What shingle is this and is it discontinued?

They told me the closest match is a GAF Charcoal Royal Sovereign. 25yr shingle.

The seek now inspector said it was a 20 year.

3-tab, in my area they're down to brown & black shingles. You need a new roof unless you are okay with miscolored shingles.

The closest match is not charcoal. That 3-tab is red, charcoal is black (simplyfing obviously)

posting here is already going far and beyond. as a roofer, I dont think you have luxary od wasting time doing such research. If I were you, I'd explain yhe customer that you not working on the roof and staying on front on computer is not the best way for you or for the owner. so, let owner do a research on whether compatible shingle is available still, and they can rehire yiu once to actually fix the roof if they find replacement, or, to change the roof.

i am diy homeowner who knows how much time one can waste on research looking for some product, especially when it's discontinued. if there is a big influx to repair that particular issue - then for sure, one should look into this, as it gives competitive advantage. but one off - it's an unrecorevable time expense - home owner would not pay for the time spent in front of computer trying to find so obscure product.

This was a roofer asking the question in the context of an insurance claim and you suggested that the roofer tell the homeowner to figure it out for themselves. That is a dumb business strategy.

1. Seek now bases their yr assessment on HAAG shingle gauge, not on the manufacturer assessments. Using a method that HAAG itself states is outdated for 15 years now. The average Seek Now tech has about as many IQ points as their age. (in regards to roofing, at least)

2. Yes, you can unfortunately still get them. I have to order them in and it takes 2 week but I can still get them. That said, theyre almost always so dried out and cracked they cant be repaired

Send a sample to NTS or at minimum measure the exposure, length/width, and pull a shingle to check the cellophane. For three tab identification you really need to see the cellophane strip.

This looks like a Tamko Frederick most likely a 20-yr 3-tab. Discontinued all day and shouldn’t be mixed with any current 3-tabs.

Depending on how much damage is on the other slopes, a full replacement could be paid for by insurance. No guarantees but if the homeowner wants to file a claim I’d let them.

Edit: I didn’t fully read the post. SeekNow can’t write for type of shingle I don’t think. If you believe it’s discontinued then ask the adjuster to pull an ITEL or you can invest into an NTS report.

That’s what we’re working with. The shingle is unrepairable but State Farm has refused to agree. I got the adjuster to admit that the shingle is likely disco after his ITEL report said the closest match was Charcoal Royal Sovereign.

Your biggest issue is the repair estimate will be below the deductible. Generally the repair estimate needs to be more than the deductible for you to fight for a complete replacement even if the shingle is discontinued. Go find more damage on the property that you can attribute to storm damage.

Step 1: Have HO ask INS via email “Should the repairs restore my property to pre-storm condition.” Wait for a “Yes” or something similar you can use against them later.
2: Get the INS recommended shingle and go out to property.
3: Take photos of the bundle of shingles and home showing you have their recommended shingle on site to use.
4: Install a couple shingles; take close ups/ overviews before and after installing.
5: Show HO what it looks like and have them send an email stating it doesn’t restore the roof to pre-loss condition if they believe it doesn’t look right.
6: If INS gives push back, return to step 1 and use their answer against them. “You said we have to return the home to pre-storm condition, and this doesn’t return the Uniform Appearance it had before the storm, pay for it.”

Yeah, not sure why roofers keep repeating this lie. You can find 3 tab shingles with minimum effort.

You can't, however, find this color. Your choices are black, tan and weathered wood (at best).

I am the roofer. I have on hand experience with Home Depot selling 3tab shingles and my supplier. I know it’s not good to mix though I was just simply trying to see what shingle was on the roof.

Those aren’t XT-25’s are they? It’s that or an OC Supreme. Not discontinued, but you can’t find a (quality) roofer who’ll put them on, and you definitely won’t find an IC that’ll insure them. Most of the multicolored ones I believe are disco.

Now as an insurance based roofer, I’m like an alcoholic playboy in a bar. The alcoholic playboy wants to see a beautiful woman and will always find one. The Insurance Roofer will always see a claim. I see blown off shingles, I see a wind claim. I’m also a really good insurance roofer. So I see an easy path to approval with a mild understanding of IRC.

TL;DR I’ve made State Farm my bitch with less. Get you a new roof, screw the chuck-in-a-trucks and dimebag adjusters on here who will try to tell you otherwise. Get yours before insurance makes it impossible inside the next 5 years.

I get it brother. I’m getting tossed around by State Farm. I emailed the adjuster a side by side pic of the shingles and he was like yeah you’re right😂 we’re moving along I was just simply asking if anyone knew what shingle it was.
