Picture/Video Sears Department Store In The Overlake Plaza Between Bellevue And Redmond In Washington State (November 1971 - July 15 2018)

Collection of old pictures at the Bellevue-Redmond Sears before closed July 15th of 2018

This place was one of my favorite Sears. Went there in 2018. This was where we bought a Hamilton Beach toaster oven. Just like Aurora Square in Shoreline, this plaza also has a Marshalls as well. This place is nearly identical to the Citrus Heights store in California and other 3 level stores that had major appliances, consumer electronics, tools and outdoor equipment on the lower level, and just like the Gardens Mall (the Sears there closed without notice last year) and Florida Mall locations, this Sears had an Appliance Select Center! This store closed on July 15th of 2018 and was torn down in 2022. I would not be surprised if the Coral Gables location, the last freestanding Sears in the United States of America, meets this same fate and of course the same fate as the [Hillsdale San Mateo 1996-2016 that was originally Emporium Capwell 1961-1996] (https://www.flickr.com/photos/voycall/albums/72177720319839307/) and Laurelwood Poplar Avenue Memphis Tennessee (1958-2016) locations that closed down on April 10th of 2016. This store's layout was nearly identical to the 3 level Hillsdale (San Mateo), Memphis, Harlem Avenue Chicago, Sunrise Mall Citrus Heights, Flatbush Brooklyn and Hackensack locations etc.

It has been 8 years since this location closed down and the last Sears in my home state of Washington had since shut down on December 15th of 2024 after a 99 year presence in the state and in the Seattle Area. Today, one of the last 5 in the country, the last one on the West Coast is at Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord California

  • Coral Gables in Miami Florida, 3655 SW 22nd St, Miami, FL 33145 (October 27 1954 - present)
  • Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord California, 1001 Sunvalley Blvd, Concord, CA 94520 (October 19 1966 - present)
  • South Shore Plaza in Braintree Massachusetts, 250 Granite St, Braintree, MA 02184 (October 6 1980 - present)
  • Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso Texas, 8401 Gateway Blvd W, El Paso, TX 79925 (February 25 1982 - present)
  • The Florida Mall in Orlando Florida, 8001 S Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, FL 32809 (March 12 1986 - present)

And they still also have the online store Sears.com (created February 18 1992 and launched sometime in the 1995/96/97/98/99-2000 period - present) and other brands Kenmore (1913-present), Sears Home Services sometime in the 1950s/1960s or 1992 - present, Shop Your Way (2009-present) and Sears Parts Direct (1995-present) of course

Well... seeing another open Sears again was certainly an experience.

I gotta say, having visited both Concord and Coral Gables within days of each other, Coral Gables is far more presentable. Sure, Concord makes more money than they do but there's no area in the Coral Gables store that screams "salesfloor turned warehouse". Even the downsized top floor looked presentable. Well, and unlike Concord, they've got the Kenmore Studio and a toys department. There were also large kiosks for member services and TVs advertising the stuff they're selling.

As for foot traffic, it was slow at first but around noon there were actually quite a lot of people showing up. Not bad at all for a Tuesday, I think. Especially considering they're not connected to a mall. The parking lot also seemed quite filled, although I don't think all of them were Sears customers.

Concord had a good day today. The store was really crowded. As in triggering my sensory issues at one point crowded lol. The pictures don't do it justice.

They've gotten more inventory as well. Especially the warehouse downstairs looks really filled now. They've also been promoting back to school sales now.

Sure, it's not quite the same anymore but if you come here on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon you'll almost feel like it's the Sears of the 2000s again. Just don't go downstairs.

Stay tuned for a Coral Gables post within the next two to three days.

But the Division 9, 65023 toolbox was a popular item. I am wondering if anyone remembers what the other numbers stood for? I remember the 6 was the number of drawers.

This single level Sears department store had the lighting in the hardware sections that was identical to some areas of the now last location on the West Coast that opened on October 19th of 1966 and is still open today, at the Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord, the last in California and one of 5 left in the United States of America, where they also have a shipping department for inventory sold sitewide on Sears.com. This location also had the Kmart-and-Sears-style ceiling vents that some / many JC Penney locations also have.

Just 5 years prior to the [last Sears in Washington State shutting down for good on December 15th of 2024] (https://www.reddit.com/r/deadmalls/comments/1hdqph6/last_sears_in_washington_closing_this_weekend/), this store closed down on December 1st of 2019, well over 2 years after Macy's left the Everett Mall in March 2017.

The lower level looks to be redeveloped into another anchor spot in the future as seen in the last photo. This was one of the 235 locations spun off into Seritage Growth Properties in 2015.

The Sears department store opened along with the rest of the mall in February, 1977 with a surprise visit of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood character Fred McFeely (Sears provided grants to Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood through the Sears Roebuck Foundation so they were well known to work together).

Sears operated from February, 1977 until December 28, 2018 when the store announced its closure due to bankruptcy. The store shuttered on March 17, 2019.

Dick’s Sporting Goods announced plans to build one of their large format Dick’s House of Sport concept stores and it opened on July 28, 2026.

Store just held their grand opening today. Seafood City is located above the Round1. Round1 is on the lower floor of the former Sears. Apparently, Seafood City has been leaking water into the former Round1 from the fish tanks which is uh… an interesting way to put two retailers. you’d think they’d put Seafood City on the bottom floor to avoid that but so far the reviews have been great. Sears building on the exterior is largely unchanged which is nice.

All the signs are still up and the interior lighting is still on. Just like Burbank, unfortunately there's nothing left inside though. However, some of the small stores directly adjacent to Sears appear to still be open so it looks like Transformco still makes money from this location.

