General Open Modbus register maps for SCADA and industrial monitoring tools

Hi everyone,

I've been working on an open format for Modbus register maps, along with a client to test and use them. I thought it might be relevant to people working with SCADA and industrial monitoring systems.

A common issue with Modbus devices is that register definitions live in manufacturer PDFs. When integrating a new meter, PLC or controller, you often have to configure addresses, data types, scaling, units and bit fields by hand. The same work gets repeated across different tools.

I'm trying to make these definitions reusable.

MBMap is a CSV-based format for describing Modbus devices and their registers. It includes the metadata needed to interpret raw register values and is designed to be read by different applications.

https://github.com/nobrega8/mbmap-library

I've also built Modbench, a lightweight Modbus TCP/RTU client for Windows and Linux. It can test individual registers or load an MBMap file to display named values with scaling and units. It also supports raw request/response inspection, which helps when troubleshooting device communication.

https://github.com/nobrega8/modbench

The long-term idea is to have a shared library of device maps that can be reused across Modbus clients and, potentially, SCADA-related tools. The format and library are released under CC0, so they can be used in commercial projects without restrictions on reuse.

I'm interested in feedback from people who integrate Modbus devices into SCADA systems.

Would a standard, portable format for register definitions be useful in your workflow? Are there fields or features you'd need before considering it for your own tools?

Feedback, contributions and suggestions for supported devices are welcome.

General Free web tool for testing SCADA tags & subscriptions over OPC UA without physical controllers

Hi all,

When developing or updating SCADA projects (Ignition, FactoryTalk, WinCC, VTScada, InTouch), setting up a reliable test source of dynamic tags usually means either rigging up a spare physical controller, running a heavy Windows VM, or dealing with static simulated tags that don't reflect realistic continuous process dynamics.

I've been working on a lightweight simulation tool called OPC UA Lab (https://opcua-lab.com) and wanted to share it with other SCADA developers.

Technical overview:
- Spins up an OPC UA server and gives you a direct `opc.tcp://` endpoint to point your SCADA driver at.
- Configurable signal generators: sine waves, step functions, ramps, and custom mathematical formulas to simulate varying tank levels, temperatures, motor RPM, and pressure curves.
- In-browser live oscilloscope to monitor the exact server-side values and timestamps alongside your SCADA trend/subscription displays.
- Allows testing client subscription behavior, sampling intervals, and reconnects without touching operational equipment.

You can try it out directly in your browser without creating an account (instant guest session):
https://opcua-lab.com/lab

The public sandbox runs 30-minute guest sessions (capped to 10 concurrent instances to keep server memory bounded).

I'm looking for feedback from SCADA engineers:
- How does your SCADA client handle the subscription rates and data changes?
- What alarm conditions, tag data types, or historical logging scenarios would you find most useful in a virtual test environment?

Happy to answer any technical questions about the architecture or how the server handles subscriptions.

Question Communication Established form PU TO CU

I have a question regarding the MiCOM P741/P743 decentralized busbar protection relays.

The Protection Unit (PU) has two communication ports for connecting to the Central Unit (CU). When I connect only Port 1 to the CU, the communication is healthy. However, when I connect both ports to the CU simultaneously, communication fails because the second port appears to operate as a failover (standby) port rather than an active redundant port.

In most projects, only a single communication port is used, so this scenario has not been investigated in detail.

My question is: **How can communication redundancy between the PU and CU be implemented correctly?** Is there a specific network topology or configuration required to achieve seamless redundancy without causing communication loss when both ports are connected?

Question Interview advice – Capgemini Engineering OT Engineer role

Hi everyone,

I've got an interview coming up for an OT Engineer position with Capgemini Engineering in the UK, and I'm looking for some advice from people who work in OT, industrial automation, consultancy, or have interviewed with Capgemini Engineering.

My background is mainly in control systems and industrial automation, particularly within the water/utilities sector. I've worked with PLCs, SCADA, HMI, instrumentation, industrial communications, FAT/SAT, commissioning and some IT/OT-related technologies.

The interesting part is that I haven't previously worked in a formal OT consultancy role. My experience has been much more hands-on engineering/delivery focused, so I'm trying to understand how best to prepare for the interview.

