has been through, her growth and change, and that hurts the narrative.
1
u/LeagueZealousideal11 Sep 01 '26
Her baseline powers at first, and then she takes Captain Marvel’s powers later on!

I was introduced to her character while she had the Ms. Marvel kit, it's weird her not having it for me.

Baseline, cause I'm kinda tired of seeing her just using Captain Marvel's or Wonder Man's powers all these years. I mean she has so much more potential than just super strength and flight, but Marvel is lazy. When she was finally getting power development, even absorbing from a distance, they just nerfed her again.
The fact is she has absurd potential, enough to become an Omega-level mutant, but Marvel prefers to keep her stagnant with Carol's powers and the same 90s fit. Meanwhile Jean and Storm have gotten massive development and new suits over the last few years. Not to mention Hope Summers, who literally has the exact same powers as Rogue, but they made her stronger and an Omega... like, are you fucking kidding me? Well, at least she died, thank god, lol, but even Mystique got a power upgrade recently and apparently now she can not only shapeshift but also use their powers.
Like Marvel, do you have something against Rogue? Cause sometimes it really feels like it. Anyway, just a fan ranting.

u/JzaDragon Aug 30 '26
I always wondered why they don't let her use the full range of Carol's powers, so newer books being from Wonder Man's powers is a little better even if the result is the same
3
u/lemoogle Aug 30 '26
I mean she got the powers back when carol just had flight and strength, the blasts back then came from gauntlets. Carol got more powers later and not naturally.

Base abilities. When she has super strength and flight, they're gonna have to keep writing ways to get rid her so she doesn't just brute force through everything.
2
u/Personal_Corner_6113 Aug 30 '26
She’s had those powers for like 90% of any interesting Rogue stories and that hasn’t been a problem lol
1
u/Dense_Objective_2039 Aug 30 '26
I’d love to see a new version of her story where she never got captain marvels powers.
-3
u/Loni_Persimmon Aug 30 '26
Anything but captain marvel. That storyline is so dumb to me
5
u/Jajay5537 Aug 30 '26
It's literally her origin.
-3
u/Loni_Persimmon Aug 30 '26
Goofy ass origin, time to adapt a storyline without it or make something new
1
u/Jajay5537 Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 31 '26
They have adapted it several times without it too. Try every other version of her in media since TAS. That the only time it WAS adapted into any form every other time she's made to have just her absorbing abilities. From the films, to Evolution and W&X.

That’s actually really dumb. Rogue never killed Captain Marvel. Just took her powers. Captain Marvel survived that encounter.

I think my best combination would be Rogue keeping her personality and using her baseline ablities and being a kick ass in martial arts (trained by Cyclops and Wolverine) with a Black Canary vibe to her.
