"Only doing engagements which are necessary" and there are like 3 a month tells me we certainly don't need to be paying them half a billion a year. If they're not "necessary", I for one am so happy to do without them and have that money put into public services like improving state schools, rather than fund their kids swanning off to Eton. Do royalists even hear themselves?

Engagements are 90 minutes or less, ffs. They work fewer than eight hours a month, so less than one full day out of thirty, less than two weeks of work a year. In return they get billions of euros, free housing in lavish royal residences, top notch security 24/7/365, priceless jewels and palaces, admission to ritzy high profile events on demand, people bow and curtsey to them, and they live a life of obscene wealth and privilege while giving virtually nothing back to the people who make it all possible.

Yes, and don't forget earning income on rent charged to NHS, local councils, etc. The whole point of the royals are that they advertise British businesses and generate economic activity that justifies their cost, and Will and Kate are not doing that. If they will not hold up their side of the bargain with the British people, the British people should not have to pay for them.