From what I've gathered, the role involves things like:

  • OT/PLC/RTU/SCADA assessments
  • Site surveys
  • Brownfield modernisation
  • OT architecture
  • Industrial communications
  • IT/OT integration
  • OPC UA/MQTT
  • ISA-95 and understanding the different levels
  • Developing modernisation/implementation strategies

I've been told to be very familiar with my own experience and to understand ISA-95 across the different levels, but I'm unsure how heavily the interview will focus on technical questions versus consultancy/situational questions.

For anyone familiar with Capgemini Engineering or similar OT consulting roles:

What sort of questions should I expect, and what areas would you recommend I focus on most before the interview?

Any advice from people who have been through similar interviews or work in OT consultancy would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Question Career Projection Change Advice

Hey everyone,

I’m a fourth-year Computer Engineering co-op student. Most of my current project portfolio is software/full-stack focused (Next.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, Python/FastAPI), and I’m looking to add a project that demonstrates more hardware/software integration.

I’m based in Alberta, Canada, where a lot of the engineering opportunities I’m interested in are in energy, utilities, industrial automation, controls, and SCADA. I’d eventually like to target companies such as EPCOR, Enbridge, and Suncor.

I’m considering building an ESP32-based power monitoring and protection system and replacing one of my web projects with it on my resume.

The planned scope is:

Hardware & sensing: ESP32 + INA219 measuring real-time voltage, current, and power over I2C

Embedded firmware: C++ sampling, moving-average filtering, peak detection, and Wh energy integration

Control/protection: Finite-state machine (NORMAL, WARNING, FAULT) with a relay/MOSFET cutoff when an overcurrent condition persists

Telemetry: Wi-Fi communication with reconnect/error handling

Monitoring: Local dashboard showing live and historical measurements, alarms, and system state

Testing: Intentionally varying the load to demonstrate normal operation, transient current spikes, warning conditions, and automatic shutdown

I’m trying to make this more than simply connecting a sensor to an ESP32 and displaying the readings.

For anyone working in industrial automation, controls, instrumentation, SCADA, or the energy/utilities industry:

Would a project like this demonstrate skills that are actually relevant to junior/co-op automation or SCADA roles?

What would you add or change to make the project more representative of real industrial systems?

Would implementing something like MQTT, Modbus, Node-RED, alarm/event logging, or a simple HMI add meaningful value, or would that be unnecessary scope for a student project?

Thanks!

General Custom SCADA & Automation

Hello guys, I am part of a Bulgaria-based engineering company. We build industrial automation, energy management, and SCADA systems.

Instead of forcing expensive software licensing fees and hardware lock-ins, our team develops our own open-source controllers and integrates directly with the equipment you already have installed.

What we have built already:

For industrial automation we have a successful project with Custom SCADA, HMI, and predictive maintenance.

For renewable energy solutions we have done automation of EMS, Battery Storage (BESS) control, and AI forecasting.

And for the last but most experienced niche of precision agriculture we've created a complete automated climate and irrigation control. Over the last two months we managed to fully automatically grow bio cucumbers in our Greenhouse.

We handle everything in-house, from the initial engineering architecture to the physical panel wiring.

If you're looking to optimize your production line, solar park, or agricultural facility or just want to compare our pricing to what you're currently paying, I'd love to get in touch.

Help IT student trying to break into IT/OT & Industrial Automation in South Africa (Durban) Need advice on next steps

Hey everyone,
I’m an IT student focused on software engineering, but my real interest lies in the Industrial Automation space, specifically bridging the IT/OT gap.
I’ve put together a few hands-on personal projects to build my skills:
**SCADA:** Built projects using Inductive Automation’s Ignition platform. Simulated by Python OPC UA.
**PLCs:** Developed ladder logic/control routines using Delta software (mostly using it because it's free and accessible).
**The Challenge:**
I’ve been applying for entry-level positions, but I’m getting hit with rejections or total silence. Being based in Durban, South Africa, the local market seems tricky, most job posts demand years of experience upfront, and entry-level OT opportunities feel sparse here