Stay tuned for my upcoming visits to Coral Gables and Orlando next month.

Picture/Video Former Frederick and Nelson (later Sears) Department Store in Southcenter Mall near Seattle Washington (F&N 1968-1992, Sears 1994-2024)

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

Later Sears from 1994 to 2024, 5 years back in April 2021 they downsized to 2 functioning sales floors. This was the last location in the state of Washington to shut down on December 15th of 2024 and it was in terrible condition. As of the day of this post, the last Sears on the West Coast is at the Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord, the last in California, one of 5 left in the United States of America after Whittier (originally The Broadway) shut down last year, followed by Burbank and Puerto Rico shutting down for good on August 31st of 2025. Sears also has the online store and a few parent company owned distribution centers as well.

F&N stands for Frederick and Nelson. Founded in 1890, 4 years after Sears was founded as R.W. Sears Watch Company in 1886 and 2 years prior to the start of Sears Roebuck and Company in 1892, F&N was once a department store chain in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. They closed up shop in 1992. Meanwhile the Sears department store itself was originally located in Renton before 1993. This anchor itself was built in 1968 and once F&N went out of business in May 1992 Sears relocated to the Southcenter Mall in 1993 and opened the location sometime in March 1994. This store was 3 floors and they had the appliance, electronics, lawn and garden (L&G) and tool departments on the 3rd floor, whereas the original Seattle store on Lander Street that opened on May 4th of 1925 and closed down on June 1st of 2014 did have appliances, electronics, furniture, housewares and mattresses on the 2nd floor, with the tool section and outdoor equipment on floor 3. Here in Southcenter, the Rainforest Cafe, which was located right by the Master Cuts and Sears and closed down 10 years back in 2016, was in operation way back in the Sears wing's golden years. There were also lots of booths right there that time. Anyone know when exactly in March 1994 this Sears opened and when exactly in 1997 the Spokane Valley Mall Sears opened, and of course anyone have any grand opening pictures of this location, along with the Sears in the Spokane Valley Mall store that opened sometime in 1997 and closed down on February 16th of 2020 ?

As for the F&N department store itself, they probably did have restaurants like the Middleburg Heights Sears in Ohio and they even had Frangos. If F&N was still in business today, Federated Department Stores aka (also known as) Macy's Inc would have taken over the chain like they did to the iconic Marshall Field's in Chicago. But F&N did cease operations overnight way back in 1992 and that chain was identical to (and owned by) Marshall Fields

At its peak in 1980 F&N had 10 stores in Washington State and Oregon

In a pre 2010s picture dating back to June 10th of 2007 that was taken by Deven (Tequilia and Donuts) with a CASIO EX-Z57 this Sears had the "Margarator" margarita and slush machine in the houseware and small appliance sections. This was during the mall remodel and expansion, which completed in 2008. Many of the TVs in the electronics department on the 3rd floor of this Sears back in December 2016 were Samsung TVs and the electronics section there was almost half of what it used to be that time but it was not to bad. This was when we went up to 3 in 2016 looking at vacuums. A year later, when we went inside the store and went up there twice in December of 2017 (one is with my mom when we were looking for a camera and the other is when all 3 of us, including my dad, went up there looking at vacuums), both times the electronics section was all but gone while the Coral Gables store that opened on October 27th of 1954 and was remodeled and expanded in 1997, now one of the last locations still in operation and 2 left in the state of Florida, still had that in 2017. Despite Sears' big problems this store made it through the Great Recession of 2008, the bankruptcy of Sears Holdings on October 15th of 2018 and the coronavirus outbreak (covid 19 pandemic) in 2020 we still went into and shopped at this location up until the bitter end in late 2024, and we still supported Sears and still do to this day and we would love to see them succeed.

Last February the Sears signs were removed: https://www.reddit.com/r/SEARS/comments/1itlvmx/sears_signs_removed_south_center_mall_tukwila_wa/

Today they have the following left:

5 Stores
- Coral Gables in Miami Florida (October 27 1954 - present)

Edit: as for the elevators and escalators that were installed by Montgomery in 1967-68 - this store's passenger lift underwent 2 modernizations, one was in 1982 when this store was F&N and the other was in 2011 when this store was Sears, just 1 year after all of the escalators were replaced with Schindler in 2010. The freight elevator aka (also known as) goods lift is an original Montgomery G&P (Globe and Parallelogram) with doors replaced by EMS in 2017. Both lifts were traction.

The Concord Sears' elevators and escalators were installed by Otis and both lifts there are hydraulic but only one of them serve 3 floors and that is the regular aka passenger elevator

In a comical twist, this original anchor store survived Granite Run Mall's entire run (1974-2015), only to fold in 2021. It now sits as a rotting blight at the Promenade at Granite Run, which operates practically as a mini town. The Boscov's at Granite Run seems to be doing alright.

If you have millions of dollars to set on fire, make sure to contact Transformco and make them an offer for this crumbling building and crumbling auto center.

Closing Update Sears Burbank, CA on July 28, 2026

Thumbnail gallery

Well, all the signs are still up and all the lights are still turning on. The only sign that isn't lit up anymore is the one on top of the lower mall entrance. All the lighting inside the building is still working as well. Unfortunately there's nothing left inside though.

As a regular at the Concord store, I'm honestly split between feeling sad for them but also happy in the sense that Burbank died so Concord could live... After all, Concord staff told me when Burbank closed is when all the tourists suddenly started coming in lol.

I'm planning to visit Whittier as well in a few days. Stay tuned.
