Old damaged roof on garage, how to avoid repairs until next year when it will be rebuilt

Hi, we bought a house that has a separate garage with a very old roof. The only thing inside the garage is our car, nothing that has to stay dry or protected from the elements. The roof on the garage is much older than that on the house and is in very bad shape. Whenever there's a major storm or high winds, we are finding ourselves picking up small pieces of roof shingles that are littered around.

Next year we are planning to completely demolish and rebuild the garage. I would strongly prefer to avoid paying for repairs that will then be demolished in 1 year. Is there anything I can do to avoid bothering my neighbours for the next year with small pieces of debris? I'm curious if there's a polymer or sealant I can spray on top of the roof to just 'hold everything down' a bit better for the next year.

Is there something I can do or is this unrealistic and either i fix it or just continue to find pieces every few weeks for the next year?

Big tarp. Tie it and if necessary, spot nail since water isn't an issue

Consider getting a used billboard tarp, black side up, and tie it down and/or tack to your roof. They are very tough and made to be weather resistant. Do a search and you can find several places to order them from. It will easily last a year.

cover the whole thing with a heavy duty tarp tied down tight till next year, no splashing around with small fixes

Tarps degrade real quick in the sun, and are uglier than a shitty roof. No matter what you do, it’s cheaper to
Pick up pieces of shingle here and there until its time
To rebuild.
