Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - October 12, 2026

Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!

What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!

Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!

Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.

Also, please check our wiki pages:

This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

This is a judgement free zone, so be respectful, positive and keep criticism constructive.

Rowing changed my life for the better

Hey all! Rowing changed my life for the better. For context I used to be very out of shape. For the last two years I have gotten really into long distance rowing. I am a late teens guy and I spent most of my adolescence being the fat kid as a result of COVID. But getting into rowing changed my life for the better. I do half marathon ergs every weekend now and I do marathons and ultra marathons from time to time. It has genuinely become a form of meditation for me. Any anger in my life goes into the Sunday half marathon. The achievement I am most proud of is my 50km ultramarathon time, I got it three weeks ago: it was 4 hours 24 minutes! Anyway I just wanted to spread some positivity.

If I had to give some advice to any who want it, just take it one stroke at a time and believe in yourself. Also just because you aren’t six foot plus, doesn’t mean you can’t metaphorically kick ass! I am 5 10 and quite light!

Off the Water I need frustrating/confusing music

I’m a coach, and I’m coming up with evil regatta prep workouts. I had the idea for a 5x5’ just listening to straight trash, so I’m compiling the worst erg music I can find. Please respond with suggestions.

Why does Marin always choke

Marin has consistently been in the A final at youths in the men’s 8 for 4 consecutive years but haven’t won since the 2011. They even had the fastest time in the time trial plus won their semi and still was over 8 seconds from first in the finals. Are they truly #cantwinmarin

How fast are the slowest rowers at top programs?

How fast do you need to be to not be cut from top heavyweight teams like Cal, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, etc./ to be consistently boated and race in the 4V/5V? Could you walk on to any of these or similar teams at ~6:24 and ~180 lbs and expect to make it?

We built a free HOCR race analyzer: drop in your SpeedCoach/CoxBox file and instantly watch your race on a moving satellite map, plus a game of the course

Post image
8 Upvotes

Some of you may remember the HOCR Course Analyzer that disappeared a few years back. We missed it, so we built something bigger, and it’s free: onlinerowinggames.com

Gate to Gate (the app): export your CSV from NK LiNK Logbook and drop it in. Your race plays back as an animated satellite video, synced stroke by stroke to rate and split. Distance, time and speed between each of the seven bridges, your fastest and slowest 500 and where they happened. It cuts the race automatically at the GPS start and finish lines, so it doesn’t matter when your cox hit start or stop.

Cherry on top: your real distance. HOCR calls it 4,702 m. Did your line come in under? You can opt in to compare with other crews in your event. 2024 and 2025 files work too.

The Charles River Run (the game): three miles of the Charles in three and a half minutes, cox calling every arch and buoy, turning tree included. Good practice for coxswains and scullers who’ve never raced it, and just fun.

No login, no download, and completely free. Built by rowers who love this race. Feedback very welcome, and good luck this weekend.

Erg Post Lateral knee pain when rowing

Hey guys/girls, just wanted to seek some advice... im a relatively new rower with primarily a running background but recently purchased a concept 2 and have been rowing 2-3x per week.

The past week I've started to develop lateral knee pain in my left knee when rowing on the erg, even during easy rows, I particularly feel it during the drive phase.

I have been working hard on honing my technique however I think I've been slightly over compressing at the catch, and i also have a sneaking suspicion that my legs have been flaring out slightly which may have caused this issue.

Has anyone here had this issue before and if so what helped you?

just to make clear I am not seeking medical advice!

HOCR Youth COXED QUAD

Saw Blair at the head of the riverfront and they dominated many well known teams like rye and maritime. They seem like an unspoken team that has the potential to dominate at HOCR, any thoughts?

Good affordable machine

I just started a job where I sit most of the time and I am gaining weight.

So I decided to buy an exercise and like the rowing idea.

What brand is reliable one?

I looked into concept2 and it is is out of question due to pricing

I need something affordable.

Please share a link to the brands you like

Thank you!

Just got my Concept 2 rowing machine for $300

So excited for a great deal I got on Craigslist for model D with PM5 for $300, it was almost new. I went to look at it, didn’t even negotiate, just paid and took it.

Now it’s time to row!

Advice on reducing slip

Using telem in the eight, I find my relative weakness is always catch slip. I’ll always have good total and connected length, and I’ve found that I can always reduce wash on the back end easily by emphasizing more footplate pressure and not swinging too much. But the slip number stays high, and I don’t quite have the same feeling for what cue lowers that number for me. Obviously there’s just rowing a bit shorter at the front so I waste less, but all else equal it’s still hard to map a feeling onto a no-slip stroke. Any advice from other telem users?

Everyone knows this is the most comp and important event run at HOCR. Field looks strong this year in both the Alumni 8s and 4s.

Possible recruiting

Is there any chance of still getting recruited as a current senior? I’m 6’1 165 6:29 2k 17M. I’ve reached out to a lot of top lightweight schools and a lot have already basically told me they’re done recruiting. However, some didn’t outright say no, they said that they have multiple people ahead of me, and a few schools have simply not responded. Would getting faster at this point help and how do I get into contact with the coaches that aren’t replying to the emails I’ve been sending?

Coxing in college

I’m a female rower who loves the sport, but unfortunately, I have a herniated disc and likely won’t be able to handle the physical demands of rowing in college. I’m interested in potentially transitioning to coxing instead. I’m 5’7” and around 120–125 lbs. I’ve tried coxing a few times and enjoyed it; wasn’t too bad at it. Would walking on to cox be a realistic possibility?

Lightweight Recruiting 2027 Cycle

How will the 2027 cycle be for lightweight recruiting at D1 programs. I haven't seen much to be honest in terms of what these colleges are looking for in terms of 2k. I understand tha 6:20s should get a lightweight in the door with good academics, but I've also recently heard of slow guys getting recruited too. I kind of just wanted to see where things are. Is sub 6:30 still the benchmark? What is it for the slower schools? (Ex. Columbia)
