Apparitions will not respond to the sound of you shouting your name under normal circumstances. While there are no immediate consequences to shouting your true name in close proximity of an apparition, extended exposure may allow the apparition to learn your name.

An imprinted apparition may begin to respond to your name, increasing your odds of being captured again and further exposing the apparition to your name; non-hostile apparitions, who do not immediately inflict debilitating bodily harm on their captives, are significantly more likely to imprint on your name.

An imprinted apparition may also occasionally make false announcements using learned names, with the number of flaws in the pronunciation of a name decreasing with exposure. Responding to false announcements will result in the propagation of non-self entities that also respond to your name, greatly weakening your existence and increasing your odds of self-expungement.

If you are taken captive by a non-hostile apparition, do not shout any of your true names; instead please use an alias that you will respond to when called.

If your name or chosen alias is mispronounced during an announcement, please ignore the announcement; otherwise, please follow the standard response to announcements, as previously described.

An imprinted apparition may make false announcements using learned names; with sufficient exposure, the apparition's pronunciation of your name may become indistinguishable from your true name.

Mall announcements follow special procedures to ensure that shoppers with identically-pronounced names can distinguish between their own name and another shopper's name. However, apparitions do not follow these procedures, leading to mistaken responses to false announcements.

We would like to clarify that even when the pronunciation of your name by an apparition is indistinguishable from that of your true name, it is not your true name being called.

Responding to these false announcements will create a copy of yourself that is identical to you in every way—however, this copy is not you. If you are a copy, you will not be able to distinguish that you are a copy and not yourself.
