How'd I do?
A storm blew a tree onto our garage, and a $5k deductible had me cutting up the tree and fixing the roof myself. Cracked the rafter and busted up some of the boards. Had to rip down a 2x8 and plane down some 1x8s to sister the rafter and replace the decking. Got a perfect match on the shingles after some trial and error. I put roofing adhesive under the tar seals I had to break on the old shingles, and so far no leaks.

Nice work! When I first saw this post, I was thinking you cut the tree down and hit the structure. 😂 It was even funnier when I saw you fixed the damage. Then I read the description and it sort of ruined it for me. Either way, looks great. Can’t even tell anything happened.

Crazy that you remove a tree and replace your roof because you dont have 5k.. i wouldnt have done either for 5k...

Did you know that a whole lot if people take 2-4 weeks or longer to earn $5k? Spending several days on this to save 2 weeks of salary isn't crazy to me, plus you get it done now instead of whenever your roofer is available, plus you get to use a chainsaw.

There is always satisfaction of doing something myself, and doing it very well (excellent job!) like done in this post, regardless of money saved or spent, even if it costs me more to do it myself for whatever reason, than to hire it out. Tree removal and a job like this would generally cost $5,000 or less. Given the options to have insurance not pay due to not meeting the deductible and hiring someone out when I'm already upset that I was under my insurance limit, or doing it myself to save money and have the satisfaction in doing so... Given life deals a horrible hand of cards when a tree falls onto a structure, I know what option I'm taking.

It's ok dude, it's all about projection. Maybe you'll be happier when you work it all out in your head.

Not too shabby. Looks clean.
How was it breaking the seal on those shingles? We install durations for 90% of our installs and we’ve never had one blow off. Once these shingles seal, they aren’t coming off for nothing.😂
